Is it true that there are many times, especially in the evenings, when there are only 2 or 3 officers answering all police calls in Hopewell? I thought the papers said that they had hired 3 new officers during the summer through a Federal Grant program. There was another article last week that said that there were 3 more officers added from a Grant. So, how many officers do we ACTUALLY have? I very rarely see any in my neighborhood.

there are 3to4 per shift patroling ask the chief why there are more management personal during the day than officers and why he just hired a 80000 dollar investigator when we already had the position filled then ask why we need a 90,000+ asst. chief which is in process would we not be better off with more officers and equipment??????????

There used to me a minimum staffing requirement on the "evening" shift of 6-7 officers, plus a supervisor. Now we have 2-3? I thought City Council authorized another 10 officers this past spring. I was told that they have less than 50, which includes the admin staff. Not the 59 that the papers keep reporting. When did City Council authorize the new Investigator position? What are this persons responsibilities? Did they promote from within or go outside, again?

From the looks of the Hopewell Police Department they need to come see me and sign up for a lifetime membership instead of ating all those 7-11 donuts! I didn't realize they made those holster belts sooooooooo big! More than half of them look like humpty dumpty and couldn't run on foot to catch a cat if they had to more less a criminal!

I am told that the department is so short of officers because 18 officers have left the department since Chief Marting has been in the department. Most of the officers will tell you that it is directly related to Martin's leadership, management, and inability to interact with the officers. I am told that he generally has no idea of whats going on in the department and rarely interact with the detectives. It appears that the Inspector (a retired amjor from Richmond who was working as a deputy in Hanover) was brought in to be the "hatchet man" at the request of Tony Sylvester after Lt. Sumner (who was the Professional Standards Lieutenant) was one of the persons who signed the letter of support for Mr. Newman. One has to give credibility too that because within a week after the letter was submitted to the news paper Lt. Sumner was relieved of his duties and re-assigned to a less responsible position and the Inspector was hired and put into a position over the two captains to do internal investigations. looks suspicious to me. Basically what the department will have soon is a Chief, Deputy Chief and and Inspector (the three top positions) with no coorperate knowledge of the department or the city! You think it's bad now, just wait. The only saving grace is that Tony will not be there to pull the strings to make the puppits work. However, that means that the Chief and the other two will have to make decisions on their own, and thats scarey too. If only Chief Stanley had gotten the support of the four council members that fully support Chief Martin, the department would be a fine tuned machine and we wouldn't have to be fudging the crime statistics to make everything look better than it really is. Chief Stanley would simply tell it like it is and address the crime head on with a highly motivated group of police officers with full expectations of results from the staff. As for Jenny Craig, every department has its one percent, but for the most part you will find the majority of us in the gym several days a week. Join us if you like!

One would think that a High level position such as "Inspector", that was NOT previously funded, would have to be requested and then approved by City Council. Where is the funding for this position coming from?

I don't know where you get 1% because I was outside the courthouse the other day and probably out of 6 officers that walked by 5 of them needs to either join Jenny Craig or go get gastric bypass!!

Let's keep the thread going in the original mode; trying to find out why we have so few officers on the street. If you want to chastise a few for their extra pounds, then start a new subject.

Must have hit a neve somewhere!!! I call it like I see it and the reason why "trying to find out why we have so few officers on the street." is because the ones we had apparently aren't doing their jobs" I mean come on how many officers does it take to protect the donuts at 7-11?

If you actually READ my post, you would have seen that I wrote "If you want to chastise a few for their extra pounds, then start a new subject." The word FEW was referring to the number of people and the word "extra" was used to refer to the amount of weight. Start a new thread and post to your hearts content.

well ,for the record , they have a new hangout , Wawa . lol . but seriously , Hopewell is fairly safe and it really doesn't need 10 officers burning up gas . yes ,they need to issue more traffic violations to the regular citizens to pay more of their salary but other than that , the major crime in the city ; drug distribution , theft and the occasional anger management issues need counseling programs or something .

I find it funny that so many of the police officers have time to scheme against chiefs and campaign for politicians, in spite of being "short handed" as they put it. Maybe, if the cops Hopewell did have did their jobs, instead of hanging out trying to boost Chief's, maybe they could accomplish something, and more people would want to work for that Department. Don't see Chief Martin, Stanley, or even Marks as the problem. It is that old school "talent" (or lack thereof) that each of those Chief's have had to deal with. Without quality Officer's, hard to be a good Chief. Not saying Hopewell doesn't have some good Cops, but they have more then their fair share of Not good ones. I feel bad for the Chief's. I think each of them were good in their own ways, but with the people that they have working for them that are self-destructive, how do you succeed? You have to get rid of the cancer, and that kind of cleansing takes time.
