Sympathies to the family and the residents but please don't let Newsday exploit this aweful time in your lives. After following a weeks worth of stories, has this papaer offered to help any of these people in any way other than printing opinions to put fuel on an already heated topic? Newsday is making money on these peoples misery. Shame on Newsday!!!

Low hydrant pressure? That may well be, but fire engines should have enough water aboard to knock down most residential fires without the need for a hydrant. They generally carry 1,000 to 2,000 gallons of water. That goes a long way when making a push into a building to rescue a victim. Where there is smoke there is fire. What was the response time? How well did the 1st crew do their jobs? The volunteer fire service is a highly variable animal. Who you get depends on who is available. Some are great other not so great. How do you think the victims family will feel when they pay their next fire district tax bill? If the alarms were not working properly - when was the last time the Fire Marshals were there? Has anyone FOILED those records? Were there any violations found? Were they corrected? I smell smoke.

You are absolutely correct. The problem here is that Newsday is exploiting these families with many untruths. This paper is unresponsibly reporting what the writer has compiled and changed to sell a paper. Is hydrant pressure an issue that needs attention? Certainly! However, we as the readers should be demanding the facts. For instance, where did Ms. Eden Laikin get the run times she printed? If you took notice she never revealed the source of this information and the sorce she quoted has nothing to do with the recording of such run time entries. It is with little doubt that you would want the same. Responsible journalism minus the novelistic approach.
