it is just wrong to be naming state land and/or facilities after sitting politicians that are going to running for office again

you are basically saying that it is ok for a presidential campaign to permanently use public facilities for self-promotion

if you folks can't see this --- you need to get into a different business than writing editorials

It would be far better to rename the Chicago Sanitay Ship Canal after him, after all he considers THAT his real hometown.

This is not a good idea either. I don't dislike the guy, but he really needs to prove that he left a legacy to have things named after him. Getting elected isn't enough. A legacy will only be proven after he has left office. Plus, Sandys is a famous name in the world of bodysurfing and bodyboarding. The name of that beach evokes a lot of memories and emotion for a lot of people. Changing the name there is just wrong. The President may have bodysurfed there, but he is not one of the major figures associated with that spot. I have been riding there for almost two decades and I know of legends who rode there before I was born, but I had never heard of Barack Obama until he was a figure in national politics.

There is a park accross from Punahou School. That is the appropriate site for a memorial to President Obama. Maybe have have a library at Punahou named after the President. Before we even consiser Sandy Beach shouldn't we look to name Waimea Bay after Eddie Aikau? The answer is NO because beaches in Hawaii go way beyond a inidividual person or accomplishments. Beaches in Hawaii belong to everyone! If Mufi is serious, name the first rail station after President Obama!

Top Ten Things In Hawaii That We Could Name For President Obama
10. The Natatorium: Because it's about to crumble, just like Obama's presidency.
9. The Kailua sewage treatment facility: because it's full of the same stuff as the President's economic policies.
8. The parking lot at Ala Moana: because what Tim Chapman was doing there is the same thing Obama has been doing to the American public.
7. The hairpin turn on the Kailua side of the Pali: because it's like first getting elected by promising peace but then going the opposite direction by sending more troops to Afghanistan.
6. Punahou School: because, according to his autobiography, that's where Obama spent his teenage years partying and goofing off in preparation for being a politician.
5. Kapiolani Hospital: because although Nairobi General Hospital in Kenya might be more appropriate it's in Africa and we have to pick one here in Honolulu.
4. Schofield Barracks: because all you have to do is remove a couple of letters from the second word.
3. Waimanalo Gulch Landfill: because then Colleen Hanabusa can feel close to the President without being elected to Congress from a district she doesn't even live in.
2. The new rail line: because a giant waste of taxpayer money is the perfect thing to associate with a Democrat.
1. Koko Crater Stables: because that's where you'll find a horse's rear end, which is what many people feel like after they realize who they voted into the White House.

BAD IDEA

This beach is known as the most dangerous beach in Hawaii and people call it “the beach of broken necks” for a reason. Many accidents have happened here. On most days of the year, you will see red warning flags and signs posted on the beach that warn people about the dangers of this beach.

Another really bad idea coming from the SB editorial staff. Let Punahou change their name, if this nonsense is really that important.

Dman suggestion that if any names change it should be at Punahou. What have we got to do with changing landmarks to honor someone that has not earned it? Picnicking at a public spot or surfing at sandy beach is hardly grounds to name it after someone. If he ended current wars and created jobs for everyone I would change all my grandkids middle names to Obama in a hearbeat. Mufi and its so obvious is looking for brownie points. Why doesn't Mufi call Punahou and asked them to change the gym name to Obama Gymnasium, he played basketball there?

It is premature to change beach park names. I hope that this will not happen. Up to now Obama's policies/actions are a hugh disappointment. Naming a park for him would be just an embarrassment.

BO has not done anything worthy of having anything named after him. He has done nothing but cause chaos as the Pres. He was present at his birth but he did not know where he was. Has just sent 30,000 to their possible death and then gets the Peace Prize? What crap is that?
Just wait for his next big announcement.
Name absolutely nothing after him until he proves himself (and giving rousing speeches does not qualify).

The editorial writer's article is as stupid as the Mayor's idea! Obama WHO? Getting credit for doing nothing except getting elected? Give me a break! His primary attribute for all these people is that he is not G.W. Bush! All these people, as is the rest of the United States, is being led down the path of economic ruin, by this president and our elected representatives by their out of control spending. "We have to spend our way out of this economic crisis." What the hell kind of plan is that? "Stupid is as stupid does!"

I agree with the SB.

Our President likes to swim around and surf at Sandy Beach.

Name that after President Obama.

In so far as Mufi wanting to rename Magic Island, consider the following.

Magic Island is an artificial island, built on rubbish land fill.

That's right folks. Rubbish.

So, if Mufi wants to rename Magic Island, it should be named after Mufi.

Mufi Island.

Already got the Mufi canal.

But, why stop there?

why don't we just name it Obama, instead of "Oahu"...come on people...If we want to honor a politician how about naming something after Inouye or Burns.
