I know using chlorine to make water safe might seem weird to some people, but I do some work with the American Chemistry Council and chlorine has actually been used to make drinking water safe in U.S. cities for 100 years. I think it's most important in low-lying places like Florida where there isn't a natural bedrock to filter the water.
