Edisto is one of the last places that is left and we need to save it. Developers are hovering to swoop down and grab everything that is not being protected.
The Greenwood, SC "mafia" has a strong presence at Edisto and has to be watched constantly. We need someone like Ted Turner to help us out to keep Edisto the regional preservation/conservation institution that it is for our future generations.

If you want to keep Edisto one of the last true un-developed areas....start by tearing your house down and moving....

Good for you -- except Ted Turner wouldn't want to getinvolved with Edisto Beach unless he could tear everything down and make it look like St. Phillips Is., which he saved before it could be ruined by the likes of the Hornsbys and Hoys.

When we first started going to Edisto for our annual vacations MANY years ago, it was so-o-o beautiful and peaceful. It has still maintained much of its natural beauty and affordability for the average family. I would hate to think what would happen if Edisto was allowed to be developed any more. Where would poeple who truly enjoy the Beach, go? If I wanted commercialism and tourism I would save money and just stay home. Please keep it as natural as possible.

Why would anyone feel any different than Beach Lover from Augusta, GA (above)? Well there are many I call Rednecks who would like to change things, elect different people to the local government, and pepper all the different committees with their own. Soon we will be another Hilton Head or Naples. Can you imagine what a new pier will do for our community. There is no parking now. You say we need a parking garage. There you go sounding just like one of them. It is sad, but it is happening right before our eyes. All they need to do is elect a few more of their people and the ordinances will be changed to raise the height limits and density limits. Don't say this won't happen...our local people mean well but they are asleep, blaming our current long term public servants with petty problems. There are two people..Susan Hornsby and Pete Anderson who are newly elected leading the charge, very activity meeting with store owners and others trying to convince them we need change. Behind them are the Greenwood Mafia...the Vaughns, Funderburkes, and a few others who are developers who supported their campaigns. Follow the money!
Even the current Mayor has been known to fold under this type of pressure. Folks, it is up to us to protect Edisto Beach and Island for our grandchildren. Be prepared to fight for it.

It amazes me how some people think. It is public knowledge that the Hoys (Pavilion owners) are trying to cut a deal with Mr. Redfern and Piggly Wiggly to lease parking spaces from Piggly Wiggly but they have not mentioned the fact that as soon as this gets done Piggly is going to apply to expand. This will mean again NO PARKING. Go to the piggly wiggly now and see there is already parking issues. They don't need to lease to the pavilion, let those boys go. They are trouble. Check into their past, all are on probation for money laundering and no telling what else they are guilty of.

As a very frequent visitor since 1984 and future homeowner I can appreciate both arguments for development and non-development. I can't wait until I open my Mexican Restaurant on Docksite - that ought to really get some activity on this blog. See you next summer

I have roots on Edisto Island and my grandfather used to live there many years ago. I remember when I was young, we had a family reunion there on Edisto beach. The beach is a nice area! I would like to more about this debate of development vs. non-development. I think that historical landmarks and history should be preserved. Making profits is not all that important. The profits should be channeled in the right direction! There are many hurting people out there and families that need assistance. I am a firm believer in the truths of God's word concerning true prosperity!

We had a pier before, actually we've had two of them. So tell me again how that makes this place into a Myrtle Beach. It didn't blow up with commericalization before, why do you think it would now? You folks from Ohio, or is FUPFO's always want to be the last ones to move to Edisto Beach. Do us all a favor, move back up north.

I have been coming to Edisto for 20 years. It's a long drive, but well worth the trip. As a rentor, I realize that my opinion doesn't mean as much as that of a local. I would like to say that there is a reason I bring my family to Edisto. It is quiet. I feel safe letting my kids run along the beach because it is never over-crowded. It is also very beautiful. Over the yearsm I have seen more development of homes, but the development has been respectful of the surroundings. It would be a shame to allow commercialization take over. Luckily, the State Park will keep large expansion away from the beach. PLease keep things as they are.
