It's debatable they ever needed a tower at all, at least after the base was closed.

General aviation has also suffered. I don't think there's even a place to rent planes there anymore.

Most people don't realize that planes can easily and safely take off and land without a control tower.

Those maintenance shops claiming a tower was needed for their clients are either desperate or ignorant or both.

If the county officials really felt the tower was necessary then why don't they take over it's operation?

The FAA has a program that allows communities to assume the costs of operating their towers.(see Advisory Circular AC 90-93A.)

This cost would probably be in the $300,000 to $500,000 per year range...

I personally do not feel this would be necessary and I am sure most of the politicians do not either. They are just tyring to provide the appearance that they are trying to do something. If the tower was truly important they would take the necessary action to take over it's operation...

Our county leaders didn't pull enough strings to keep the tower open, how are we going to lure in a passenger airlines to Rome without one ?

Closing the tower and leaving pilots to coordinate among themselves is like taking away all traffic lights in any city. pilots just like drivers are all licensed and know the rules and will always do the right thing. Government should stop paying the power bills for traffic lights and lay off the people that maintain them too. if that is you way of thinking. Air Traffic Controllers provide a safety service that most don't understand. As far as Picente, he did everything he could to stop the feds from closing the tower. Schumer was more interested in sending millions of dollars to Guam for a waste treatment plant than aviation safety in the United States.

I hope the county takes over the tower. Didn't they run the last one at the county airport in Oriskany ?

In another 5 years they will be using the Griffiss runway for drones practicing touch and go landings. Beware of new technology.

I love how republicans want to slash government spending, then cry when it hits home.

If you want to use that analogy, the roads as busy as the airport don't even have lights. They use stop signs....

Uticas got one! Lol
It is a sign of the times... The sign just shows how people in this area understand what is really needed to bring more business to the area. Build a tower, put up a sign, bring in a AHL hockey team, and businesses will be knocking down the doors to move their business to Utica!! Go UTICA!!
