While I agree with not letting this guy run this type of tour, I want to pay closer attention to the last paragraph of this story. The state is proposing legislation to regulate commercial activity in state waters requiring a commercial permit. Okay, but just another nail in the coffin for small business trying to flourish in this anti-business backwards thinking state. "you can't do this", "you can't go there", "you have to have a permit", "no commercial activity allowed". This state is so bent on closing every damn thing down to access that no business stands a chance. Then you have a state that lets the Super Ferry go because of a bunch of nut environmentalists. You have DLNR regulating everything they can with fees and closures. And you have a Democratic legislature that says we have to tax our citizens to make up the loss due to the economy. Hello. Has anyone ever told the legislatures that business pays into the tax coffers? When you make it so hard for them to survive it will come back to haunt you. Backwards state, with backwards thinking anti-business thinkers.

huh: If anything, someone from California is an EXPERT on state meddling, fees, and taxes. The man surely is not happy with what is killing his state, and he's trying to stop the same thing from killing YOURS. As for the shark guy: he had already called it quits and should be considered gracious for showing up to his lynching.

I wonder if those Hawaii Kai people realize that they already have sharks infesting the marina. I live on the marina on Maka'a street. Having done some fishing in the backyard I can tell you that all I've ever caught in Kuapa Pond is Hammerhead sharks. Some pretty good size ones. I always cringe when I see people in the water skiing or whatever. If they only knew what they were sharing that water with I don't think they'd be comfortable at all out there.

Backwards state, with backwards thinking anti-business thinkers. Disagree. Right now we have commercial operators of all sorts that have hijacked our resources to their own commercial purposes. From commercial kite surfing operations taking all the beach space on the windward side to snorkeling tours monopolizing beach space along the North Shore. Their operations either take up the bulk of the beach space or pose a danger to other beach goers. Many of them don't collect or remit taxes to the state or even have a business license. It's about time the state stepped in.

Considering the enormous economic problems confronting CA residents, it would appear you ought to be venting your frustrations with the CA State legislators and not those of Hawaii.

Just because someone's IP is outside of Hawaii doesn't negate the content of their views. I moved to the mainland for business purposes but still have family and a home on Oahu. As a result, I stay in touch with what is going on. I agree with the original poster, that last paragraph worries me. Anytime I see the state trying to pass more regulation I just shudder. What they did to jet skis was a joke.

Ignorant dorks with big mouths are killing tourism and the economy. One guy is going to single handedly alter the distribution of sharks around the islands by going >3 miles offshore and couple hours pe day?

The bottom line is: we don't need to keep expanding the Tourism industry. Let's put our energy into businesses that help Hawaii, like Farming. The biggest problem we have yet to face is the unsustainability of our economy. Shark tours do not help. We must expand the organic farming movement across the state, making more farm leases available and resources for people to get started.

I was watching the news last night and I found the crowd to act like a frenzy of sharks. They absolutely showed no class. They were very derogatory and did not give the gentleman an opportunity to express his views. Shame on them. They were nuts. That just shows you what kind of characters hang out in that area.

Exactly why Hawaii has a reputation for being a 3rd world "colony" of the US. Guam is more civilized than that hellhole you call Oahu.
