They're very real. Don't let some of the "other" shows throw you!

Sending out prayers to AtzLee Kilcher and the rest of the Kilcher Family. Hoping for a speedy recovery for AtzLee. You are all in my thoughts and prayers, always. If there's anything I can do, just ask.~~~CT_Homesteader~~~

Lol, well a lot and I mean a lot of the show is scripted. And I see them in town driving their really nice Volvo. Otto owns a repair shop, one of the girls works at the hospital as an RN, and so on and so forth. I saw Atz Lee at Safeway the other day. They live about 11 miles out of Homer. So it's not as homesteading as discovery makes it seem.

All these shows are really "lack of reality" shows. The Kilcher families lifestyle has changed due to the series. Regardless, I thought they were good people.

[I have watched all five series of Alaska, The Last Frontier this winter from my home in the UK and I have thoroughly enjoyed it all. What a spectacularly beautiful place the Kenai peninsula is! And I am grateful to the Kilcher family for sharing their lifestyle with us all; it couldn't have been easy at first, having cameras in their faces at every turn. It was obvious to me that after the first series, the show was put through the production 'machine' and I feel it is more the NARRATED script which is overly dramatic and, at times, makes ridiculous claims; of course the Kilcher family won't starve if they don't catch the bear they are after, etc, etc -they are better parents than to allow their children to go hungry!!- BUT, the weather, tides, terrain and predators DO obviously hold considerable risk, as was clearly the case in poor Atz Lee's accident, for one. To enjoy the show as much as I have, I simply imagine I am there with them 'in the moment' so to speak. I marvel at the geography, scenery, climate, animals domestic and wild and of course, all the family's individual and group skills, from which I have learnt much, as well as their excellent sense of humour! The Kilchers' personal lives when they are away from filming is their own business; why on earth should they live cloistered away just to prove a point? The seniors are excellent parents; they are clearly allowing the younger generation freedom to choose their careers, to travel, to use modern technology and manufactured goods OR TO MANAGE WITHOUT and so on. It would be ridiculous, even foolhardy for them not to have a reliable vehicle or outside work options or mobile/satellite phones or gain all kinds of information as we all do from the internet. I for one, would love to see a sixth series- I could watch the cattle drives and Otto's inventions and middle-aged humour all day long- and I think that production and scripting matters should be addressed as feedback to the production company. If you want the moon and the stars from the Kilchers, I think you'll find them on their outhouses, where all this character assassination surely belongs.

They are trying to depict the tough life that was once real as a homesteader. It's not that way any longer. This show has made the Kilchers a local laughingstock, because we know the truth about how they live vs how the show portrays them. And THEY laugh...all the way to the bank.

They do a lot of stupid, unnecessary stuff around the homestead from what Iíve seen on the show.

They might have lived like that at one time but no more that show has made them millions. Look it up at how much they are worth. They laugh all the way to the bank.
