Fountain Ferry. Then it was Ghost Town on the river, then River Glen Park I think. My grandpa used to work at Fountain Ferry and I remember we used to get in with Pepsi bottle tops. The old rollercoaster stood for years after the park closed but they eventually tore it down. I also remember Dude Ranch down there and the old skating rink. There was an ice cream place we used to go to across from the amusement park too. It's a shame they couldn't keep the hoodlums from tearing the place apart or setting it on fire. Oh the memories you've brought back with this one.

1 Even though no one in Louisville or Kentucky had anything to do with Martin Luther King's death,[in fact The Southern baptist Theological Seminary offered Dr King a tenured teaching position back when the Roman Catholic churches in the area wouldn't even discuss him] the african american's in Louisville burned the park down, destroyed it and caused all profitable businesses to distance themselves as far as possible away from this element of Louisville's population. Sigh, Fountaine ferry provided employment, joy and a sense of community to the west End of Louisville. And these people call anglo-saxon people "prejudiced!" |

speaking of ehrlers ,one memory i can remember was getting up at the crack of dawn and going outside with the morning fog still in the air and looking down and seeing the erhlers milk that was delivered by the front door in those glass bottles with the orange cow on the bottles. the big thing was getting outside with your friends as early as you could and staying gone ,playing in the woods or building the latest chopper bicycle with as many forks stacked up as you could. nowdays you cant pry kids out of the house with a crowbar , but back then you got out and stayed out ,you didnt want to be anywhere near home . |

I remember the milk man!! Did you have the milk in the brown glass bottles? Yuck! I think vitamins were added. How about the Donaldson(?) man. Delivered cakes, cookies, breads. How about Mr. Softie, the ice cream truck.
I try to get my grandchildren to watch old tv shows, Leave It To Beaver, Andy Griffith and others on cable, they just laugh at me. Oh for the good times! |

I forgot about the milk man im 45 and remember him delivering milk then there was the drive thru where you took empty bottles and got new ones at too...I am thankful the my grandkids love the outdoors they love the woods and parks more than video games or tv. |

My fondest memories were at the firehouses my dad was a fireman so we spent many holidays eating there i LOVED hanging out with all the firemen and playing around the firehouses in downtown louisville..I was in awe of it all. They would let us do anything we wanted around there.. I was there a couple of times when the bell rang and they would all drop everything and take off .That was exiting and made me feel they were so important.

1 drinking water from a garden hose not a bottle, fear of your parents when you got home from school for what you shouldnt have done at school...mom cooking dinner and the whole family eating together.. collecting pop bottles for spending money ,ehrlers milk bottles early in the morning on the front porch. collecting baseball cards (16 cards in a pack for 10cents ) now 3 or 4 cards for 3 dollars . dads 1965 rambler with no seat belts. candy cigarettes . respect for your parents OR ELSE .getting up at 4am for a 9 hour trip to see grandma and granpa . pull out 6 ounce glass pop bottles from the machine for 10 cents . burger chef and sambos restaurants . and most of all NO POLITICAL CORRECTNESS .people minding their own buisness . and the list goes on and on . times were simpler then and more fun because we used our brains 'not our fingers . being outside was the order of the day 'not staying inside all day working our thumbs . yes i even miss adjusting our aluminum foil rabbit ear antannas to get good reception on one of our 3 tv channels . and who can forget when in 1973 they added WDRB independent 41 and rushing home from school for when it came on the air at 3pm for presto the magic clown and j fred frog lol, and who can forget randy and cactus . yep those were the good old days...if only kids today had a clue . we had nothing but had everything..... |

Aaww, you guys are killing me. I yearn for those days again. dynamo hum you are so right. We didn't have all the gizmos they do now. We had our imaginations and our friends and we had respect for elders and each other and others' property. How did we ever survive?! The kids now wouldn't have a clue.
