i have lived in hawaii for 5 years now. and i have been called the crulest names in the book. all because i am white. i couldnt care less on what a persons color is. i tryed to be friends with alot of the locas here. but they ave called me names, they hav threatend me. and one grl tried to push me down a hill at school. while 7 of her friends were cheering her on! i believe that hawaii is very rasist. not all locals. but some. and it just hurts mentally and phisically.

Just like everywhere in the world, people do not like change. Hawaii is extremely racist and so is Alabama and Italy,San Diego and Poland. It is not the place but the mindset of the person. Racism is a very ugly ignorance and just needs an lesson in manners. I'm 100% Sicilian married to a Hawaiian/Phillipino and I love my kids and what they stand for. UNITY,UNITY and more UNITY. People are drawn to eachother for a reason, embrace it and teach those who don't.

They aren't racist, they just fearful. Hell i'm hawaiian and I don't think i'm any better then a white guy, japanese guy, filipino guy or whatever type of "guy".

If you notice, the ones who show respect actually have a sense of pride and prestige about them. The ones that talk trash are the ones who aren't getting anywhere in life. I am not just talking about financially but spiritually and culturally. Look at the protests on the community stations preaching sovereignty and telling the goverment and white man to get out of hawaii. Take a stroll down their neighborhoods and see for every one hard core true believer in sovereignty there are five of his/her friends who are happily milking the public system. Sporting their F150's and 4,000$ in gold bracelets only to snap at the kid dressed in bolos (that's tattered clothing for those who don't know the lingo) while they bust out their ebt card paying for their bbq steaks so they can party and drink up like life's all G.

Next time someone walks by you and snuffs you cause you "haole" or "whitey" or one "crackah" or whateva, take it from dis hawaiian, just move on bra cause dey already proved to you dat dey less den you bu. Keep yo head up, keep dose grades up and when you become manager or ceo or doctor whoever, attorney whoever etc. You can always turn the tables when they be coming to you for your services :)

Hawai'i, like every other state in the Union, does have its problems. Alot of it stems from the past and how our people were treated. I came home last week ( I live in Vegas right now) and I was so happy to be home, I almost cried. I was treated like crap by the haoles and japanese kids in my GT class, always told that I wasn't good enough to be in the same class as them because I was (the only)Hawaiian there. I had to learn how to deal w/ ignorance, and prejudice. For all of the people who live there, do not forget what true aloha is. It is a spirit of love, of respect for your fellow man, regardless of what the color of their skin is, how much money they don't make or who they choose to be in a relationship with. As much as I love Hawai'i, I am also a Christian. Ultimately, this earth is not ours, and we need to start taking better care of it and each other.

The Japanese caused most of the racial problems
in Hawaii. They do not feel superior, they feel inferior and try to fake superiority. They weakened and diluted the Hawaiian people more than any other race. The Japanese hold on the land has hurt the people of Hawaii causing poverty and homelessness. The leader of Japan looks silly trying to look like a Haole with pompous hairdo and cowboy boots. At least Tojo looked Japanese.

One quick simple question. I was there on vacation last week and I saw this word printed a lot, but didn't hear it spoken: how to you pronounce "haole"?

BTW, I got nothing but ALoha love in Hawaii!

Enjoyed your very intelligent take on this subject. Too bad more people can't see the world through your eyes.
I lived in Ewa years ago. I'm white and I lived there with an American Indian (who everyone probably assumed was just another local boy as long as he didn't talk). Also my other roomate was a Samoan. I never really had any problems with any locals.
The type of racism brought up here exists anywhere especially when your the minority, whatever that happens to be. Theres always going to be people that view others that way. As you said, they are people who are unhappy with themselves and can only pump themselves up by running others into the ground. Its difficult to turn the other cheek, but the wisest thing to do would be to treat the racists as you would have them treat you when the oportunity and right moment arises. It might surprise the heck out of them. And open their mind from the mask of fear they wear.

I was the only "papolo boy" (sp?) in my freshman class at two schools in 1979, Stevenson Intermidiate and Kalaheo HS. When I was playing basketball on the playgrounds,I was o.k.! Lots of other times I was treated pretty poorly. It was not fun at times. I could not wait to get off the island and back to the mainland.
As an adult I can look back and remember being the only Black kid in my Los Angeles county school and sometimes being treated the same way, to a lesser extent. It happens everywhere. Each individual that acts ignorant feels justified in doing so. Even in my own race. The "we were treated poorly in the past" excuse runs rampant everywhere!
My advice is to "suck it up." I wish I would have stayed a little longer. My brother has been there for 30 years now. He is well known in the travel touist industry and my nephew is a pretty successful Cadillac / Hummer salesman in Honolulu. They will probably never leave.
Hawaii is still one of my favorite vacation spots. I love to go back, as I will in 3 weeks. Each time I go... I visit the school where I was pushed to the ground from behind in the school office...by a HUGE local kid... a girl! Looking back... it was kind of funny!:)
Hang in there and don't worry about the idiots. Though there are times to "push back"... focus on the good people of the islands... who greatly out number the few knuckleheads!
Aloha!

Hawaii has far too may Japanese and Chinese. It's not the Hawaii Islands it's the Japan-China Islands. Those are the ones who should be made to leave in large numbers. Isn't there a law that limits the number of Japanese, they attacked our country. I did not say No Japanese I said a very limited. Our government should re-claim their land and property in Hawaii, send them to Japan and share the land and properties with the Americans. This problem is worse than any Latino Immigration problem- much worse. Hawaii has gone to the Japanese!

A huge problem in Hawaii and Oahu in particular is the use of the land for experiments growing genectically modified crops. No tests have been required to show whether the chemicals used are safe for humans..many countries have banned GM agriculture. The government is using tax dollars to support GM crops without knowing the safety hazards. organicconsumers.org has more on this problem.

There was no government sponsored attack from Arabs at 911. The country of Japan(government) attacked the United States. And no matter about the talk of racism, our country is being attacked again by Japan in terms of screwing up the economy, especially in Hawaii, and other states in The U.S. as well. They are more visible in Hawaii. Much of the take-over by Japanese investors in Hawaii are by Japanese nationals, not U.S. citizens. There are just a few Hawaiian people left, most are mixed, especially thanks to Japan. They didn't have to bomb us this time, they just came in with breeders and took over. The rich Japanese own Hawaii and the poor just keep getting kicked in their Butts. Is it true that Donald Trump built a huge resort in Hawaii and immediately sold it to a Japanese investor? No wonder the Miss Universe(Trump's beauty contest) was born in Japan. Collusion. I feel for the average local Hawaiian citizen(no matter what the race) getting taken. They're so frustrated by being kicked in the teeth and not sharing in the wealth they deserve- they hate lots. Re-taking the land and sharing it with the citizens sounds like a good idea. I also read where the granddaughter of Japan's World War 2 terrorist Tojo is running for office to lead Japan toward being a more aggresssive country, as she says, like it was under Tojo. Yes, It IS time to remove so much Japanese influence in the U.S. Open your eyes America!
