My friend went to the council meeting last night. Why in the world did Oxley vote for the bars in town? Does he not care about our town? I know some of the council members are idiots and needed to go, but i'm starting to think he's in the same group. 3rd Avenue has always been hell on earth. Best idea I've seen in 56 years of my life is shutting them down.

We can save enough money on Police & Ambulance calls to 3rd Ave. while the bars are closed to pay for any legal debt. I have seen Oxley coming out of Lightner's so that might explain his vote.

What he does in the bar is his business, if he is drinking and gets caught, then it is on him. I have seen more prominent, professional business people coming out ot those places. Does that make them bad? No! There are other things that need to take place with the bars!

damn is this the spainish inquision, salem witch hunts, red scare or some new pius paranoid invasion of civil rights and liberties. If we do not learn from history we damn ourselves to repeat it till we do.I understood and supported the closing of those establishments in town until the attacks turned personal and generalized.Saw so and so go there therefore! WTF!!!!!History repeats when not learned till ppl get it.Was hoping this would be a wake up call to those establishments to discourage activity though they have no control over individuals other than guidelines to discourage unwanted behaviors.Mature thinking is needed to address the problems that exist not childish bashing and bantor.Let's get it togeather and move foreward and not backwards to repeat past mistakes.

Wow, you think Hinton might be improving and it gets worse; poor "wannabees", who were given a 'little' political power, especially if they have a personal 'axe to grind', or need to excercise their small minded opinion rights. Lightners was there as Maddy Brothers back in the early days, and operated as normal 'bars' do, before they had to worry about low standards, morals, or DRUGS! People took their kids in there for ice cream, and if they chose to drink beer, guess what--it beats sleeping with people who aren't your spouses, cheating hard working honest people out of their money, cheating on your taxes, trying to destroy those who get in your way, going to church every week, then doing these other things in secret, plus cursing a blue streak, and drinking like a fish when it suits YOU! Let's not mention people who can't clean up their own families, but will decide other's destiny because they were voted in for a REASON, other than the obvious. Oh, in Europe, they call these places a PUB, and they're usually places where family and friends gather to socialize, but where the town's minds arent' so tiny. These two bar owners were sent letters giving them DAYS notice that they would no longer have a source of income, without any reason, and they can't even sell the places as they are, because a BAR isn't allowed in this heavenly, pristine town. Some of the ones who frequented the bar where ones with no other place to go, sometimes they went to get something to eat, which was provided, and sometimes they were broke without any way to get a penny. And you all think that's worse than the callous, uppity, pathetic hypocrites--well, just wait, with the election coming up, and this stuff going on, you'll look back and wish you had those poor bars to go to and hide from all the ugly power that's been given to the ugly people. I live on the upper side of the county, and I'll go to Lewisburg and into Virginia where maybe it's not perfect, but it hasn't gone to the DEVIL yet!!

Shutting the bars down will bring the drug and drinking problem closer into other's lives--do we really want that, and are we up to dealing with it? Imagine them gone, then imagine where all the frequenters are going to take their problems and miseries--maybe to YOU!

I believe that the attempt to close the bars in town basically shows the inadequacy of or police department and mayor along with his personal vendettas. Danny's and lightners do not own the street or the sidewalk in front of their establishment's the two owners are simply practicing their rights buy owning and operating a business, the person who decides to go in and drink is responsible for their actions after they leave the bar and enter the cities properties just as it would be at pops or any other establishment just look at the crowds of people that stand outside down there and yes Joe is often seen there alot, but big deal the fact of the matter is closing a business in a place that has few of them isnt the solution its just a very narrow minded one, how about writing tickets to the ones caught causing problems as a cash fine then if they dont pay give them community service or face being arrested, their are so many more options then closing the establishments but or mayor and city manager have chose this one it only leads me to believe our mayor and the owner of pops want to cut out competition not from front door patrons but back door ones if you know what I mean

Thankfully, newcomers to Hinton will see the rivers, bridges, churches, trees, street lights, old buildings, the marvelous work Kenny Allman and Sherry Burroughs have done, because, hopefully that's the kind of people who will be coming to Hinton. They won't be surprised that there's two bars in town, because that's just an element of any town, and the bars aren't the reason there's a drug problem or alcohol either, because there's always been the 'drinkers' in town. I would be afraid that the attitudes we encounter among the people would contribute more to a drug problem than two small town bars--if the people would work on solving the problem in a humane manner, then those two establishments wouldn't be a threat to anyone. I would rather have newcomers see that street then all the vacant lots where a portion of the town has been torched, or all the houses that are an eyesore to the public because they're not only rundown, but dirty and unkept. I have a feeling if the 'HUD' situation in Hinton was monitered as closely as these two businesses, you not only might be fixing some of the drug situation, but the spotlight might come shining closer to some of the 'power people', and even some of the negative 'posters' on here.

Watch the news once in a while. Other cities, Bluefield for one, do shut bars down when they become a public nuisance. One shooting outside a bar in another city will get that bar shut down. I'm not sure about actual gun shots but how many stabbings have taken place at the bars on 3rd over the years with no consequence to the bar owners? There are fights & cussing going on out there at any given time of day which makes going to Big4 a little scary. How ridiculous that your whole argument to keep the bars open is that you don't want these people in your neighborhood! The bar owners did have the right to walk outside & run people off from in front of their businesses.
