Developers are after the property that the Starting Place, Jubilee Soup Kitchen, and other facilities are on. Watch it all close down and Furr, Gottlieb, and Koslow step in with a plan to build offices or condos. Show me the money.. dahling!

I think you have to admit you have a drug problem to the judge and then agree to go for treatment. You also need to stay clean as they can randomlt test you during a certain time. You may also have to take a job skills course if you are unemployed.

Good. Let all of the above close down and the trouble they attract can go somewhere else. The neighborhood has had enough of Hollywood sending every lowlife to this area.

My child has been a resident at the Starting Place since Oct 07. She was scheduled to graduate next Wednesday..........this program helped to save my child's life....and I will be forever grateful. The therapists, counselors and staff were professional, caring. They went above and beyond to help my child. I was involved in group and family therapy sessions. I have nothing but appreciation for the staff of the Starting Place. After months of trying to find a recommended residential treatment program for my child, the Starting Place was the my choice.
They addressed all aspects of my childs mental health, behavior and wellbeing. It was a tough road...I feel very sad that the Starting Place will not be available for our community.
They saved my child's life. To all the staff of the Starting Place, thank you, and God Bless.

you have no idea of the scope of the closure of The Starting Place. Many of the residents are court-ordered, so perhaps will be returned to Juvi. Nice option, huh?....or back on the streets, or worse. God help you.

I consider children that need help a precious potential resource, not "low lifes". You are deluding yourself to think this brought your property values down. and your answer, put "them" somewhere else. Ignorant.

It should be noted that the starting place provided many clients with excellent service. It is important for it to be understood that less than a handful of employees were involved in the alleged acts that endangered the clients. The majority of the employees treated the clients as well as they would treat their own children. The services provided to the clients meant the diference between jail and homelessness. Most of the parents and guardians would give favorable feedback if given the opportunity. For those employees who went above and beyond the call of duty you are to be commended for your tireless acts of mentoring. For those who would do the unthinkable and take advantage of clients that you were well aware were coming to you in a diminished capacity may God have mercy on your souls, and may you end up in a place where you will never be able to harm another child.

I agree with you, these kids are in need of help and the Starting Place has been one of the few places who are able to do this important work.
These kids need help, not judgement.

It is our hope that your daughter will some day become a great musician and be very successful in her life. She is well on her way and our prayers go with both of you. Thank you for your comments they helped during our time of chaos and disbelief.

The Starting Place helped my child begin her recovery, albeit some problems. The Starting Place fulfills an important role in saving our children from jail, death, and addiction. Most of the staff is dedicated, hard working, and professional. The professionally trained and degreed counselors and psychologists have the best interests of the children at heart. The abuse problems arose with a few afterhours caretakers who had control over the youths with little or no professional oversight. This was a result of inadequate funding and poor management. This a correctable situation. There are so many things that could be done to improve the program with adequate funding to provide proper administration and oversight. Such problems would be avoided with proper management. The solution is not closing the center which leaves Broward County without any residential treatment facility for teenage girls at risk. Closing down the Starting Place only exacerbates the addiction problems and threatens the safety of these children at risk. This certainly will not contribute to the welfare of the community.

I dont know much about Starting Place but if it was anything like UBC it should not get shut down the staff are only there to help but what i am hearing so far there is not a thing wrong with it it was only one incident when a staff had sex with a minor but that never happen at UBC so they should try to work it out and see what tomorrow will bring

The Starting Place helped my son as well. He is now in college and has been on the Dean's list since he has started. There are very limited resources in South Florida to help families with teenagers that have substance abuse problems.

These facilities for teens are horrible.

My daughters got pregnant while at the Covenant House.

The counselors have sex with the teens in exchange for drugs and other favors.

The DCF became a brothel for delinquents and drug abusers under Gov. Bush's stewardship.

The Bush crime syndicate is fully responsible for these and many other atrocities.

I feel that the city put the homeless shelter, soup kitchen, people fighting addictions, and other problems in one area causing the neighborhood to go down. They should have those spread places around all over and it would have caused fewer problems for the neighborhood, law enforcement and even some of the people who are trying to get help.

I know all too well the scope of the problems presented with the closure of a mental health facility.
I have had close friends who either got heavily involved with drugs , even one who developed schizophrenia when we were adolescents .
Thanks.
