Seems things sure has changed. My father, Don Shaw was the Chief of Police betwwen Honaker and Lebanon for nearly 30 years. He retired in 1985.
I became a Police Officer in Honaker in 1982, 2 months before the end of my Senior year in high school. My father ran a very tight ship. He would have never put up with any of his officers acting like this. I live in Ohio now and I sure miss home and the people. I wish I had never left. |

For the last few months me and a friend have tried to get help from the police in Russell county. They don't do crap to help you!!! I even had one laugh when I asked him to be present while getting my kids back from my ex like I was stupid when my ex has made several awful threats to kill me (and I even have a protective order against him). I think officer Hughs thought it was a joke or something. They're not interested in protecting anyone...that much I know.

ITS EASY FOR PEOPLE TO SIT BACK AND JUDGE AND SAY POLICE DONT DO THIS OR THAT! YOU PEOPLE HAVE NO CLUE WHAT POLICE OFFICERS GO THROUGH EVERYDAY @ WORK! FIRST OF ALL EVERYONE LIES TO YOU ABOUT EVERYTHING! SO REALLY YOU CANT TRUST ANYONE! SECOND OF ALL THERE ARE ALOT OF STEPS YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW.......YOU CANT ALWAYS BE SOMEONES SECURITY GUARD! LAW ENFORCMENT IS A STRESSFULL JOB.....IM NOT TAKING FOR THE LAZY ONES BUT U HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THERE IS ALOT YOU HAVE TO PUT UP WITH AND THESE GUYS DO MORE THAN YOU GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR! THESE GUYS ARE KIND OF LIKE THE MILITARY FIGHTING EVERYDAY FOR OUT SAFETY HERE! WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OPUTTING YOU LIFE IN DANGER EVERYDAY BETWEEN PULLING SOMEONE OVER THAT MIGHT HAVE A GUN, OR FIGHT YOU, OR GETTING HIT BY A CAR (WHICH CAN KILL YOU)......OR BEING IN THE NATIONAL GUARD AND GOING FOR DRILL ONCE A MONTH FOR A WEEKEND? MOST PEOPLE WOULD SAY MILITARY! NO!!!! YOU SHOULD THANK A POLICE OFFICER BECASUE WHEN CRAP HITS THE FAN.....THEY WILL BE THERE!

You have given a great job description that they know before they take the job. It's not for everyone but if you take that oath then you should uphold it. I know from first hand experience on three different occasions that the Russell County Sheriffs office did not do their job. Twice was related to burglary nothing was ever followed through with. I harrassed them for over four months and nothing was done! The third was a domestic violence issue with a neighbor where three small children were present and the officer took the guy away for maybe thiry minutes and brought him back to the home because he regretted what he done. I don't think that was proper protocol! All three situations there was a different officer in charge so I think it may be typical of the office. |

1 I only wish my father was still around to help out with the drug problem. I would take my old job back in a second if I thought the Dept. was hiring. |

Well, from what you have told me about your father, you should be very proud of him and it sounds like he knew how to run a dept. The one thats being run now is just rediculous. All it is is one big circus act. You always see these officers on their cell phones just jabbering away or you see them at the nearest pizza place or restaurant in town. I do agree there are SOME, which is very few and far between, that do care, but not many. I know of one man that beat up his wife and kids and he is walking around right now. No jail time. Well maybe he went to jail for a second, but that is it. I have a suggestion. If you know how to run a dept like your dad did, then why dont you come and run for sheriff and I am very serious. Ill vote for you and Im sure there are alot of other people that do agree with me. Blessings

1 Thank you for your very kind words. The problem about running for office is that we have been gone since 1985. I don't know how many people are there that would remember my father or me. When we left, Tom Taylor was the Chief. He was the SGT. for my father. Ask around and see if anyone remembers dad. Don Shaw. I have known the Chief over in Lebaon (Mark) since I was in high school and he had that black Corvette. Stopped in and talked for awhile back in 2005. I would like to know if Honaker is looking for any officers. Give me 6 months and the right officers and I would promise the drug problem would be over. Sounds like it is time to get the Dept. back to when people came up and shake hands and pass a few minutes with an officer. Dad always said 80% of Police work is what the public tells you. Noy hard to treat people with simple respect, use to be a common southern thing. I don't know Steve Dye and I do belong to the other party. Thanks again. |

I have thought about what you said. I would love to come down there and hold a meeting with the people pf the town and listen to what they have to say. And I would like the people to listen to my plan on how to get the town and Police Dept. back on the right track.
It would take alittle time but it can be done. When my father took over as Chief the town was in a mess but he was able to change that and his job lasted for 30 years. I learned from the best and I have spent my entire life in Law Enforcement. With your help we can fix these problems. If someone wants to talk about this please send me an email, Bfrjds1981@aol.com I am more than willing to make the 5 hour drive down there if someone can find a place to hold a meeting and we can get enough of the towns' people to show up. Things can get better if enough people can just let the leaders of the town know they are tired of what is going on. You have my support, can I get yours?Remember, the journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step. Talk to your friends and let me know what you think. |
