Best upgrade for the airport would be to eliminate the wheezing, roach infested, sagging, bus Nazi hosting, Wikik Wiki bus system and replace it with an enclosed, air conditioned, walkway with high speed moving walk ways. Next upgrade the interiors to a brighter atmosphere. Dump the mindless drivel PA system that is constantly talking shibai. Everyone laughs at it as it is always telling you obsolete and out of date information. I mean is there any US airport that is not a non smoking one? Hello, time to upgrade the tape. Also a system to prepay your parking ticket as you leave the terminal so you can bypass the manual pay system at the exit. No need all those people slowing us down and making more money for the airport taking tickets. Just another day in the Nei

Top Ten Proposed Improvements To Honolulu Airport

10. Stage daily Sumo tournaments to entertain Japanese tourists
9. Install permanent "Victory in the Pacific" WWII exhibit to remind Japanese tourists who won the war
8. Spice up the Wiki-Wiki bus by renaming it "Tiger's Wild Ride"
7. Add twenty ABC stores so the airport looks just like Waikiki
6. Build a decent Visitor Center for tourists - no, wait, that would make too much sense and we can't have that
5. Let Frisky the Narco Dog wander the terminal sniffing for drugs and randomly humping flyers' legs
4. Create Baggage Claim that resembles a giant roulette wheel for that "You're Still In Vegas" ambience all locals treasure
3. Program giant TV monitors to show UH mens basketball and allow waiting passengers to watch Bob Nash's career go down in flames
2. Require airport art exhibit to pay thousands of dollars each for crude crayon drawings by Legislator's kids
1. Add three more bars to accomodate all the new pilots

Thanks to special funds, the only people that aren't well funded are our teachers. Of course we have plenty of cash for fancy new stuff for the airport even though useage in way down.

It's kind of like your parents saying that money is so tight in the household that they have to eliminate your $10 allowance and then the next day they go out and buy new $4000 gold plated rims for their car with cash.

Our government is sitting on piles of money in numerous special funds, capital improvement fund, and tobacco settlement. Then the legislature raises the working man's taxes and slams our teachers. The legislature did/does have the power to re-distribute this money!

It's time for a new legislature in 2010 - one that practices financial responsibility.

And I thought those crayon drawings posted at the legislature were done by State senate leadership. Thanks for the info.

HOnolulu airport is one of the ugliest, if not the ugliest airport I've ever been too. It should be more enclosed like most other airports are. Everything just looks so old and weathered.

Judging from the posts, most people are unaware of the details behind the upgrades. If they knew they would be shocked by the waste, mismanagement and poor planning.

HNL is a real shithole. The shitters are old, dark and foul-smelling. The bare concrete pillars and walls throughout the airport should be painted in some bright tropical mural. The airport should enlist school children to design them and pay some out of work artists to paint them. Those wiki-wiki buses should be retired and new electric powered tram or train on rails should be installed. The homeless bums that urinate in the baggage claim areas should be herded up and bussed to the State Capital where they can crap in those beloved reflecting pools. Take that Senators!!!

Ask yourself, when was the last time you did not travel to a destination because the airport was substandard or not entertaining or interesting. The function of an airport is to move people. Please limit improvements to things that actually get me into the airport quickly and get me out of the airport quickly. I have no interest to start my tourist or business experience in the airport either coming or going.

Waihee thought this way also. It cost the Airports millions in potential federal funding due to violations of grant agreements. If you want an Airport that has smooth runways and taxiways w/o potholes, Federal funding comes in extremely useful. If that isn't a priority and you don't care that the airport shuts down, then this money can be diverted to other uses. Your call.

And when you have a layover of 6 hours, where are you going to go or what are going to do? How about when you arrive for your flight and you have some time to kill or forgot to buy a knick knack for that "important" somebody where you are going. Some people like to shop, some don't. The airport has these for the former and also as a method to help pay to keep the airport operating. If not for these concessionaires, your airfare would be significantly higher as the airlines would have to pay the entire bill which they would then roll in to the ticket prices.

Many times. I avoid LAX as much as possible, for example, because it's another poorly built monstrosity with heaping traffic. Problem is, I *need* to go to LA often for business. Majority of travelers into HNL do NOT need to come here. They come here by choice. Make them uncomfortable enough and it adds up to why they should NOT come to Hawaii anymore, with more attractive destinations available.

Honolulu International was a great airport and wasn't until 9/11 that they finally realized it was due for a change. Too bad it's 15-20 years overdue. Also, Hilo & Kona really need a overhaul too since it's not that necessary to travel into HNL as noted earlier and would be nice they get more than a few touch-ups.

There were plans to expand and modernize in 1989. Unfortunately, the Japanese economy went south and the funds dried up (Governor Cayetano.) The plans were put on the back burner and only the inter-island terminal was built as it was already started. Again, plans were developed in the late 90's to improve the terminal and 9/11 occurred and Governor Lingle cancelled all building because the economy went south.
All the previous plans were scrapped in 2003 and new consultants/architects were hired to develop new ideas to expand the terminal. Some of these ideas are now being enacted in an attempt to get started before the next regime change.
The politicians need to be absolved of onerous burden of running the airport system. The consultants are making millions each time the plans change, yet nearly nothing is built. With a stable consistent management team, the airport could plan and improve as funds allowed w/o paying exorbitant consultant fees over and over and actually have new buildings as needed instead of as requested by "special friends" or "donors" of a given political campaign.
It is time for a port authority or to divest the State of the airports and let each county run their own airports to minimize the political wrangling at the top and the potential for political gain at the detriment of the airport system users.
