It is not just men! My friend's aunt died of this after a little sore on her thigh got infected. By the time she went to the hospital, it was already too late.

Hawaii doctors must be stupid and treated the flesh eating bacteria wrong. A mainland doctor treated his 17 year old son who had the same disease and cured him in a few hours. I guess Hawaii doctors are ignorant of the correct treatment. Come to think of it all the local patients who died were treated for minor common injuries then died. Sure seems our local doctors are lacking in knowledge on how to treat this Necrotizing Faciitis bacteria.

The mainland doctors have a 100% cure rate with Necrotizing Faciitis using Dermacyn whereas Hawaii doctors have 100% failure and death rate treating the same disease. What does that tell you about Hawaii doctors and our local hospitals?

actually, even the most competent physician cannot do anything for the patient who waits too long to come in for a check.

this type of infection (staph, MRSA, necrotizing fasciitis) spreads quickly and can kill within a matter of a day or two. we all wait to see if the problem (pain, swelling) will go away for a day or so before we even consider visiting a physician.

this is just a sad reminder that waiting is not always a good thing. as others have said, just be aware of what is happening, and watch out for warning signs... be seen ASAP as soon as you realize that something is not right in the healing process... let's just learn something from this, so that we don't have to make our families suffer in the same way.

My condolences to the Sonoda ohana on this heartbreaking tragedy. This man died too young from something that could have been treated if caught earlier. If there is a lesson to be learned it is don't ignore symptoms of illness or injury. Listen to your body and seek medical help in a timely manner.

What about us young people who play and get scratches and cuts all over our body as a routine thing, thats what kids do. We cannot be going to the doctor all the time. So we just have to take our chances and hope we wakeup the next morning and be thankful we are'nt dead? What a life. I hope the CIA doesn't use this bacteria as a weapon of mass destruction.

Why does this bacteria only kill young, healthy men? No girls have died this way. Why? Are females immune to this bacteria? Doctors please answer.
You can visit websites in support of this type of necrotizing bacteria and see it does in fact afflict women/girls etc. www.nnff.org and fact check but MOST IMPORTANTLY educate yourself.

BTW, there is no such proof that cure rate is 100% on the mainland. People have died so there skews your 100% stat.

really, plenty times during my 'hanabutta' days when we would get strawberries, road rash, etc. and nothing would come of it.

i guess it's the overuse of penicillin that helped create this mutant strain of penicillin-resistant bacteria.

Actually, you'r close in your assessment, It is the MISUSE (meaning NOT taking ALL of your prescribed antibiotic meds regardless if you're feeling better) that promotes and creates, for lack of a better word, mutant strains such as MRSA, VRE etc. And the over prescribed use of any "cillin" family for VIRAL infections to include the common cold and MANY others. Please educate yourself people so we can stop "creating" more super bugs!!

Necrotizing Fasciitis is not as rare as people hope. What's not reported is the hundreds of other cases of "mild" necrotizing fasciitis hospitals deal with every year.
The only cure is early intervention. Don't wait too long before seeking medical attention.
My prayers are with this family at their time of loss.

Local MD's are actually good at treating this stuff since our incidence of MRSA etc are higher in Hawaii than elsewhere. For every 1 save you have about 100 deaths. That one doctor you mention got lucky!!! Dont make generalizations!!!
