My company is moving me to the Altoona area, can any one give me opinions on schools, areas to live, things to do. I do plan to live up to 15 miles away depending on what I find. Any comments will be helpfull, thank you.

Surrounding townships are probably best. The city itself has somewhat higher taxes, more restrictions, a bit of a crime problem, and is somewhat ratty in places (not unlike other industrial towns in the Northeast). The main schools are Altoona, Hollidaysburg, and Bellwood-Antis. Some people have preferences, but I went to Altoona and did alright in life. There's also Penn State Altoona, which now offers 4-year degrees and is one of the nicest campuses you'll find anywhere. Mount Aloysius, St. Francis, UPJ, and Penn State University Park are within driving distance. For things to do, it isn't exactly Excitement Central, but there's minor league and amateur baseball, two amusement parks, plenty of places to shop and eat, and a wealth of state and federal park lands nearby. Lots of places to hike, fish, and hunt if you're into those kinds of activities. Also a large variety of community events and festivals throughout the region during the year.

Forgot to mention that in addition to the area public school districts, there are a number of private and specialty schools including business schools, Christian schools, etc. Bishop Guilfoyle is the local Catholic high school.

I'm from Bellwood, and I would recommend living in the Bellwood school district. The crime isn't nearly as bad here (Altoona and Tyrone have a lot of drugs and other problems). The school district prides itself in Academic excellence as well as sports excellence. Classroom sizes aren't nearly as big as Altoona (most graduating classes are 100-120). It's only 15 minutes from Altoona, so the drive wouldn't be bad.
