The eyes of the creatures that dwell within the great swamp serve as cameras for a Great Spirit that carefullt follows those who walk or enter into that mysterious area. I was once saved from an attack by a black bear as I walked toward Chesser Island.
On a very humid, summer day after the wild grapes were ripe, I began the five mile walk toward the island. The original Chessers, Tom,
Iva, and Huey still lived there at the time, and I had always had the urge to walk there.
Choosing that sultry day, I finished the first two miles and gazed down a fence row where I spotted four bears feeding on the wild
grapes that grew ripe on the many grapevines.
As soon as the bears spotted me, they all
ran hastily into the thick brush of a hammock.
That is the name given to the overgrowth in the Okefenokee.
Not at all frightened due to my ignorance,
my walk continued, and very shortly a black
cat that frequently visited me at the refuge
walked in front of me with a frightened look on
its face.
I had not walked much further toward Chesser
Island when I sighted an old Cheverolet pickup
which I recognized as the one belonging to Tom
Chesser who worked on the wildlife refuge.
Mr. Tom, as I called him, very quickly pulled
up next to me and opened the passenger side door.
"Get in with me quickly," he shouted,"There is a bear behind you, and it is stalking you."
I did not finish my walk to the island that
day but Mr. Tom did get me safely to the refuge
headquarters. And on the way home toward the
camp, Mr. Tom explained to me that black bear
can be dangerous and that there had been instances in which people had been caught and
dragged into the hammocks and eaten by black
bear.
I am still thankful for Mr. Tom for coming to my rescue that day. I also thank he and his
wife Alva for all the kindnesses shown.

Note:
Apologize to you there for breaking into
your site. During the first few days of attempts
to use my computer, I made several errors.
News of the forest fires there in your area
brought me back to there. A similar burn-up during
the 1950's amd the damage inflicted to the swamp
during that time was a shocker for me; a sixty-
eight year old.
How my comments wound-up on your middle-east
story is a mystery to me.

My e-mail address is java40@consolidated.net

Sorry......
