WOW!! I don't even know what to believe!! I was a student there from '87 -'90, and I have to say, we did do some crazy sh*t, but nothing even near what some people claim is going on there now. I had my share of fights with other students, AWOLS's, sneaking out to 7-11 at nights, but we never broke into houses or harrassed the community.

Even when I snuck out for beer runs & got hammered, my friends & I NEVER messed with the surrounding neighborhood - being in Lake Grove School was punishment enough for our behavior, we didn't want to go to jail as well!! We always kept to our own little cliques, and either caught a bus home from the mall, or just went back to the school after a couple of hours of running around.

Back in the late 80's, the school definitely had some problems with it (as you can tell from my first paragraph), but the staff didn't abuse kids or treat them like animals. We just didn't want to listen & behave - we all wanted to do our own thing and rebel against the program. But for the ones that did follow the structure that was offered (which eventually I did), the school was a great asset. There actually were a lot of staff/teachers that did the right thing by the kids, and cared enough about them to help them get thier lives straight.

For me personally, this placed helped me get a diploma (I was accepted back at my public school, once I showed consistent behavioral improvment, & recieved my diploma in '91). I also learned valuable skills while there (wood working, residential construction, basic electronics, guitar) that led to some of my career choices as an adult. Not all of us students were criminals & hoodlums. The program does work for the majority of kids there.

Anyway, I'm only speaking from my personal experiences; I'm not talking for anyone else but myself. I have no idea how things are there now, but this is how it was back then, and I'm grateful for it. It saved my life in my opinion, because many of my HS friends didn't turn out so lucky - I've been to too many funerals.

Thank you for letting speak my mind here, I appreciate it.

Well, i hope you have a rather large fence, many of the students at lake grove read this forum and contribute. You just called for yourself and your neighbors to have their homes vandalized.

Dan:
I was there with you from like 6/88-3/89. We were in the same dorm together and you're my Myspace friend.
Coincidentally, I'm also from Franklin Square, like the other kid who posted in this thread, although, obviously twice his/her age.
Here is what I remember:
The population was indeed diverse. I'd say it was split evenly between city kids and Nassau/Suffolk kids. One of the four dormitories was for deaf boys.
Like someone alluded to earlier, for most, it was a last stop before jail/juvenile detention. Most of the kids there, like me, were taken out of their school district by P.I.N.S. petition, or, were sent there as a conditional release from the courts in lieu of probation.
Some of the students did indeed engage in criminal activity in the community as some of the posters here have described. I was one of them. I constantly ran away from there and loitered at the Smithhaven Mall. I also followed the lead of some older kids like and squatted in what we referred to as "abandoned houses", but, were really houses that were used seasonally or were for sale at the time, but uninhabited. I can remember at least two occasions when I stayed in one, and, some hobos used them, as well. One of those houses indeed did end up burning down (not my doing).
I was actually one of the worst kids there and was the only one I know of who was thrown out of there, which rarely, if ever happens.
With that being said, the school, because it only services like 75 kids, was run very well, I thought. Sure, the buildings are a bit antiquated and the system of trailers used as classrooms back then was really cheesy, but, as someone else pointed out, they had a dedicated, caring staff.
Most of the kids, when I was there, were troubled, but, were serviceable and not beyond help. It was just me and 8 or 9 other rotten bastards that needed a good beating and a few months in juvie to calm down.
This is 21 years ago, though. I don't know if things have changed, although, I doubt they have much. Lake Grove wasn't a gilded wonderland or anything, but, it wasn't such a bad place, either.

I do because I used to work there! The public schools "can't" deal with them because they belong in jail! These kids don't respond to any program in the public system. That's what got them kicked out in the first place. Some of them have assaulted teachers, other citizens, robbed stores and houses, sexually assaulted their own siblings...among other things to get them to that school in the first place. Sometimes the police would bring them in handcuffs, unlock them and hand us their duffel bag and drive off. These are not poor, misunderstood kids. A lot of them used to come from the NYC school system and not Long Island. Maybe that has changed now with some of the other changes they have made. But, they would go AWOL, break into houses, shoplift at the mall which is on the corner, and wreak havoc. The neighbors are right! I was glad I didn't live near there! They have been talking about moving the school for years, but like the other writer mentioned, who would want them? The other towns all fight it. One thing I can say, though, is that the staff work hard and have to deal with a lot and are not properly compensated for it!! That is a dedicated staff!!

I don't know about how the school is now but I was a student there from 86-89 and as Dan said yeah we did some pretty crazy shit but we never trashed anything or messed with the neighbors,we never robbed any stores etc.
When I was there a majority of the students weren't even from NYC or LI most were from upstate NY and a lot weren't even from NY. The staff were never abusive nor were they abused and as far as I know no one was there avoiding jail or lockup just a bunch of kids everyone gave up on, I got a lot out of my stay there I CHOSE to stay to graduate after I turned 18, I learned a lot from the staff there and that was the first time in my life anyone ever gave a damn about me that was 20 years ago not sure how the school is now but it wasn't bad back when I was there

I too have worked at this school. This place is not set up to rehabilitate or help anyone. Staff are just there to babysit these kids. This is a very corrupt and dangerous environment. Staff is underpaid and untrained. Some staff have provided these children with cigarettes , drugs , alcohol , etc. Some Staff have been involved in sexual relations with these kids.Staff have been seriously hurt and have had their cars damaged on school property. These kids do go AWOL and terrorize the community. They have shoplifted from Stop N Shop , and beat up someone at Applebees. The cops have some to the school and dragged kids off in handcuffs. The fire dept has been there many many times for kids starting fires with basic things like powder which they are not allowed to have. Anyone wonder why? Staff has had to go on many trips to Stony Brook Hospital for these kids to be evaluated in the psych ward. There were kids who would use anything and everything to try and take it apart and make some kind of a bomb out of it and administration was aware of this and did nothing about it. Some of these kids are very deranged and some staff members would show them the most inappropriate R rated gory bloody horror movies. They mix 11 year old children with 18-20 year olds.Besides the low pay staff are expected to work a 16 hour shift on weekends from 8 am to Midnight and many times without a break. The school does not teach these children anything. Their education level is atrocious and borders on illiteracy. One of the current administrators is from the band Cameo. Google Cameo and you will find the initials A.L. Since when is somebody that was known for a one hit wonder qualified to take care of juvenile delinquent children ?

I attended The Lake Grove School more than 30 years ago and the population has remained the same. I question your knowledge of the school and why you purchased your property knowing of the schools location. Your comments are a disgraceful.

Maybe that is what they are technically listed as "quote unquote"...try living with them in your backyard Huntington. There have been numerous breakins, assaults, rapes...in fact just last month someone was raped on the "campus". In addition to the "problem" kids, there is also a methadone clinic housed right next to million dollar homes. In fact it is so bad that when my son went there for drivers ed and walked over (a few blocks from my house) the counselors warned the kids not to ever walk around the grounds or walk to the building that the classroom was housed. It was very dangerous they said...the "kids" have free roam on the grounds and are very dangerous. Nice, and this is a few blocks from my house. But not in Huntington huh....

You obviously broke rule no.#1 when you purchased your home...check out the neighborhood!!! Lake Grove School has been around since the 1930's and a school for special needs since 1979. I would bet you puchased your home after that. What were you thinking? Maybe you got a break on the price because you were right behind a school for troubled kids, just like you used the school for drivers education to save a few cents. I think you're the one with problems and the LOSER!!!
And the sign in front of it said SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF. That is what it said in bold engraved letters in a very large sign. I didn't realize until I had driven past the school a few times and saw the kids crossing Moriches to the old gym...and not a single one was signing........What was the sign for? Beautification??

I worked there as a counselor form 94- 97, in that time frame. There were several things that stand out in my mind during a tenture there. there was a counselor there that sexually abused young boys, Yes, you read right!!!This man told me the things to look out for, then one evening in Riverhead Dorm, I observed this man in one of the boys room.He came out carrying vaseline. I trhought this very odd, and then observed him closely thereafter. Did I mention he was employed there for ten years and worked the overnight.
Well, I Reported my observations to the supervisor. He did do a investigation, but no one was talkin. So after that I was given a very hard time by administration. We did find out from a letter sent by one one the boys that went home. The man had a sexual relationship with him dor the three years he was there, well until a younger man came in.... he liked blue eye, blond boys. He was fired after working there for ten years. How amny kids did he abuse????? We will never know, will we???
Then there was an incident when a 12 year old boy was raped by these two sexual offenders, because there was no room for them in Conn, where they have another school for sexual offenders...So they kept them at Lake Grove, and well they had there way with a little 12 year old boy, for weeks.... until it was discovered. The boy left for several weeks, then the parents sent him back....
I thereafter resigned my position, because I just could not continue to work there, it is a horror show...
these kids need help, this school is not the place. They will get abused by there peers, and yes, the counselors. mOST OF THE COUNSELORS ARE WONDERFUL, BUT SOME ARE NOT. get rid of this hole!!!!!!!!!!
I must say I will never forget the kids that I tried to help, I hope god walks with them. Shout out to Melissa, Corinna, Valerie, keisha, to name a few,,,, I will remember you guys for the rest of my life, with love!

I rest my case. I would not be proud of the fact, you attended Lake Grove School. It can be determined that you had problems. It is still apparent that you have issues considering your limited vocabulary and lack of appropriate verbal written skills. So you graduated, huh???? When you write to make a point make sure you can represent your school with dignity, not adversive comments.I hope your life has brought you a gift of love, peace amd happiness.
