The Admiral is an accomplished wordsmith. He talked for a long time and never said anything of substance.

Right you are Grumpy. An example: "He said, however, it has to be the local community and its leaders who will figure out how to put things together with the [Scotland Landing] project." Of course the locals involved in the Scotland Landing scheme have figured out how they can apply for grants of taxpayers' money to fund their project. It requires willing suspension of belief in the current Veterans Administration's capability to meet the needs of veterans to argue that more taxpayer funds should be spent to duplicate what the VA already provides. It is a big stretch to believe that local businesses would donate funds for the Scotland Landing scheme in sufficient amount to maintain operations year-after-year for, let's say, 15 years. Perhaps you have noticed Grumpy that the Scotland Landing crew has not provided a detailed plan on what they propose. So far, it is smoke and mirrors.

Wow, all the guys getting a free lunch getting together to tell us what we need. When did the Pentagon enter the PR and the Political arena. The Admiral sounds like another far right republican spin doctor.

Is this what the Capitol Theater was created for? Providing a stage for Legislators and the Military to promote their programs?

Hopefully our community will continue its support in the Scotland School project. As a volunteer for over 10 years there with the Boy Scout Program, we have seen these fine youngsters grow up into fine citizens ranging from a microbiologist for the US Army to an Ordained Minister. Many have become career military, and business owners.

We should help keep alive what we supported over 100 years prior to Gov. Rendell's closing this facility.

Hey Ponch...I was there and did not hear any political rehtoric at all, in fact the ADM was making clear that his is not to make policy but to carry it out when ordered by our ELECTED officials. His tenure as Chairman thus far has covered both republican and democratic administrations. The only PR I heard him promoting was about supporting our troops and caring for their families, etc. Frankly, he is doing his duty as the highest ranking officer in the military. And Grumpy...how can you say he never said anything of substance, he answered every question that was asked. Do you support the reinstatement of the draft? No...and here is why. Should we be concerend about the Egypitan situation...he provided a strong answer. Same with Pakistan, same with the current state of the VA, same with his opinion on how America can promote a positive image around the world. I applaud him for sharing his views, many must've thought he provided a great forum because he got a standing ovation at the end, and was interupted several times during his opening segment with applause from the audience.

Confused aren't you, Diane? Miz Grandiose and others who are "Scotland Landing Foundation" are not talking about re-opening SSVC for the school age kids who were there at an annual cost of $45,000 per student. They are not concerned with "keeping alive" the old SSVC. They want to duplicate the VA's service for military veterans, not their children.

Grumpy's observation was that Mullen's performance on the Capitol stage contained pretty much what is already known. Of course, the admiral had to say he is against reinstituting the Selective Service draft. That's an easy one. I'd offer that the primary reason Mullen was invited by the Chamber of Commerce and Scotland Landing Foundation was to use him as a prop for getting attention to the proposed facility at the old SSVC. You'd have to give the Scotland Foundation people credit for bringing Mullen to town to endorse their scheme. He was clever enough to say the project has to be local which was signalling that it wouldn't become a federal government/Dept. of Defense project.

Millie if you think that VA services even begin to fulfill the need you are deluded. Did you know that if the recommendations of the Debt Commission on retired military health care would reduce the benefits of those retired and on Medicare to the same level as those who never served a day. This would mean that young medically retired service members who are so disabled they are on Medicare would look at a situation in which their service counted for absolutely nothing. ADM Mullen wasn't asked about this travesty and he didn't address it either.
