Chuukese man gets life term for murder - Hawaii News

Full story: Honolulu Star-Bulletin

A native of Chuuk who asked that he be sent back home rather than prison was sentenced yesterday to serve at least 10 years of a life term for the fatal stabbing of an 18-year-old man in December 2007.

The State really needs to look into the crime wave that flooded Hawaii when the Micronesian population arrived. Not sure why, but - compared to other low-income minorities - they are much more inclined to violent felony criminal behavior.

And the 'its because of cultural differences' argument doesn't hold water. Theft, rape, assault, and murder are considered unacceptable behaviors in all cultures. Also, the 'US did nuclear testing in their homeland' defense is weak. Regardless of the past tragedy, they must live by the same laws as the rest of society.

"At sentencing yesterday Ham's lawyer said the stabbing was the result of a misunderstanding because of language and cultural differences."

This is why the US has INS, you learn the language, history, and culture. How can one survive without understanding the language? How you kona get a job is you can't understand your boss or customers?

Why don't we send immigrants back to the home country after the first time they violate any state or federal laws? It would probably save lives and lots of tax monies in the form of less jail time, etc.

The cost of living in Hawaii is HI plus all the tax monies are going to their section 8 payout, food stamps, housing rent, medical bills, etc.

This a perfect example of a government running wild. Back during the great exodus from Europe to the United States, it was understood by those immigrants that to assimulate into American society, they would have to learn the customs, culture, and most importantly, the language. And learn they did. Now, we have a government that kotows to all cultures by teaching THEIR language in our schools, requiring companies to have multi-lingual on their phone systems. Press 1 for English, 2 for Spanish, 3 for, etc., etc. Does anyone remember the old saying, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do!"

The problem with the vast majority of the Micronesian population in Hawaii is their lack of education. Those people are the very ones who cause problems in our public school system through their lack of care for academics, and total disregard of the law. Micronesians have a direct impact on the failing status of a number of our public high schools due to their poor scores on standardized tests. The amount of money we are spending on these Micronesians cannot be fully justified as American society does not benefit from their presence in the U.S. Rather, we are footing the bill for their irresponsible actions. Policies need to be changed to provide these people with other forms of reparation for the bombing that occurred during World War II. A viable option would be to curb Micronesian immigration by sending medical aid and educators to Micronesia. Although this may not totally eliminate the financial burden and existing problems, the negative impact Micronesians have on our society may be reduced.

Now in travel magazines I see advertisements for the beautiful unspoiled land and beaches of Micronesia. Of course, they have sent all their trash here where we are forced to contend with it.
We would be supporting this guy either in jail or out of jail. If their land is so dangerous why did he beg to return.

The story is that a church goes to micro and beings them here and signs them up for welfare and everything else where they are put first in line.

Now, since there seem to be few men with them, the katrinas are arriving and hooking up with them so they can be supported also.

I would rather see all this nonsense stopped and the state purchase Turtle Bay. No real reason but I hate to see that nice area completely paved over also.

What a mess.

Good points about their lack of interest in education...

I have a friend who teaches at a large Oahu public school, and she says that the vast majority of the Micronesians don't care at all about their kids' education. And their children don't care much either.

The facts are simple...most Micronesians are in Hawaii (and the mainland US) to collect on freebie welfare and medical care. I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule, but this is a group of immigrants who are dragging society down.

Many Americans give the Mexican immigrants a hard time, but at least they are coming to work their okoles off. Gotta respect that. Micros just want handouts.

I thought it was a privledge to live in Hawaii.

Take these "aliens" (ALL those not born and raised in Hawaii)- brown, white, yellow, or black - and ship them out (and keep them out) as soon as they break the law.

I, my parents, my grandparents did not work hard, pay my taxes and make Hawaii what it is so these "aliens" can come here and ruin it.

We have enough problems as is, no need these imported problems too.

I'd say the majority of them are. I've seen 1st hand these immigrants working at a Taco Bell. They play around alot(talking to each other, wise cracking, etc.), they have a sloppy manner about them in what they do, I also heard them talk back to the manager and heard the manager repeatedly asking to repeat their comments as to show her authority and see if they'll repeat it louder to her instead of a mumble, I could tell the manager was getting fed up with them.

This went on for a month or two, it looked like they hired a bunch of them but... they are no longer employed there. I wouldn't have kept patronizing them much longer if they were still they're. As a customer, I don't need to see the lazy/sloppiness or hear the wise cracking talk while ordering my food. If they had started to put together the food(making the burritos/tacos/etc. for sure I would have been out of there. Unclean looking to say the least

bro, read what you just wrote, you're stereotyping the Pacific Islanders. However violent or non-violent they are, the micronesians stand out of the crowd by FAR! I lived in Waianae and had no problems there at retail/fast food establishments as far as customer service goes. Even the community is good depending where you live just like any other community in the State. But never have I seen what I witnessed at that Taco Bell and I assume the manager experienced it 1st hand and let them go.

The compact needs to be changed. Instead of the Micronesians being sent to Hawaii, which causes a drain on our public welfare funds, they should be sent to a different state each year. Once every 50 years each state would have the chance to support these people. It's only fair.
I really don't think anyone from Hawaii made or set off the nuclear weapons tested on their islands.
