5 shot in fight at south suburban bar

Five people were seriously wounded overnight in a shooting that stemmed from a fight at a tavern in south suburban Riverdale, police said.

I was born and raised in Dolton. It is heartbreaking to see once great communities turned into gangbanger territory with a gang banger mentality. More and more homes are boarded up, businesses have left, leaving large store fronts vacant. I personally know 3 people in Dolton that have been trying to sell their homes for over 1 year. ALL of the prospective buyers say the same thing. The housing market/prices are not worth moving to those neighborhoods. It is difficult to sell a six figure house in areas that have unabated graffiti, punks hanging out all over and a genral depressed feeling.

Could not agree more. I grew up onthe southside as wel and would not go there now to save my life. This is rock-solid proof of what happens when you provide section 8 housing and "give" nice housing to trashy people who don't care. They are a cancer and it spreads when the decent homeowners get sick of dealing with the problems and sell to another section 8 candidate (because as you have said, no decent homeowners will buy into a declining hood). Tragic and frustrating!!

Listen,the leaders of the black community are going to handle this like they always do. They are going to go ont tv and state that it is lack of jobs and economic oppurtunity that is causing these young men to get drunk in a bar and shoot the place up. The ministers are going to say it is years of racial oppression that is causing this behavior and white america needs to do its part on stopping these poor honor students from killing each other. I have a noble concept. Maybe the black community should look directly in the mirror on why their communities are becoming shambles instead of always looking to everyone else to fix their community.

It's a prevailing attitude of entitlement, vicitmhood, a disregard for civility, and humanity. Remember the story last week about the 16 year old who dropped her baby at a fire station on the south side? Well, apparently she decided she's equipped to have a baby afterall and came back to claim him. A couple was already in the process of adopting him (according to their post on that message board).

The comments here are insightful. Tells you something about the mentality of our nation.

I happen to live in that area. And it is not the battle field that some make it out to be. There are many upstanding individuals in the communities of Dolton and Riverdales. I enjoy where I live.

Of course we can always look around and wish things were better. But noone on earth today live in a violent free society. To the person above who lives in Lake Forest...Does Lake Forest, IL have police? Do people there have locks on their doors? If the answer to either or both question is no the maybe your area is significantly better. But if the answer is yes you have a security issue as well. So don't stand in you ivory tower looking down on Dolton/Riverdale.

Personally, I have a professional job. I am Black. I work everyday. I went to college. I have excellent credit and pay my bills on time. I enjoy where I live and I repeat it is not dispicable!!

I would love to live in a diverse affordable communtity but in this racist city and surronding suburbs there are no such places. As soon as Blacks move in whites move out. Since this country caters to whites and discounts Blacks (even though they don't discount our taxes). So when whites go so do the businesses, police presence, etc.

This is my problem now and I'm dealing with it. But look out affluent, racist (whatever color), elitists. You time is coming. What will YOU do?
