The rice shortage brings back memories of past shipping strikes where people will hoard rice which is one of Hawaii's staples. I can just see people going store to store buying up the rice.

This situation is interesting. I'm going to check how the item stocks are affected to include those that include breads, potatoes and pasta because I suspect "rice" was singled out.

did they take into account the food drive?? some places have contests over who can donate the most and bulk rice is an easy way to rack up the poundage. it'd be neat to see a correlation between this rice thing and the Hawaii Food Bank.

Didn't this hoarding start a few days ago someplace else (PI maybe) I sort of remember the military going around to warehouses looking for stockpiled rice.
Also Haitians are rioting over food but I am not sure rice is a big deal there.

The U.S. produces about 8 million metric tons of rice. The U.S. exports about 3 million metric tons of rice. The average American consumes 15+ pounds of rice annually (about 2 million metric tons). Raise the price by one cent per pound and...hmmmmm.

How long before unleaded rice?

No matter what, gotta start the day with a fresh hot cup of coffee, the fresh smell of cooked rice, portugese sausage, spam and eggs. Okay world bring it on, ready!!
Make sacrafices to make sure you get the key components to kick off the day, right. If you start right you get good chance to have a pretty good day. IMO
