I think so.

His new policy on cell phones is absurd.
They have to do community service that day or get a few days out if they get caught with on on school premises.

My question which he still hasn't answered since this policy has taken action is:
What if we have a bomb threat again like last year?
I was a freshman that year and I'm happy I had my cell phone. Teachers were demanding that we call home basically and try to get home.
What if there is a shooter in our school and we can't call anyone because we can't have phones?

I have seen two people so far do community service and one had to rake leaves in the rain which is insane and the other did it yesterday.
Then, one girl in my health class chose to get O.S.S rather than doing the service.

I would do that, especially since it's flu season.

And I believe that keep all the students in the cafeteria before 8:00 is unnecessary because just recently, a girl got into a fight with another girl and nobody could do anything because so many people were crouded into the cafeteria, and the girl who started it pulled her down in between two lunch tables, so really, nobody could get to her.
One of the teachers, Mr. Smith even said that he was right there and didn't even know what happened because he couldn't see.

I think he's taking his job a little too far.
Especially for us Sophomores. Our parking is determined next year by what grades we make and how many days we miss.
And if we don't get a good grade or miss over the limit he set, we have to pay the full new price of $70, and I know kids that can't afford that much that quick.

But that's just my opinion.

Wow - sounds like this fellow is ruffling some feathers with his new rules. If the cell phone policy and parking rates are accurate, there is a problem here with authority.

Cell phones are a part of life now. High school students should be mature enough to keep them out of sight during the school day. Are the students being responsible, or using them in class? Any teacher worth her salt can control use in class...some keep a basket on their desk - drop off when you enter/pick up when you leave. Other policies require that the phones be off during set hours (8-3:30). There are simple ways to deal with this one.

$70 to park is too steep, unless there is a current paving project planned to accomodate more drivers.

I suggest that you take a very nonemotional approach to trying to change these rules. I suspect he has a contract, so you're probably stuck with him for a while.

Have your student gov pres compile a list of student concerns - just the facts...with a solution for each problem. Start negotiations for change. Document, document, document (meetings and content). If administration and student/parents cannot come to an agreement, showing that you have tried will add credibility to your case.

Involve the pto..or whatever parent organization is there. If you don't have one - get one. Students are children first, and parents do and should have input to the entire educational day.

Don't just complain, use what your teachers have taught you about problem solving, persuasvie writing, and research. See what other districts are doing - compare your test scores. Is there a Department of Education policy that is being violated.

You have options - use them!

I agree that the phone deal is absurd, My child would be expected to call me, and then 911 and try to get to safety. The sad thing is if they do the In school suspension, they have the half a day community service, but the option is to stay out and have that on your permanent recored. Maybe all the students should turn their phones in at 8 am and pick up at 3 pm, how would the office deal with 300 phones coming in at once?

I don't believe discipline and respect are bad things. Some of the new rules may be strict, but maybe that is what the students need.

Students should be mature enough to use their cell phones when necessary or an emergency, but lets face it most of them aren't. Students aren't at school to learn from text messages. Most schools do have rules regarding cell phones. Check around to other schools to see what their policies are.

Community service isn't a bad thing. More students should be involved in the community.

$70 is cheap for a parking pass. I know some schools parking passes cost more than $100. Driving to school is a privelege not a right. Good grades are something students should strive for.

Look at the positives and the negatives. Most teachers are there to help not to hurt students. Believe it or not, most teachers just want the best for their students. And if you don't like something, your voice can make a change.

I keep mine cell phone in my jacket pocket all day and I keep it off. I turn it on during lunch when I go to the bathrooms to see if I have anything unread or any voicemails.

Remember that this is Summers County Who Would Have Thought, not many people can afford that.

And to Former Educator, we've tried to talk to him about it, we've talked to teachers and they agree with him basically so they won't have to hear it from Niswander.

Most school students from other schools said that their cell phone policy is as long as it's out of site, on silent or vibrate and not out during class for lectures, lessons, tests etc, it's fine.

Another thing that irks me about him is the new tardy policy. If you get late, you spend the rest of the day in I.S.S. I've had to do it once a week or so ago when we had that rain storm. My power went out and I drove and because my power was out, my clocks were behind a bit so I didn't know what time it actually was until I got in the car. I arrived at school 2 mins after the bell and he said that because my power was out, that wasn't a good enough excuse, gave me a tardy slip and had to go back to class. I had to do that because Coach Ryan was at States and nobody could watch the I.S.S room, so I had to go Monday.

That entire day I was in there, I didn't do anything because teachers rarely send your assignments unless they either realize you are in there or they do it every time.
I asked students at the pep rally that day when we went with Coach Ryan what did we do in our classes, they said we did lessons, a test and other things.

We don't even have lunch detention anymore and I preferred that. It was always times in lunch detention in one six weeks means one day spent in I.S.S.

I think cell phones are fine. Out of site on vibrate. Emergencies happen.

It is Summers County. I live in Summers County. I know how things are. There is money for cell phones, money for cars and for the gas for the car. What is most important? People make time and money for the important things in life.

I know at one school after so many tardies you go to after school detention. If you fail to do that then you are suspended. If you continually are tardy then driving privileges are taken. I don't believe in the ISS.

Parents should be involved and the students need to band together. Come up with something that both sides can work with. Both sides would have to compromise!

Does the cell phone policy pertain to teachers, as well? I know for a fact that RP talks to her daughters during class on her cell phone.

He may have good reason to be as strict as he is but the students aren't the only ones that need a little attitude adjusting. There are some teachers that are way out of control with their attitudes, beligerent mouths, and unfair treatment, i.e. letting certain students get by with things that they nail others for. There are teachers that have had personal issues either with the parents or the students and are out to get the student one way or the other. I have seen it for myself. It did not concern my child so I did not feel I had the right to get involved but now I feel bad that I did not stick up for the student.

Ask the football guys why the girls they selected for the homecoming court was not the same girls that were named and awarded the honor. Ask them who the teacher was in charge of that. Then ask why she/he did what they did. Once it happened, it couldn't be changed because there would have been some very upset young ladies and some very hurt young ladies.

He kinda already does.

All basketball players have gotten away with EVERYTHING so far.
I've seen them pull out cell phones, be late for class and all. What do they get? Nothing.

It's like this everywhere. You play good and give the school state trophies, you get away with whatever you want.

i agree i am a student there as well and i have also witnessed that happen...if you are the pretty girl or the good athlete...im not saying that the girls and the boys are not good and im not saying that they do not EVER get in trouble but most of the time its not likely to happen...it amazes me that someone can come up with so many absurd rules in such a short period of time...the first thing that was said when he came to summers county was you wont see any BIG changes and then he tried to put chains up in the halls?...its crazy!…and these people who do NOT even understand the fact that no we don’t want something to “bitch about” and that “community service is a good thing” and “we are not mature enough to have cell phones in school” need to realize that most students have cell phones for emergencies not for pleasure of texting, its not really community service that we are doing, and we DONT want to bitch….obviously every one has there own opinion but I think that niswander is to strict and needs to lighten up a little….our school isnt that out of control…

I am told she not the only teacher or staffer that uses classroom time to chat on the phone. I guess I am kind of simple minded but I think that if students must keep cells out of sight then so should the staff. Setting an example for students used to be a priority for teachers.

My mom bought me my cell phone for emergencies only. She took off texting too. She said I only get it during the summer? Oh well.

He should let the kids who work hard in classes, keep their grades up get away with things sometimes. In my opinion, the only reason people in sports don't fail is because if they are a star member, our school "needs them" and they raise their grades up to play.
I work my butt off every day. I absolutely suck at math after you get past fractions, but I still try my hardest to get at least a C to pass.
Yeah, I have friends on the teams that do keep their grades up, but I see so many slackers, especially guys, that think they can get away with it.

I don't think it's fair at all.

I mean yeah, some teachers let you get away with some tardies if you are a minute or two late but no more, but some send you right to Coach Ryan unless you have a excused tardy.

I'm usually at least a minute late for biology every day because my locker is in the 100 hallway but the class I have is down at the end near the football field of the 200 hallway and I have to switch books and get through people, but Coach Mann usually lets me by because he knows how far I have to go around the school.

Stuff like that should be counted as an excused tardy, but apparently not to some teachers. How do they expect us to get through the halls when people just sit there and talk. Not to single out anyone, but especially that group of rednecks that stand right out from Mrs. Fix's room. They go out to the middle of the hall way and I have to shove through them to get to my locker half the time. It's insane.

I know Pack will sit there in his office all day and talk on that phone if he could. Niswander keeps his in his hand every single time I see him. I have Bolling first period and he keeps his on him, but he keeps it on for an alarm to let him know when to start class. He usually lets us all sit down and get ready and let the announcements play and usually right after that, his phone would go off and let him know to start class.

I have RP for homeroom if it's who I think it is and I've never seen her on the phone but I only go in her room for report cards or when we have to go in there.

My mom doesn’t want my phone on in school and I respect her enough to listen. I never use my cell until I get on the bus to text my friends and boyfriend and I don’t see what would be wrong with using out I pods and cell’s in lunch or breakfast?…it’s not like we are in a class that we need to concentrate on….and why give somebody a punishment like community service and ISS for a cell phone? And them supposable being allowed to search you for the phones and I pods is over the top….my mother has spoken with Mr. Niswander about three times since he has became principle over various issues. In one case was him excusing my cousin to go to the doctor when she had blisters down her throat to where she couldn’t even swallow and the nurse told her to go home and he wouldn’t allow it without making her take all the exams and she is a senior with a 4.00 average and only misses when she has to. I just don’t understand why he is so strict on us and we haven’t done anything that bad….yeah there are people who are out of control but why punish everyone?!

That's insane. When Pivont says you need to go home, why would he deny it? He can't make you take exams. I had to miss the first day of exams last semester because my road was still blocked up with snow.

He never said anything of it.

I know what you mean. Lunch is the only time during school hours I use my phone. He thinks that because we are on school property, teachers and other staff are technically our parents so they "have a right" to search us, but yet if cops are involved, we have to have a parent there? Hm..

He needs to get his facts straight.
Last year someone told Crowder I had coke on me and Crowder asked if I would mind being searched by her in T. Kirkams office. I told her no becuase I knew I didn't have any one me, nor would I ever touch the stuff. She searched my locker and even let me clean it out while she searched.

Crowder was loved by a lot of the students and she treated everyone fairly. She came to all games and has a lot of SCHS school spirit.
I doubt Niswander has any of that. He almost made me pay for another ticket when I had to go back to the car during a girls basketball game to get my jacket. I had to sit and argue with him about it and I even had people tell him they saw my buy a ticket before the game started.
