To all the people protesting the life of a squirrel and protesting the squirrel slam I wish you all would feel the same way when our president sends our troops/american soldiers to war to fight for our country and freedom in which many lives are lost in a blood curdling war and you make statements such as do unto others as you would want done to you, do you want to lose your son at war? I don't see you standing up to the president for human lives however you will stand up for a squirrels life. Therefore you should be protesting for our soldiers who are innocent like the squirrels and protesting against a government whom is trying to control us and take away our amendments/rights. Everyone knows why we go to war...oil, just like everyone knows this whole protest is in regards to gun control by the government. Did you not care about the squirrels for the past six squirrel slams?

This is an atrocious, disgusting "event" that should not be tolerated by any humane being!

A Squirrel Slam - really?
A mass killing for children and their parents to participate in as a contest? A contest for what? To see who is more insensitive and whose children are best taught to disregard life and kill animals? With prizes for killing the biggest squirrel?
Isn't there enough killing going on without teaching our children that only certain lives are worth living and others are not? And then encouraging them to kill those lives they deem as having zero importance?
Humans do not have dominion over other species.
This is just plain crazy at its finest.
I am surprised to learn the fire department - trained to save lives - would promote the killing of lives.
I'm shocked and saddened to learn there is a town in our United States of America who advertises and condones this type of behavior.
I only wish I had known about this six years ago. This has gone on far too long and too many senseless deaths have already taken place.
Please stop this madness. Your children are being encoded to shoot and kill for fun. This is not fun.
And, Yes, even squirrels deserve to live.

Since this forum quickly shifted from Holley FD's Annual Squirrel Slam to president Obama and the killing and maiming of troops, lets not forget the government funding of killing of human babies by professional healthcare providers.

I've got GUNS. I LOVE GUNS.

But I don't shoot innocent little squirrels with them.

I can't believe people want to eat a RODENT. Why not have a rat slam? YUM YUM... y'all can feast on rats next.

So Holley residents who like to shoot off their mouths, cuz they are hiding behind computer screens.... Not all people against the SLAM are weak, helpless anti gun liberals.

Some of us were raised with guns in our hands, we know how to use them, and we have tons of ammo.

Squirrels are RATS with fuzzy tails, so enjoy EATING your RAT STEW... gross man.

I don't know how anyone could eat rodents. that is totally gross.

And I'm not buying the argument that you need to eat squirrels to survive. Ya'll have a Piggly Wiggly in town somewhere I bet full of hamburgers and hot dogs.

This is really pissing ya'll off that people ALL over the country KNOW how disgusting you are eating rodents and teaching children to kill for fun and prizes.

I say everyone who turns in a squirrel should have to eat it after they clean and gut it. I bet 99% of the BIG BAD HUNTERS won't eat so much as one bite of these squirrels.

Wow... this thread has gone from bad to worse. The town of Holley has been given a great offer by people from all around the US. We will all donate to your fundraiser to save the squirrels. Why would this be denied?? To the Mayor of Holley, New York : Please respond to the offers being made here. DO NOT allow your town to be represented by the people on this thread who call themselves "Hungry Man" or "sasquatch". Its a slap in the face for your entire community to read the degrading comments made by them. Hopefully, you will agree. I really doubt that you would allow these people to speak to your wife, daughter, or mother this way. There is something that animal lovers and hunters have in common ...we love the wilderness and the bounty it brings us. Not all of us are opposed to hunting, we just dont believe in the way its being done. Squirrels live thier entire life very close to where they were born. They spend thier summer and fall preparing for the winter cold and early spring babies. They prepare nests and stash food. When they are removed from thier known perimeters, they have NO nest, no where to hide, no food...and are basically "sitting ducks". Hunting is alot about survival of the fittest, but you are placing them all on an even plateau where they are all equally defenseless. There is NO challenge in that sort of hunt. They are cold and hungry and confused. Basically, you are having an organized easter egg hunt with guns. What happens when this same child goes out to the woods to hunt the REAL way ? will he understand that sometimes you go home empty handed? Or, will he be upset and just start popping off at something else? birds, rabbits, people? I am in favor of the NRA, but I believe that society these days is forcing the government to make changes, that may adversly affect those who do the right thing. Please, I beg you.... accept the offer. Have the fire dept host a gun safety course for children, a lesson in respect for wildlife AND human life, knowledge of the animals they kill for food, Please do not allow the mentality of people like "hungry man" or "sasquatch" rub off on the future generation of Holley, New York.

This is the place for you then Iron Man Paul.

I hear you all don't even give the squirrels a fair hunt.

Where I am from we don't use traps to catch up a bunch of squirrels, then release them to shoot at.

Squirrels of Holley,
hear my words,
run and never come back.

Squirrels of Holley
teach your children
never never go back.

Squirrels of Holley
head north and south
leave Holley behind.

Poor old Holley,
kiss the squirrels goodbye.

Holley doesn't deserve squirrels.

FAIR PLAY FOR SQUIRRELS.

NO TRAPS AND SLAMS

for those who think teaching your children how to kill defenseless animals is a way of bonding together.. have you ever read books together? gone for walks, to a movie? you have to kill together to bond?? bonding over killing a defenseless creature... so glad i cannot possible think the way you do .. do you tell your children there may be hungry babies in the nest waiting for Mom to come back with food and she never will? Bond over that one ...

Squirrels are rodents that can cause significant property damage when their populations exceed their natural habitat. They are also excellent to eat. The heads are especially treasures if properly fried. Hunting squirrels is fun as they make a challenging target. Keep the tradition alive Holley!

I bet the houses of Holley are just full of holes and falling down for the mass killing you all want to do.

There is no squirrel overpopulation in Holley.

Can't shoot in the city limits anyway.

Killing squirrels to win a contest is SICK

Its time to stop griping and start making plans to get to Holley, New York on the 16th of February. Those who can drive do that. Those who need to fly you can fly into Buffalo, Niagara Falls or Rochester. Don't just sit on your hands make plans now to get to Holley on the 16th. Are you going to stand up for the poor little squirrels or just sit there and type? We will hold the rally the morning of the 16th in front of the Holley Fire Department.
DO IT!!!!!

This is not hunting - this is more of a blood sport and sets a very poor example for your children. At a time when violence is rampant in the US, this Squirrel Slam (even the name is appalling) this is just perpetuating the idea of violence. If it is important for your children to learn to use a gun, take them to a shooting range. If you want to bond with your children, take them hiking or photograph animals in the wild. There are many ways the fire department can earn money without further desensitizing children to violence. I am so glad my children had the opportunity to learn about wildlife in a way that shows respect for all of God's creatures. Thousands of folks throughout the US and the world are watching Holley. We hope you will reconsider.

I have harvested and ate about 50 squirrel so far this winter ! deal with it you bleeding heart obama loving liberals. If your not from holley get your ass of this forum and go cause problems in your own town. Oh and i also have harvested turkeys deer, fox, coyotes, and rabbits. I have also ate the many fish i have caught.
vegetables are harvested .. animals are ambushed , killed, slaughtered, murdered ... harvesting is a way to try to ease your conscience... i love the argument that people can't afford food so they have to hunt but they sure can afford ammo, guns and hunting equipment

this is about Firefighters condoning killing as a game . teaching children not to respect life ..
