Who opposes? Who agrees?

Found this interesting statistic online and decided to see what others thought.

Why aren’t assault weapons that important? Mostly because they’re used so rarely — as few as 2 percent of all gun crimes, according to the official study mandated by Congress when it passed the 1994 version of the ban. So any legislation on assault weapons can only ever hope to impact a tiny fraction of all gun deaths.

This is a rare case where the NRA is right. It says the ban created an artificial distinction between “assault weapons” and other semi-automatic weapons, based almost entirely on cosmetic features. This is largely true.“The gun ban provision targets a relatively small number of weapons based on outward features or accessories that have little to do with the weapons’ operation,” University of Pennsylvania criminologist Chris Koper and his colleagues wrote in their official review of the 1994 assault weapons ban.“In other respects (e.g., type of firing mechanism, ammunition fired, and the ability to accept a detachable magazine), AWs do not differ from other legal semiautomatic weapons.”

1. They are no different than standard issue guns outside of looks and detachable mags. 2. They shoot exactly the same ammo as your grandfathers rifle. 3. They are the same as the guns used to keep us free. 4. They are also the same guns used to protect that idiot we have for a president. 5. Our Government lies about nearly every shooting saying they were used when actually they were not. 6. It's not about hunting. It's about our right to shoot/collect/own any rifle available to our Government. 7. I really like mine and since politicians protect their children with several, my children will be protected by at least one. Thanks for posting the truth about rifles.

It surprises me there is not more dicussion on the subject of freedom. What gives a cop or a soldier any more right to access these weapons than an independant citizen who has never been convicted of a fellony? I can sign up right now to join the police or military if I so choose. What makes them any more then a good guy then myself? Cops have murdered people as have military members even murdered each other

This is about freedom and the fact that the police and government work for us not the other way around. We the people are the masters. If you give up your ability to fight back against oppression and injustice then you have now become the slave.

People are too content enjoying their sheltered lives and allow fears bases on false statements and misguided facts to influence them into selling away their freedoms and becoming slaves.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Its about checks and balances. The ability of law abiding citizens to have personal arms comparable to what the police and military have access to creates balance.

In the case of the Batman movie theater shooting thelaw prohibited law abiding citizens to carry a firearm into the venue. This law didn't stop the shooter from bringing his guns in. If several patrons including the military member in that theater had been in posession of sidearms the shooter may have killed 2 or 3 people before being stopped instead of killing 14 or so and stopping when he decided too.

It is wrongful and dangerous to allow fear and misinformance to cause people to give up their freedoms to a kneejerk reaction. The face remains it is extremely, extremely unlikely that yourself or any of your loved ones will be killed by one of these "scarey black guns".

If anyone really wants to make an informed discission, educate youself. Take a firearms safety class and then go to the gun range and rent a few of the scarey guns to test out. Once you have banished the stigma and enigma of guns you will be in a better position to form an option considerably less biased by fear.

Remember its supposed to be the home of the brave not the fearful. People need to accept the fact they will never be totally safe and giving up your rights and liberties chasing some false sense of security is a futile and foolish venture.
