4th visit to your area! Summersville Lake?

This will be my 4th visit in 6yrs to the Hinton area. I never get tired of the beautiful, litter-free landscape. The last 2 times down, we rented a boat and went out on the Bluestone. This time, we're thinking of Summersville. Any suggestions there?
I'm looking for links to local activities going on July 26-28th.(I'm down for a concert on the 27th)
There's a bird sanctuary I'd like to check out too.
All tips and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
Cya!

Hi Cya......if the bird sanctuary is the Three Rivers Avian Center in Brooks you need to look at their web page for when they have visiting days.....they do a great job up there. Summersville Lake is beautiful and wonderful to swim in....clear water and very deep in places...350 deep in one spot according to my depth gauge. I don't know much about the boat rentals at Summersville but they operate a marina there and I think you can find a number online.....good luck.....have fun while in WV and stop at Tamarack for a great lunch and buy some crafts :).....pottery maybe!

Three Rivers Avian Center is a great place and is run by a great couple. www.tracwv.org If you do go to Tamarack look for Gary Shaffer's pottery. The man has an awesome talent. A friend in Charleston has a mug that he did and I want one, too. Brooks has some wonderful people.

Moonbeam: Thanks for the link! They don't have any public tours for the weekend I'll be down, but it says they have private tours, so I'll see if they'll let us make an appointment to check it out.
We did Tamarack last year. Very interesting stuff! It's worth a 2nd look for sure.
We did the Bluestone twice and toured Pipestem 3yrs ago, so I think Summersville Lake is on the agenda. I gotta get my boat/water fix.. and your lakes are beautiful.
We're staying in Hinton and visiting family for a concert/pig roast in Brooks, so if you have any other suggestions for local activities, attractions or vendors, send them my way! I appreciate all the responses, and we're looking forward to your beautiful scenery!

It's so nice to read positive things being said about our area. I'm so happy to know that there are people out there who know what beauty really is and actually take the time to appreciate and enjoy it.

Hi Brookie! I remember you! I always have a blast at the pig roast/concert. I drive 8 hours to come down there to laugh my ass off!
I'm a city girl, so I had to be schooled on Blue Grass music. I've seen so many interesting acts over the years down there. I hope you'll mark your calendar and join us again!
There's a certain point on our ride into WV that's just breathtaking (along I-64?) The view of the Bluestone Dam from a boat is amazing. It's a very impressive (and scary) experience.
But one thing I'll never get used to: The crazy narrow, winding, hilly roads you have out there. I don't know how you guys get around in the winter with snow and ice. Even along your highways are these areas where trucks can slam into if they lose their brakes. What??? Lose their brakes? OMG!!

One night I was coming back from Georgia and almost took one of those emergency truck ramps thinking it was an exit. Talk about an adrenaline rush. Wowzers!

Rental pontoon boats on summersville lake run 250 a dayfor a six person 350 for 10 person plus tax n gas. You can rent from marina or summersville lake retreat campgrounds. Grandview Park is a great stop for the view and walking trails and of course the outdoor theater

$250 for the day is about what we were expecting to pay- but we need to call ahead and make sure the boats are in good condition. We just rented one at the Jersey shore and it was the most crappy boat we've ever rented.
Unfortunately, the Avian center is not able to let us tour their facility- so this gives us more time for Summersville Lake. We'll probably stay overnite near the Lake-- so any suggestions for motels nearby would be appreciated!
We'll check out Grandview Park too- thanks!
We're really looking forward to our trip and hearing some local musicians jam all day. Fingers crossed for good weather!
