Sue, I agree with you. I hate the way I feel because I never thought of myself as a hateful person. I truely cannot wait til I can move away from here. I will never disagree with anyone when they say Hawaii is not the mainland, as they are so right about that. It is as if all young people my age here have no identity. It is really sad. They say "people are people" but sorry that is not always the case.
u must live in kalihi or waipahu or ewa beach?...filipino culture shock was too much for u huh...yeah id go crazy if i lived in those areas...

There is a huge difference between filipinos in Hawaii and the mainland. I had so many good filipino friends growing up on the mainland. Why are they so different here?
its a matter of pride...the mainland filipinos want to be known as filipino americans-they take pride in commanding the english language and try to illiminate the rolling of thr rrrs when they speak...the local filipinos are more cultural orientated...roll the rrrs when they speak, no american pride....only filipino pride...speak da way day like no care no mattah...kine...

Hmm, very interesting observation...thanks for pointing that out. Thinking back on my experiences and interchanges this is very much the case, though I sense that other demographic considerations are a part of this like education, professionalism, etc.

Hmmm, you may have a point there. I had a new Filipino 4th grader in class yesterday, from California. I asked her when she came to the U.S. and she said in Grade 3. She has no accent! She lost it so quickly! And I have Filipino students who've been here for years and they still have their thick accents.

A teacher asked two Ilocano boys to spell some words. He told the first one to spell "window" and use it in a sentence. The first one said"
"W-I-N-D-O-W". The teacher said "very good! Now use it in a sentence." The boy said "Window we eat?"

The teacher asked to second boy to spell "defeat" and the boy instantly responded "D-E-F-E-A-T." The teacher said "very good! Now use it in a sentence." The boy said "Soap and water is good for defeat."

For Agapito:

So, why don't you go home to the beautiful, peaceful Philippines? If it is so much better at home, then GO HOME. No, of course it not better there; you are hated there, also, because you commit yukky crimes and have no respect for other people. GO HOME, and stay there. This the strongest message I have ever written, but I believe in it's truth. You pollute every land you go to, because your personal habits are abominable. We Americans don't want any part of it.

I forgot to take my Thorazine this morning and no, of course it not better there; I am hated there, also, because I commit yukky crimes and have no respect for other people, the folks in Texas can't stand me. I plant to GO HOME, and stay there. This the strongest message I have ever written while taking Haldol, but I believe in it's truth. I pollute every land with my presence, because my personal habits are abominable - I have been known to flush sanitary napkins down public toilets. Stupid Bible-belt Tex-Americans don't want any part of me.
Thanks for the comment, bjr.

it goes back to getting ahead in america and i think it follows for japanese/chinese cultures too...many of the asian americans on the mainland try to shake off their asian speak and just learn to command the english language...to some degree the locals here do the same...just in the central ethnic areas they will maintain a dual language culture...while on the mainland only english will be used in the household...

example of central ethnic areas for filipinos-kalihi,ewa beach, waipahu...will most likely have kids who speak with thick accents...then there are filipinos who live outside of the central ethnic areas...the kids there will speak english much better since there is less ethnic/peer pressure to speak the same like the others...again there are exceptions and some central ethnic areas do inspire others to work harder to get out of the central ethnic areass.

I went to a filipino funeral recently and you shoulda seen the trash around the dining area they left behind. like in the planters and on the wall on the lanai. Who does things like that? They're no better than the Micros when it comes to littering. Would mainland flips do that?

the mainland filipinos would be more refined culturally because they have to adapt to US standards not like hawaii where ethnicity is the norm and widely accepted...the filipinos at the funeral was probably from the central ethnic areas and if they came straight from the PI... probably lived in the provinces or rural village areas. again not all filipinos are like that...
and to pose the question...im not filipino but have filipino friends and observed their behavior...
