Controversy remains in Patchogue after guns taken from officers

In Patchogue, the guns are gone, but the controversy is not. For 17 years, the village allowed its code enforcement officers to carry guns while they handed out tickets for violations such as unleashed dogs and ...

Now that Newsday printed an article that these guys are not armed makes them and the town a target.

Code enforcement officer has no need to carry a firearm. They have no authority to pull someone over or arrest them. This is what the Police Department does.

There is No need to even have these people service the Town.

What a waste of Tax payers money

safe in patchogue?, I would feel about as safe as the last chicken wing at all you can eat buffett, with Rosie Odonell circling the table. place is a dump, those so called officers (village clowns)are nothing more that wannabe cops, who make 7.00 per hour, could never get a real job, and walk around with that side effect that viagra gives you, you know the 4 hour side effect? where you must seek medical treatment, anyone who has gottenany ticket from one of these clown can expect a refund soon, as this will surely be a legal back down.

With all the illegal third world scum walking around Patchogue at all hours of the day and night, the mayor has made a drastic error in judgement. Code Officers have been carrying guns for many years without incident and complimented the Suffolk County Police with providing security in the town. BIG mistake. One ride down Main St and you will see what I mean.

Most of these guys are retired police officers and have been well trained with the weapons.
I think Henry Terry must be a constant violator of the village laws to have such a strong opinion. It seems he might have had a lot of interaction with them and resents their upholding the law. Does he live and work in the village?
I support them and wish them well because they do a great job.
Keep up the good work guys.

If they simply did their job...CODE ENFORCEMENT...they wouldn't need a gun, the area would be safe.
Leave the "police work" to the real men in blue.

A very big piece of information is missing from this story. Were these Patchogue code enforcement officers designated as Peace Officers in the CPL and if they were, were they granted permission to carry weapons in the CPL or did they do so under their own permits with Village permission? Just because some of them are retired cops doesn't necessarily mean they are good shots. Did the Village require DCJS approved Peace Officer training including firearms certification and yearly firearms requalification? Seems like there are lots of questions that weren't answered in this article.

You guys are hilarious. Patchogue is certainly safe. Especially considering it is a hub of activity here on eastern Long Island. I live in Springs, and go to Patchogue maybe a couple times a month. And gimme a break about the "illegals", no community on Long Island is devoid of them and in Patchogue they are not of the dangerous gang-related kind. I'm not saying I'm happy with the current state of illegal aliens on Long Island but dont blame them for all the crime. Patchogue is safe, maybe youre thinking of places like Brentwood, Central Islip or Huntington Station where 2nd generation latinos have taken over and gang crime has skyrocketed. Not in Patchogue.

It's a good thing you live in Ridge and not Patchougue. You are serviced by Brookhaven Town, and I guess you have never been involved in a serious altercation that your life or someoneelses life was in danger. Good knee jerk reaction/comment.

1. I have lived in the Village of Patchogue for over 30 years. Not once have I ever felt unsafe. And I walk alot; to town, to the parks, to the dock. For some odd reason, Patchogue seems to have a bad reputation and I don't know why. It is a great place to live. Lovely homes, nice parks and waterfront, great restaurants. I could go on. So we have a large Hispanic population. SO what. They are nice families buying homes and taking care of them. They work hard. What's wrong with that?
2. Henry Terry and his lawsuit. Great. Take them to court and cost the village hundreds of thousands of dollars. Who do you think is going to pay that. You and me and the other village residents. I personally like the constables in the village. I have called them several times late at night and they always come

It has a bad reputation because idiots from up-island know nothing about the area, dont go there, and love to live in traffic infested strip mall covered stretches of Nassau County and revel in their "wonderful" school districts. Fine by me.

Only in this Liberal Sheit Hole called New York would they take Guns away from the Police. Vote Conservative in November. This Country was founded to bring Mankind relief from Government Tyranny and now the Liberals are swarming like the Virus they are to destroy everything that our Founding Fathers sacrificed everything for. The only good Liberal is a dead one.

As long as these officers are properly trained to use a weapon I don't see the problem with them carrying one. That is a pretty dangerous area.

Perhaps they could compromise and the village code officers could carry guns, but they would need to be equipped with trigger locks, carried unloaded, and the ammunition would need to be locked at the station, with only one key.
