Are you now manufacrturing GOP promises?
What they said is they want to take spending levels back to 08 levels!
With two wars , katrina , the 911 Attack and a recession when he entered office , bush had a debt of 5 trillion after 8 years in office
On the other hand Obama has been office for ''19 months'' and amassed his own debt of 3.7 trillion! Another 600 billion was added to that just today!
No, I don't think the Republicans have any idea how to balance a budget. But I am hoping they will at least give it a try. All the reasons you are talking about is the reason Obama was forced to spend the way he did. Otherwise, a third of us would not have jobs right now. People are upset that we have a 10% unemployment rate, but they get mad when the Fed spends money to try to the economy going. Somebody has to pay the bills but nobody wants to pay taxes. But I will be patient and see what Congress does with the budget that is submitted to them.

I was just repeating what anon said. I figured you guys were the GOP experts.
As for 2008 levels of spending, maybe I should remind you of a few things:
-President Bush signed into the law the Trouble Assets Relief Program on October 3, 2008, but was not on budget until 2009. Probably the most successful GOP campaign was convincing American's that TARP was all Obama's doing. That's the price you pay for incumbency.
-In 2008 we still had two very expensive wars raging - and the Iraq war is winding down. We should expect some decrease in spending related to that conflict.
Finally...
2008 US Federal Discretionary Spending:$1.114 Trillion
2010 US Federal Discretionary Spending:$1.368 Trillion
That does not take inflation into account. The biggest increase in those two years was on infrastructure and renewable energy spending.
In my opinion, the only practical way to get the debt situation under control is to raise taxes - even modestly. But, that won't happen.

All I'm saying is the Republicans have promised to balance the budget and not raise taxes. I'm all for it.
