That's it people, keep following too closely to the vehicle in front of you because they're not speeding fast enough for you. After all you morons kill one another the rest of us will have nice safe roadways to travel on.

Since the Sheriffs took over its only been chaos on the highways. "Officials on the scene", must have been talking about the ambulance crew. Thats the only officials on the scene. Wonder if anymore Sheriffs or CO's raped any other inmates?

No - you are wrong- if you are out there every day, it has changed. The Sherrif is doing a great job but does not have enough of a presence to get people to drive nice. The SCPD did, and now people drive crazier. This morning for the first time I sawa State Trooper had someone in the HOV lane.
Slow down please

No respect on the roads these days !! You take your life in your hands everyday out their !!
70 mph isn't fast enough i guess ? Being that is what most law enforcment officers will let you do without pulling you over !
Not to mention the texting and cell phone use at the same time !!

Got it in for the sheriff's of suffolk county, why? Been a 'Guest' of their 'overnight facilities' lately ?

The LIE was soooo much safer with the more expensive SCPD cops because nobody dared to speed, and everybody obeyed the speed limit, right ? Those two 100 grand a year cops swapping stories while parked on the center median sure deterred all the cars they were ignoring. Yep, we sure need more of that.

It is time to PRIVATIZE the traffic law enforcement, use cameras, and electronic means, mail out the tickets, and finally slow the madness on Long Island highways. When the limit is 55 and the traffic is all moving at 75, and the only ones getting tickets are those weaving at 90 it is time to declare the entire system Motorized Madness, and opt for Plan B.

If I am doing 70 in the HOV lane and you tailgate me (less than 1 - 2 car lengths is tailgating at 70), I will Slow Down and keep slowing down until you either drive properly, at a safe following distance, or get out from in back of me.

If you had actually learned how to drive, I wouldn't have to do this.

Nothing to do with this story, except that beaners were involved.
I have to give SCPD much props for letting the beaners and watermelons beat the shat out of one another at BHS the other day.
It was great seeing the cops just let em go at it for awhile. Too bad none of em died.
Good job!!!!!

I travel the LIE beginning to end of suffolk every day and maybe it's just perception, but I see a lot more Sheriff's patrol cars driving on the highway than I did SCPD.
I always knew where SCPD would position themselves along the highway and would adjust my speed based on that. Pretty much evry day they were in the same spots, except when the tix blitz would occur.

As for the safety issue....it's the same as it was before...no better, no worse. Bad drivers were doing the same things when SCPD patrolled as they're doing now with the sheriffs.

I understand what you're trying to accomplish but the problem is the morons tailgating you decide to cut over into the main highway without looking or signaling, endangering others.

Happened right in front of me. Traffic was moving moderately but it was very congested.

If one of the vans involved is the one I saw cutting in and out of traffic lanes, he/she might have tried to overtake a lane (no signals of course) at the same time the other van was attempting to take the same lane and they came together.

All I saw was smoke and debris - one van was turned sideways with the other into it's side (driver's side). They both started across from left to right, across all three lanes then the direction shifted. The van that was into the side of the other spun counter-clockwise then reversed HARD into the wall, exploding the entire back of the van, splitting it wide open while the other van, the one that was turned sideways, gained forward momentum and also slammed hard, nose-first into the wall.

As they both started heading toward the wall, the lanes opened up - naturally everyone was slowing down to let them have at it but once the lanes opened, clearing the way for the drivers following, myself included, we continued through, avoiding contact. It was at that point I could hear each impact - SMACK - the first van backwards into the wall - then SMACK - the second van head-on into the wall. Those impacts sounded nasty!

On the way back heading West, I saw the van that went head-on into the wall had the entire side door, including the main support beam cut off - the entire side of the van was cut open to get the victims out.

What a mess!

But he'll not end up in my back seat because he was tailgating me and text messaging.

I understand we don't have the normal 10 or 12 SCPD cops 'hangin' in Stony Brook Hospital Emergency Room smoking and joking the way we did before the Sheriff's took over. That has to be good for the ol'tax bill. I always wondered why it took so many for one 'suspect' getting a few stitches, then one of them told me. They were all on Overtime ! Then it made sense.
