the school new of the problem in the 1990's thats why Dr.Lechin was brought in from newfield in the first place. October of my 11th grade year we had 3 od's in the school yet no assembly or parent notification, The same year a heroin addicted 18 year old Centereach student killed his mother. If they acted then maybe it wouldnt have continued and Centereach dove for the worst. I remember walking along middle country road and running into about 60 heroin addicted kids ages 15 - 19 from burger king to home depot. I used to think the whole world had a seious addiction when I first got clean because it was just so prevalent. 16-19 year old kids driving into eat new york, bushwick, and bed stuy bk, hunts pt bronx and washington heights think about your daughters driving into these areas becaus ethats what we did and thats what they do. it is truy sad that the school new about the problem to the extent of the 6th precinct implementing cameras and dog walk throughs yet the parents knew nothing, no one was notified, and us kids didnt want them to know, so they werent gonna find out from us. We'd use at school and not bring home evidence or hide it well, the only ones who caught on were the teachers and schools kids were nodding and snorting lines openly in the cafeteria as well as shooting dope in their veins in the bathrooms. it just angers me so because so much could have been done and so many kids have now died

and what i can blame o the school is the fact they didnt notify parents of the constant od's. 3 in one month, i saw the adminstrators run out into the senior parking lot after a girl i knew and they caught up to her as she stopped to puke from the heroin, again no notices. it got swept under the rug, they wanted to ignore it. Sachem made parents attend a ]n assembly on the dangers of heroin in order for the kids to be able to buy a prom ticket why didnt centereach d something like this? just in the past 3 years, i think its 8 now, 12-18 yearolds have died from Centereach you take into account the past 13 years and we are up in the 30's+ no it is not the schools fault but their negligence was and is a huge factor. Parents count on the schools to watch their kids and when they are shootingup in school and nodding in class and not even notifying the parents it is an issue, especially the numbers we are talking about In my grad class alone (1990's)i can count 43 kids off the top of my head thats out of 400, Im not even counting the older and younger grade who seemed even more affected I dont blame the schools but i do thing they acted poorly and have some blame in the fact that over 10 years have passed and we have seen 8 deaths from one recent graduating class it hasnt gotten better it has gotten worse and the parents seem just as naive, the only whistle blowers being people like myself a former heroin addict centereach grad college student who wishes to stir it up so more dont have to be dying 10 years from now

I have not been on here in awhile, just want to refresh everyone's memory about Centereach High School in 1996 and 1997.
My daughter was new at Centereach High School and a senior named Lou Diamon introduced her to heroin, I tried everything to keep him away from her, went to the principle, Dr. Leshin, and the narcotic squad and his parents.
Well Cheryl overdosed and lives in Schenectady, N.Y. in a nursing home for 13 years now. She still cannot walk, talk, move legs arms or hands is blind and on a feeding tube and in a wheelchair. I visit her everday and moved up here to be near her.

Kathleen Walsh is a school board member, and her sons are drug addicts, she always uses her power to get them out of trouble with the cops, well now a student is really hurt because of people like her who get the kids out of criminal charges but the real problem is drugs, if you really want change in our schools don't vote for people like her and she will have to go back to being a hairdresser selling knockoff pocket books for a living not running our schools and the town, come-on her husband pushed her into being on the school board preping her to run for town consil and even made her deputy supervisor of brookhaven, no education no experience and a house that she cannot control her own, write letters to state officals and the district attorney and have her investigated for abuse of power and getting favors having her kid charges dropped in NY and in Florida where her son was caught with 18 pills oxycontin without a prescrition, if the drugs are right under her nose and in her house you can bet she can't stop them from being in your schools or town. LOCK HER UP!

Why blame it on the school. Typical parent passing the blame. She made her own decision and now has to live with it.

I was in high school with Cheryl, a yr ahead of her. I have struggled on & off with heroin addiction since I was a senior in that school. I knew Lou Diamond & yes he is dead. The school had a major drug problem. Teachers were told to look the other way, when drugs were found on some of my friends, the school took the drugs & sent the student to night school. Heroin was used right out in the open. The school denied having a drug problem & their covering it up to protect the reputation of the school only lead to it getting worse. These are not just my opinions, these are things I witnessed first hand. My family was told by a family friend who happens to be a retired teacher out of CHS about the denial & covering up. Cheryl's Mom was not the only parent to go to that school & try to make a difference. I have never forgotten Cheryl. She was not the only student to die from heroin use out of that school. The last few years the media has started to push the problem like it is so much worse. They use statistics based on treatment centers when there is 1/6 the treatment centers there was years ago.

I was in the class of 1996. totally agree with everything you are saying because I experienced the same. I bet I know you too. Who ever you are I am glad you are clean :) The 18 yr old who killed his mom was my friend since we were 6. It's 1 of my worst experiences to have lived thru but it never stopped me.

I knew Cheryl and her friends. Her mother was very protective but sometimes it doesn't work. Very sorry was just checking to find out what happened to your daughter and stumbled across this page. A lot of people including Lou died, they were all victims.

It is not the schools problem-people need to take responsibility for the lack of family life, taking an active role in kids lives and being parents. Follow your kids around if you have to. You can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink.....I graduated middle country along with 20-30 close friends who are hard working functioning adults who are devoted to their families.........and are not drug addicts. If you are an addict and reading this: seek help. Your not a victim of a bad school-you made choices.
