QUESTION

#1 Dec 8, 2007
I don't have a problem with spanish speaking people working there but if I stop one of their employees in the aisle and ask a question and I get told in Spanish that they don't speak English sorry that's another thing. I asked the manager of that Publix if he was going to start hiring non English speaking employees because there are Spanish grocery stores nearby where they don't speak English and I was just curious. And I did not reveal who the employee was to him so as not to get her fired.

Well don't you know he told every Spanish person at that store what I asked him and identified me to all of them and when I went shopping today I got heckled and pointed at by almost each and every one of them. Except for the older more mature Spanish people who were smart enough not to act like jerks.

So my question is: Do I write a letter to Publix Corporate Headquarters and let them know what their manager has done or do I contact the local media and let them do an expose on the manager and his store?

Oh and I spend a good $1000 a month at that store too. Guess I'll be shopping at Albertsons

Well I heard back from several of my neighbors who I emailed about this incident and they all told me they no longer shop at that Publix they shop at at the Super Target where ALL the employees will speak English.

I cannot believe those Publix employees were stupid enough to make an English only customer feel uncomfortable shopping there and even worse the manager pointed that customer out so that customer could get mobbed by his employees when this neighborhood is mostly English speaking.

I will spread this information like wildfire. Does this manager think this will be an isolated case? He needs to think again.

All I asked him was is he going to be hiring more non English speaking employees because I asked someone stocking a shelf where something was and she said no speaky engly and I had just come from the local spanish market just around the corner Food Towne where most of them don't speak English and I was frustrated and walked out. I did not identify her to him yet he pointed me out to all his employees. Even if he pointed me out to only one they told everyone else and let me tell you that is the most unprofessional thing a manager can do. Especially to someone who has shopped at that Publix for the past 20 years and knows everyone in the area.

Times are tough and there is a Super Target right up the street, 2 Publixes within driving distance and an Albertsons up the road as well.

This is not how you treat Americans who are spending money in your store. If he had said NOTHING the problem probably would have never come up again. Instead he caused a problem.

And like I said some of my neighbors are already solely shopping at Super Target for their groceries because of this issue and I was not even aware anyone else had the same issue.

So they can "mob" all the Americans right out of their store. There are other places to shop.

There are not enough Spanish people in the area to keep that grocery in business especially when there are Spanish only grocery stores in the area. Unless their business now consists of illegals so they don't really care about their legal English speaking customers. I'm really trying hard to make sense of this. The only thing I can come up with is they must have enough illegals spending cash in their store to care about those of us who are dropping big money each week in their store.

Publix might as well do their commercials in Spanish if this is the mindset of their managers.

I would like to add that there are some very smart, mature and friendly Spanish speaking cashiers that did not get involved in this nor even gave me one clue that they knew who I was and ignored what was happening and were as friendly as ever. There were also some working in the store that ignored their stupid friends and were doing their jobs and did not get involved.

That manager should have never pointed out a customer especially when the customer was not making a formal complaint to employees that obviously do not know how to handle themselves and have no stock in how good business is at his store. Doesn't the manager get a percentage. You'd think he'd be smart enough to make sure it does not go down. Not even by one customer.

Why would Publix employees want to create ethnic tension. I don't even care if they speak Spanish among themselves.

Are Americans welcome at the Davie Publix. Because of all those that emailed me back they said they never went to the manager they just started shopping somewhere else?

This is how Publix managers and employees deal with culture shock????
QUESTION

I wonder if Publix has even trained their managers on how to handle these issues. Certainly I would think they wouldn't train their managers to make sure every Spanish person know a customer said something about not being able to be helped because an employee didn't speak english so they could either mob the customer or make the customer feel unwelcome in their store.

I blame Publix Corporate period. They are not training their managers properly and are not holding their employees accountable for their actions towards customers.

This entire scenario is disgraceful. And to think I was even considering taking a Spanish course. The heck with them. If this is how they behave I would not want to embrace any of their culture.

Technically I don't know what this manager told his employees but I am 100% certain he told them who I was and what was said. Now why would a manager trust his employees with that information???? Why is it important who I was? It doesn't even matter who asked him that question. It matters how he handles the information given him. Is he a leader of a gang or a manager with underlings? If he told only one person at that store who I was he should be calling that person on the carpet for spreading it throughout the store.
QUESTION

Do you think I will feel comfortable ordering a cake there now? NO

Do you think I will feel comfortable having someone repackage something for me? NO

Do you think I'll ever order my Turkey there again? NO

Do you think I'll want to even park my car in that parking lot while I shop in the store? NO

Do you think I'm going to tell every American friend and neighbor I have about what happened? YOU BET!

Oh I'd like to add that some of the English speaking employees chimed in and instigated and played along with the Spanish ones. It was an incredible display of solidarity over a stupid question I asked the manager. There was no need for them to band together against a customer. And there was no need to them to know what customer had even asked the manager the question. There was no need for them to even let on they knew about it. That manager should not have trusted anyone that works for him with that information. These are stock clerks for Gods sake do you think they will use this information wisely or lash out over it and take it personal.

I will not be moving away from my home. But I will be informing everyone I know about this incident.

Thank you for the information. However, I've already been to the publix website and inquired as to how managers are supposed to handle situations like these and if they are supposed to inform the employees who the person is who asked about it.

Next step. Contact the board of directors. That ought to get some attention from the shareholders.

No way. No how. Everyone I know just avoids the stores whose employees behave this way. And I also found out after emailing all of my neighbors and friends that many of them are having a problem with that publix and now shop at the Super Target down the street or the other two Publix nearby or Albertsons. If it happens there they'll just shop somewhere else and so will I.

Nothing would have even come of this if those employees hadn't acted like thugs. If we had been in the alley behind the Publix I wouldn't have even felt safe.

And by the manager asking me who told me they did not speak English when I asked in an aisle where something was tells me there are more than one.

And I would not even be pissed off if the rest of the employees didn't take it upon themselves to show me I was no longer welcome in that store.

My friends and neighbors are all in agreement with me. You want solidarity. I'll give it to you.
