I know what this poor family is going through. We had a dog get loose and the Kent County Sheriff picked her up and adopted her out to someone right down the street the very same day. Not only did our dog have a tag, she had a microchip! Luckily, we were dealing with people who really wanted her to find her home and we got her back. My heart goes out to you!

This is crazy. If the original owners were concerned- they would have alterted the Humane Society to begin with. The have seen recent things like this in the news and just wanted some publicity.
The shelter went above and beyond what they were requried to do when they called the new owners and now they are getting ran through the mud. Thats not fair- it just goes to show- you can never please everyone.

Get a new dog and take a little better care of this one!

As a dog owner I cannot imagine knowing someone else, unknowlingly, had my baby. I can only hope that the new owners would hear the story and give them their dog back. Surely there is another dog the new family to adopt.

ummmm... i bet they'll have proof. if the markings are as unique as they say, a few simple pictures will prove it. how terrible, to have your dog given away to someone else in only one week...

To the family that adopted Mia...please be a sport and let the poor dog go back to her family. Its the right thing to do. This family is who Mia knows and loves.

Another fine example of the INHumane Society at work. And the new owner should be ashamed of themselves. We live in a ME world where not many people care about anyone else much these days or doing what's right. as long as we get what we want.

This makes Ottawa look bad.

The Humane Society's hands were pretty much tied it sounds like, but shame on the people who won't give they dog back. It's not like they are emotionally attached to the dog, especially not like the Zwagermans are after 9 years of having the dog. They need to stop and think about what it would be like if the shoe were on the other foot.

Why did the original owners wait so long?? If this dog meant so much to them then why weren't they more aggressive in finding it?? Now they want it back..... I don't think so! You couldn't take care of it to begin with so what's to say this won't happen again??

I am incensed to think that someone would refuse to return a pet to their proper owner. Maybe they should put themselves in the same situation and see how it feels to be treated so unfairly. My heart ACHES to think that this animal has been taken from her true family!!!

Are you kidding me!?!? Give her back the dog! She's had that dog for nine years and the new owners refuse to give her back! Those must be some SELFISH! people. Pets are members of the family. Who do you think deserves Mia, her mother, who has had the dog for NINE YEARS or the new owners, who have only had her for a couple of days? DUH!

Policy is 4 days without a tag? They are lucky the dog is going to a good home and was not put down long before they called! I'll bet if it was a mutt and not a pure bred it probably would have been.

Just give the dog back. You could not have possibly formed the same attachment in a day or 2 that this family has in 9 years. Do the right thing and give the pet back to its righful owners.

What is this world coming to-the dog was still at the humane society, had not even gone home to new owner yet, and neither humane society nor new owner can do the right thing and reunite dog with his family of nine years. What ever happened to treating people the way we would want them to treat us. The humane society hiding behind the excuse-"we have no proof it even was their dog" and refusing to comment to media makes them seem idiotic and certainly not worthy of the trust that all the people who donate money to them expect. I for one wouldn't donate another dime to them if they didn't step up and do the right thing and apoligize for the delay doing it.

They did not do the responsible thing. Seriously, they did not tag their dog and didn't check at the Humane Society for a week! The dog is a living creature that deserves more care than that.
Anybody who disagrees with me on this is wrong.

I would be devistated if this happened to me. I love my dogs and to think that someone else has them is an awful feeling. This dog probably wonders what happened to her family that she has had for 9 years. I really hope the new family returns the dog to her owners.

this is just the animal shelter pushing theyre weight around, give the dog back ,if it was one of them they would want it, granted the familly waited a week to call but if they can prove without a doubt the dog belongs to them then do the right thing and give it back.by reaching out to the news i hope this helps to get your best friend back
