I think you are posting just to argue with people but I'll elaborate because I don't think you get what I was eluding too with the Bass Pro Shop.
They are a sportsman's shop, the best, sportsman shop and a lot of sportsman travel to the Adirondacks via Utica. If they hadn't before this isn't a "destination" qualifier it is however a draw for people that are looking to do a certain type of activities in the ADK's. I travel to Auburn just to frequent the store there and I would believe that some would detour for the store here.
Folks from NYC may use I-87 but most from the West and South use Rt-12 to go North from Utica.
The train would be specific to people that use the train for tourism. Amtrack usage has never been higher in the history of Amtrack so a certain group of people do use the train. Usually people that are not in a hurry, have the money to pay for the train, and are interested in sightseeing more than rushing to the destination itself.
I do think a convention center would be a good idea for Utica and I think business and public events would be interested in holding events here in Utica.
Not at all, just speaking my piece as a tax paying citizen. If you and your buddies want to get into your own pockets go at it. To me it's another potential waste of taxpayer dollars. What's wrong with the Aud for events? There's no way Utica can even compete with Turning Stone let alone more preferred destinations around the state.

How many people are thinking fishing & hunting in conjunction with a trade show or convention? It's a limited market.

When will Oneida County Tourism get serious about having a convention center instead of giving out bed tax money foolishly? Also, where is the Mohawk Valley Chamber on this issue? The downtown business of Utica that always cry for public handouts but have failed to create a B.I.D. or pull themselves by the boot straps and do something meaningful? I think Downtown Utica is the only major city in NY without a business improvement district in the state. Boy could they use a convention center.
I think the Gov is dead wrong on the casino idea. Someone is going to be losing money, plus it breaks up families. We need the Mayor and Common Council,County Executive and County Legislators our State Senator and Assemblyman and Congressman all behind this issue. Plus, any business groups Mohawk Valley Edge,Genesis group and anyone else I am missing. The time is now. Let's not waist another minute. The last two rounds I feel we could have done better with our regional council and CFA's that we submit to the Gov.
Bottom line we need to organize and start having a serious conversation on having a convention center in Utica,NY
http://www.uticaod.com/latestnews/x522266714/...
They do have one. It's totally useless. The Downtown Utica Development Association. Check out their recently resigned president. She was the recipient of more than $115k in in misappropriated HUD monies and another $67k in Mainstreet grants for her private residence and huband's "office" on Bleeker. She's in line for more with upcoming Rust 2 Green projects as well as CBDGs being directed in her direction.

The city will never move forward because this is how it routinely does business. Incompetent and geared toward people who support the misguided agendas of local politicos.

So let's see, you post race bait posts and try to sell NYC convention goers on going to utica to put up with the public service paradise conditions.
I can see it now... "Go to Utica for your convention!! Get harassed ticketed and end up on probation!"
Fuck you people. Your hopes and aspirations are the perfect indicator pf how undeserved and pathetic your understanding of what makes an area attractive are. Your little screen name says it all while you post your race baiting fits. "Utica Pride".
Uticans and their "pride" are the reason they're living in a 30 mile wide cistern. Nobody wants to come there to spend one fucking cent on your parasites and "big thinkers" with your hot dog stands and piss beer economic engines. You people can't even debate. Your "biggest thinkers" have to throw fits and race attacks because you can't stand people laughing at how insignificant cny is.
Go make fkng t shirts and beer. That's about the pinnacle of cny technological and cultural know how. People from cny are so delusional about their situation and repulsive to any critique there really is no solution but to pull up a chair have a toast and watch your whole fkn unsinkable titanic slip in with all you rats screaming all the way.
Central New York deserves is. You demanded it, you attacked everyone for it and you justified it. You defended the albany liberal hypocrites' poLICE state prisonland economy. Attack, hate, arrest, criminalize, beat, abuse.
Now own it like people should and have a swim.
HOUSING YOUR DARK.

Your DARK can be accommodated in cages with stout iron bars. Make sure, however, that the bars are wide enough to push pieces of DARK food through. The rule of thumb is, four DARK per square yard of cage. So a fifteen foot by thirty foot DARK cage can accommodate two hundred DARKs. You can site a DARK cage anywhere, even on soft ground. Don't worry about your DARK fashioning makeshift shovels out of odd pieces of wood and digging an escape tunnel under the bars of the cage.DARKs never invented the shovel before and they're not about to now. In any case, your DARK is certainly too lazy to attempt escape. As long as the free food holds out, your DARK is living better than it did in Africa, so it will stay put. Buck DARKs and hoe DARK can be safely accommodated in the same cage, as bucks never attempt sex with black hoes.

Back in the 1970s, a chimpanzee named Nim Chimpsky took part in a Columbia University research study called "Project Nim."

Project Nim was led by Herbert Terrace, a psychologist at Columbia who was attempting to find out if a chimpanzee could learn to communicate using American Sign Language.

"Everyone knows that words are learned one at a time," but something happens when children begin to combine words and create true language, Terrace says.

The question, he says, was, "Could Nim do this?"

A newly released book takes a look at the project, and the people involved examine the ethics of the experiment.

The name Nim Chimpsky was a twist on Noam Chomsky, the MIT linguist who theorized that language as we know it is unique to humans. Terrace wanted to disprove Chomsky's theory and show that a chimpanzee could develop real language.

To immerse Nim in a world where he would be taught sign language in the same way a human child would, Terrace brought him to live with a family in New York City in 1973, not long after the chimp was born. There, Nim joined a sprawling, chaotic blended family with many human siblings who could teach him sign language.

The only way they can sell this bullshit any thicker is to feature "nano nuns" and have the artsy fartsy yokel community colleges send away to have someone else etch little nuns in keychains for utica to sell along the thruway like the UFD sells little flowers for beer and cigs, and money to buy gas for the chief to ride around and harass people.

Thank you, certainly need a lot of help changing peoples minds around here. I think we have an incredible wealth of knowledge and expertise in people that live here. So,many smart people.

The only thing holding Utica back is a small group of negative people. We have lost that positive can do attitude. What happened to the little engine that could? I think I can. I think I can. He did make it up that mountain. It would be scary of what could be possible if we used the brightest minds to work together. I think we are afraid of success. When someone tells your no good for so long you start to believe them.

I for one think the glass is half full and Utica's future is very bright. Our best days our yet to come. History tepees itself and Utica will come back. It's inevitable.

One last though about the convention center. If I was a meeting planner,I think it would be wonderful to tie my event into one of the weekends that had a feast going on.

You guys are funny. Utica has no future. You guys have dreams and hopes but little sense of reality.

If all that's holding Utica back is a "small group of negative people" then you guys should have no problem at all coming up with boatloads of private capital from investors that are willing to overlook such a small obstacle in a city with such promise.

There is empty venue after empty venue that can accommodate any range of events that go empty and unused. Let's hear your agenda and great plan. What about a tax payer funded convention center is going to draw people here for functions and conventions when existing venues can't? What amenities are going to cause planners to ignore all that Turning Stone has from amenities to entertainment and restaurants and beyond?

What is going to cause planners, groups, companies and trade organizations to say hey, let's hold our event in a city that repeatedly and publicly rank in the bottom of every social, economic and business demographic rankings and sets in the country?

Yeah you people are smoking the skittles and Jolly Ranchers.

"History tepees itself and Utica will come back. It's inevitable?"

Look, you uticans' minds are so completely closed light can't escape. Nobody is going to risk death, depression, crack wars, guncrazy armycops, probation and old fat loud people to come to your "convention center".

Utica is a convention alright! It's a convention of idiots, egotists, women abusers, addicts, alcoholics, gullibles and public job/political parasites.

You are taxed to fcking horse glue, business repulsive, your schools are sports-crazed neanderthal villages and your laws are used to regulate businesses to death and keep you paying someone for some "mistake" you made. It's all about money. NY now has more welfare-job public service and welfare people taking than producing people who pay for your endless layers of tax and cost and harassment.

Yeah a "nun tour", a pisspot brewery NFP Kenyan footrace and cold wet pizza. Maybe another wooden fort will make the world beat a path to the cny troll bridge to get attacked haha!

What's inevitable? Someone getting smart and using utica to test a fucking nuclear rat bomb to see if it's the final solution to that stoplight tangled police state welfare stink hole.

And then there's the BAD people there!

Some people I know don't like the casino because of the smoking number one.
People said the same thing when the built the casino. Who will go to Verona,NY. Middle of a cow field.
Number two Senator Bruno got tax payer money to help expand the Saratoga Springs Convention Center.
They didn't worry 25 years ago about having attractions. They just did it. No corporate stores were open in Saratoga back then. Other money can come from the room tax and memberships. It could be funded through a private group. Maybe the city could put out a request for proposal.
The Harbor could be a location for a convention center.
You would have been the person that said the world is flat so let's not cross the ocean. Or maybe yup have another motive why you don't want this to happen. It will happen. The only question is how long will it take.

I hope you don't work for Oneida County Tourism that would be a scary thought. Maybe the county executive and county legislators should rethink how the room tax money is given out.
