I was Vinny's neighbor and cannot stress enough what a good husband, Father and friend he was. That drunk driver deserves whatever he gets and then some. My prayers are with him and his family. Rest in peace Vinny!

Vinny worked in the school I teach in, and when I heard the news this morning that Vinny had passed away I was in shock. I had just seen and talked to Vinny yesterday, and I couldn't believe that his life had been taken so tragically. Whenever Vinny was around he had a smile on his face and he would be the first to help you if you needed anything. To know that he died as a result of someone's careless behavior makes me sick to my stomach. Mr. Spinelli took from this Earth a loving husband and father, a great coworker and dear friend. I have to say that it will be extremely difficult for me to walk into the gym of the school, where I usually saw him, and not see him there. To Vinny's family, I am so sorry that he was taken from you too soon. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers, and Vinny will forever be remembered by his friends at Bellport High School.

I passed the scene this morning on my way to work. 50 is way TOO young to die! Someone said when are they going to wake up (the prosecutors), I second that...whose going to be next? Get the drunks off the NY roads!

Hit the guy with the harshest sentence possible and let's start working on enacting tougher laws against this irresponsible, criminal behavior. This has got to be dealt with because we have a crisis on our hands with this thing. Too many times during the week we keep reading of these idiots drinking and driving. They tear up people's lives and do not seem to fear the consequences. We have elected officials who are sitting on their hands regarding this situation, let's get with it and do something!!!
the laws wont stop drunk driving. i wish they would but they wont. people thought years ago, that if people are faced with teh seizure of their vehicles it would make people think twice. it hasnt. all it does it make it a hassle for the lienholder to repossess the car. people arent thinking when they get behind the wheel. if they are they're thinking they ok. perhaps we need to install passive breathalizers in car that require you blow before you start the car. then again what stops your friend from blowing for you so you can drive. it's an andless fight that seems to be gettin worse and worse. it's like i said earlier about themanorville man slaying his wife with a machete...the regard for human life amongst people nowadays is diminishing at a scary rate.

I feel awful for the victim's family and friends. Drunk driving is a selfish and completely avoidable act, and even if the perpetrator wasn't drunk, driving like an a$$hole is just as bad. Not only did someone have to lose their life, but if the cars were just a bit closer, I would have lost my house.

I wonder if the driver was at the Dunton Inn on South Country Road and Dunton Ave. Perhaps the police/detectives should find out where Mr. Spinelli was before the accident. If these bartenders were also held responsible then perhaps this might prevent this happening again to someone else. These bartenders make good good tips serving these big drinkers. There is more blame then just the driver.

I agree!!! You bring up a very valid point, but I am sure the polic won't put any blame on the bar he was it, if he was at a bar.

I say throw the book at anyone who causes a fatal accident regardless if they are drunk or not. That goes for you MP3 toting, cell phone carrying, make up wearing, coffee drinking fools as well.

We in the great County of Suffolk need much more SCPD Highway Patrol and COPE road checks. Not only for DWI/ DUI fools, but also for the speed racers, light and sign runners. It seems that there are no cops around to give us our tax dollars worth. Hell, get help from the Sheriffs department. Their cars are home at night.

i say B.S. people are responsible for their own actions. that's the problem with the country lately, people holding everyone else to blame except themselves.....

I've lived on South Country for almost 4 years now and it is an extremely dangerous road. There are no stop signs or stop lights for nearly 2 miles, people fly down the road whether it is 12am or 12pm....Don't think just because there's no cops around that you can all of a sudden make up your own rules of the road. There have been so many accidents on South Country, espeically on our corner, but never, not even in my wildest dreams did I think I'd come home to find 2 cars totalled on my front lawn...my deepest sympathies to the families because they both lost something last night. Why is it that the people who don't drink and drive always seem to die.....

If it is of any comfort, Mr Spinelli did not walk away from this accident. He is in serious condition in the hospital. If he lives he will go to jail. He was intoxicated.

Make driving drunk ILLEGAL period...
Make all drivers aware of the consequences and stick to it.Not special treatment to ex DA's and cops. Are they above the law to get special treatment.A life lost is a life lost. Not anyone of us know what the Good Lord has in store for us.
If you make it illegal then everyone will get the fair sentence.
Repeat offenders should have their licenses taken away.
What good is life in prison or up to 15 years WHAT THE H... does that prove! Over crowd our already stressed system. I agree let them spent some time in jail and report on weekends possibly and yes community service at the morgue and schools would get the word out fast!

When the hell is this going to end? You can open this paper & find a DWI accident most every day. Nassau & Suffolk prosecutors you need to wake up & wake up fast
Answer: It is NEVER going to end but laws will get somewhat stiffer. I just want to know why some are charged with DWI while others are charged with Vehicular Homicide/Manslaughter...anyone have the answer to that? Just curious.
