The saying used to be "Watch were you are walking"..... Now we have to tell people to "Watch the Gap"
In Rome they have cobblestone streets - do you think they put up signs that say "Watch the cobblestones"??? You know someone could break a leg!
Why don't people pay attention anymore?
Personally I think they all need a clue-by-four to the head.

The LIRR should sue her for being a moron. Why can thousands of people communicate from their brains to their feets to watch the gap and one or two people can't? She cost thousands of people time they can't get back. She should be punished, forced to watch home movies of George W. Bush with the Olsen Twins. If that fails she should be dropped in a bigger gap.

This woman slipped into a Gap store at the the kew gardens lirr station? I didn't know there was a Gap store entrance on the platform; kind of a weird place for a Gap store if you ask me. Was the woman planning to shop or something before she fell?

I ride the train every day...by this point if you don't know about the gap and you fall, you deserve it. Either that or she tried to get hurt to make some money. Either way, she's a DUNCE!

its always the victims fault, always. stop blaming people for things that happen and realize that ACCIDENTS DO HAPPEN. its just a way of life.

Of all the trains I have taken only the LIRR has a gap that is wide enough where an actual human can fall between the car and the platform. This is just one of the many problems of the LIRR where attention to detail doesn't matter. The gap problem occurred when the platforms were refurbished during the 90's and the LIRR engineers decided that wider trains that were never bought were to be used on the system. Stop blaming the victims, the gap is the result of poor engineering and a bad bureaucracy.

If they sent her to Jamaica Hospital she will be lucky if you leave there alive. You think the gap is bad, you should see the staff there.

I rode the LIRR and subways for over 29 years. I learned to look down as I was boarding the train to make sure I didn't misstep. Even when I was being herded onto the train by the crowd on the platform, I looked down to make sure I clearly stepped onto the train. There has to be some gap, the trains can't ride up against the platforms. Some of the gaps are unneccessarily too wide and need to be narrowed - Hey, I'm not a huge fan of the LIRR, but there is no winning from a PR point of view - no matter what they do.

The LIRR gaps are really dangerousely wide on some platforms, especially on the westbound platform of Kew Gardens station. It makes me very nervous every time I have to step over it. The gap is large enough for a child to fall through. I am disturbed by some of the nasty comments here about the injured woman, especially because the woman is my mother. She rides the LIRR everyday to and from work for 16 years already. She suffered a very serious injury and spent quite a while in the hospital getting the wound treated. It will take some time and further treatment before she recovers. I would like to thank all the wonderful caring passengers who assisted my mother as this happened. LIRR needs to fix those dangerous gaps asap, there are too many incidents like this happening.

At many Amtrak stations there aren't even platforms. People climb down unstable steps that are pulled up when the train arrives. But i want to know how many people fall on sidewalks by tripping over Newsday bundles left outside before stores open. Or how many Newsday carriers are injured while delivering newspapers in unlit yards pre-dawn.
