It's a conspiracy by the Hopkinsville chamber to cause arthritis in index fingers by having to dial 3 more numbers.

We have no control over it. All of western KY did have 502 but the powers that be took it away & gave us 270. Now we will have another one. What did you expect us to do? Picket & raise a fuss that we wanted another area code? I feel there are way more important things needed than to be focused on something we have no control over. I guess there ARE morons eveywhere.

You proved by your name that yes morons are everywhere. We all understand the reason for the new area code but having different ones on the same street like they are doing this time makes no sense what so ever, draw a line like last time and be done with it.

Our area will be given an additional area code. I believe it's 40 something. I don't think the 270 code is being retired. We just get another code & the reason is simple. The 502 area code covered western KY all the way up into Louisville. We began running out of available phone numbers so they took 502 away (it's still being used east of our area) & gave us 270. Think back to the days of the 502 area code. Very few ppl had cell phones (& if they did it was the old ones in the big bags) but every household had a landline plus all business & many businesses had multiple lines. Take a family of 4 in the 502 era. That family had 1 phone number unless they had an extra for business or a kids line. Now that same family has 4 numbers minimum because they all have cell phones! In my family of 3 we have 4 numbers. We all have cells & I keep a landline for handiling personal business because my hubby drives a truck & needs the minutes for business purposes. When you look at it this way it's no wonder we are running short on numbers & it will only get worse with mmore & more children having cells at an earlier age & more kids being born everyday. I'm not sure how they plan to keep up with it going forward.

Yeah, its stupid to let existing numbers keep the same area code and use the new one on new numbers. Half of the existing area code should be inconvenienced so everybody doesn't have to punch in an extra 3 digits when they add the guy across the street to the contact list in their phone. Yep, no sense whatsoever.
