Ref Sandra Pohl's ltr, "Hawaii homeless must be helped."

Okay Sandra, give us your specifics as to how you would handle this and not more of the political smoke and mirrors. This State has addressed the homeless problem spending over $5+ MILLION dollars of the taxpayers money. Churches have all but drained their members to feed and clothe the homeless. Agencies have institutes training programs.

What would you suggest?

Ref Thomas Stocks's ltr, "Tax on fireworks would cut usage."

That's basically what the license is, a tax. It's not working. A total ban on personal fireworks, with severe pentalities for those selling. That is what is needed.'enough already.

What would I suggest? Maybe next time the USA wants to bomb, invade, and occupy a foreign country, making up stacked up lies to fool the thinking, realize these "wars" last decades, costing a trillion. And instead of getting a false sense of joy because "their" people can raise their purple fingers, spend the hundreds of billions here at home. That homeless guy in a wheelchair with the cardboard sign and a leg missing may have served in one of your wars.

On Oahu, with its population, something needs to be done. I like celebrating with fireworks within my own area on the Big Island (light up a strand at midnight to bring in the New Year), but with the number of illegal fireworks raising, everyone has to do their own part. (like letting people, even families know what's right from wrong and not be so macho as to who can blow up the most stuff, like kids). Sooner or later it someone will get hurt and it could be someone we know. Just a thought...
