So what does everyone think about the people skating downtown? Does Hopkinsville need a skatepark?

They had one that basically rotted to the ground because no one used it. No problem with having one, but they shouldn't be skating on private property without permission.

I feel like if we can build a huge, unnecessary, money gouging water park for no good reason then we can build kids a far less expensive skatepark so they don't have to skate in the damn road.

Wonder why kids here get into trouble maybe because there's nothing else to do? No skate park, no city pools, why not??????

What you have to understand is a skatepark isn't simply for SKATEBOARDING. Bikers (which Hopkinsville has an abundance of), rollerbladers, and young kids interested in alternative "extreme" sports would all have a place to go have constructive fun. Also with the building of such a park, the amount of people participating in the hobbies I mentioned above would greatly increase. Another point is that not only people from Hopkinsville would utilize the facility. People from Crofton, Cadiz, Elkton, Clarksville, and almost every area within 30 minutes would gladly come to a park that's nicer than what they have. Not to mention the closest (decent) skateparks are no shorter than an hour and a half away. Finally, think of the hometown businesses that would eventually come to fruition because of the need for supplies. If I'm not mistaken, Bikes n Moore has been around successfully for more than a decade. I'm all for new business with the primary market being young kids spending their time on a hobby instead of getting affiliated with drugs/crime. Needless to say, skateboarding builds self-confidence and character in people, and that's something quite a few people in Hopkinsville could use.:)

I wonder why skateboards have been around in a popular form since at least the 60's and is a common method of transportation. Yet many people still assume that only punks and criminals ride on them. Most of those same complainers couldn't even manage the basic balance used to ride on one. Bike riders almost militantly demand rights and space to move around on public roads and they get it. But skating, which demands much more skill, balance, and athletic prowess to control gets none. Leave these kids alone. So long as they are not doing damage or breaking any laws they are just kids having fun and going places.
By that same token skaters, treat the roads, sidewalks, other drivers, and pedestrians with respect. Obey the law and don't give them an excuse to make you a stereotype.
