Great book by J. Michael O'Connor. I attended Honaker High during that time and never realized the administration and county school board was so corrupt. The book is fictional but if you are from Honaker you realize much of the stuff written is very close to the truth if not the truth. Way to go Coach O.

I haven't read the book but have heard some things abt it. Considering who wrote it, lets be honest he was ALWAYS an ASS! I always thought he had mental issue and my understanding of the book seems I was right tht many yrs ago. If thngs were tht bad then why didn't he open his mouth at tht time. Merely a way to mk a dollar!

Coach "0" is a great guy as well as teacher and Coach. What he endured overseas most of us can never begin to understand. I had him for a teacher and a coach, I consider him a close friend and always will. If you were serious about school he was good to you, if you screwed around he called you out on it.

He was one of my High School baseball coaches. I was around him for four years and never seen him treat anyone bad. The guy took a lot of crap from true ASS's and went out and did his job everyday. The so called guidance counselor at that time informed me that I was not college material. If not for Coach O and Coach Harding I would not have a 4 year college degree to my credit today. Coach O cared about students and wanted to see them get the best out of life.

Coach O is a great teacher!!!! He didn't take shit from anyone and thats why some people LOVE to harrass him. Most of Honaker is filled with people with small minds and that was something he couldn't stand. The book is a great read. Good job Coach...You gave me hope when no one else would or could. You let me know I was smart and capable of doing whatever I wished. The sky was the limit. You had a great impact in my life.
Thank you Coach O for being you!!

Coach O was an AMAZING teacher. Not only did he make my mother feel hopeful about her future when he taught her, but he made me feel as if I could do anything despite the color of my skin and judgements made by others in Russell county's school system. People often do not like to hear the truth (especially when it is not all roses and rainbows) and Coach O was nothing if not honest. He would never harm a student! This is just the fabrication of people who did not like what he stood for which was honesty, equality, and enlightenment.

Thank you so much Coach for everything that you have done for my family and I! We love you!

The only thing wrong with Coach O's book is that he tells it like it is ... There isn't anything he writes that hasn't been told in Honaker for years - and boy, is there plenty more to tell! Ask anyone who was actually in school then, and they will tell you it is all true. The only people who are going to have anything negative to say are the ones who he paints such accurate portraits of.

As to the people who say he just writes crap about everyone else and says he is the greatest and best in Honaker, well, he WAS the best and greatest teacher in Honaker. You obviously never had the chance to sit in the circle in his classroom!

Personally, I can't wait until book 2!!!

Coach O was the best teacher ever. He cared about his students, all of them, unlike some that did not. The book is a must have/must read. Could not put it down when I started reading. Attended HHS during the time elaborated on in the book and man-o-man did he tell it like it was. So if I were Carl, Bobby, Carla, Howard Matt ,Gil, Janice, Rebecca, LaMar; Hell yell I would be offended and would discourage others not to read it. "If the shoe fits, we must wear it". And boy did the right size match them all in the book. Heard some of the stories while in school but didn't really pay a lot of attention to it; actually did not care if the adult supervisors wanted to act like seniors or if the girls basketball coaches were lesbians. But after growing up a little bit, I think How Degrading Can These People Be? Do they not have any morals or self-respect? Is this why we hear so much on the news today of teachers and students engaged in sexual activities and inappropriate behavior? Why did our administrators allow this to go on? Were they also guilty? Will the small town politics of Russell County ever change in our educational system?

I was there, in the book and know most of it was factual. There are always small inconsistacies when recolecting from so many years ago (over 34 years). Bobby Sims was a better principle than he gives him credit for. As an administrator you have to look at the proponderence of the evidence presented to you and make decisions that affect peoples income, living and family. Just because "O" wanted to see someone fired doesn't mean there was enough evidence to get that done. Take Coch "O" for instance; fired twice and got his job back each time!

"O" was a good teacher and did teach much different than what we were used to. We did all those things in class that he says we did like making racists comments for example. We did this because we knew how he felt about it and could get a 30 minute lecture each time someone made a comment which was a break from taking all those notes (I guess he never caught on to it). That was a bunch of 17 year olds that had a plan to get out of a little work and I and many others are ashamed of the lengths we went to! Haven't finished the book yet, but it does bring back many thoughts. I just wish I had known how profound and intellectual he was as I would listened more intently. LOL!

Coach O was one of my favorite teachers. I learned more from him than any of the others. I remember "O's think tank" and "Knowledge is the greatest weapon on Earth"

He taught on a more mature level than most parents was accustomed to. And he wanted kids to not be intimidated so easily. I love him and Chris and look forward to getting my book, it's ordered and on it's way.

Order your's today at amazon.com ( no this is not O or anyone he asked to market his book for him ) just think we need to support our local teacher that impacted so many of us.
