Hi, Nice photo!

I'm doing research on my family history and have a possible connection to William H. Lilly, but have found there are more than one people by that same name. Which William H. Lilly is portrayed in your photo above?

Thus far, I have found:
William Henry Lilly "Hickory Bill" (married to Jane)- This is the one I think is my ancestor.
William H. Lilly "Groundhog Bill" (married to Frances)
William Henderson Lilly "One-arm Bill" (married to Matilda)
William H. Lilly "Bearwallow Billy" (married to Lucinda)

This is the way I've traced it back from my mother's side.

Grandmother: Cleo Hubbard (married James B Reed)
Great grandmother: Ada Mariah Moye (married Henry Erastus Hubbard)
Great-great grandmother: Sarah Elizabeth Lilly married to Evermont Moye)
Great-great-great grandparents: William H. Lilly and Jane Cooper.

Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated!

Good evening to you. The William H. Lilly pictured here, along with his wife, was given this nick-name after he lost his arm during the Battle of Cloyds Farm in April of 1864, during the Civil War. He was my great-grandfather and not the one in your lineage. I have some books and will try to look up some names for you and then get back to you about this.

Good morning, cousin. My father was James William, brother to your ggf..John Henry. I remember Uncle Henry and Aunt Clara. I left Hinton in 1959, but used to run into "Jerry" when visiting. I am proud of my heritage, even tho there may have been a few "less than stellar" members of the family! Did you attend the laying of One-Arm Bill's confederate headstone several years ago? I have a tape of it. If not, you missed an impressive occasion.

There are two William Lilly's from the same area who lost an arm. One is known as "One Armed Bill"; I don't know how he lost his arm.

My great-grandfather William Henry Lilly was known as "Hickory Bill" because he used stripped bark from a hickory tree as bit and bridle to sneak home to check on things in the early days of the Civil War. He lost an arm during the war. His photo is on my ancestry.com tree Eden's Harvest.
