Guess you noticed how he went from the "baby blue" to the "red, white, and blue", Is he trying to show that he has matured over the years?

So does he still intend to continue working both positions if elected? I mean it would seem to me that being Sheriff would be a full time job.
Out of curiosity is the city judge an elected position or an appointed one? If it's appointed who makes that decision?
I'm sure that being a sheriff is more than a full time position! He has made it clear that he will be taking a leave of absence from CSX.
The judge position is an appointed one, but I'm not really sure who does the appointing.

"He has made it clear that he will be taking a leave of absence from CSX."

Thanks for clarifying. I had no idea he made it clear that he would be taking a leave of absence from CSX as I have never heard him speak personally. As I mentioned, is there some place that I can find out where he stands on issues that directly affect the community?

So far, based on comments here, it seems that he knows a lot of people though I'm not comfortable basing my vote just on that alone.

Many politicians "know" a lot of people, that alone doesn't make them best suited for the job.

Mr. Shaver has worked the railroad a long time, so why would he want to take a leave from one of the highest paying jobs to be Sheriff? If I had a family to take care of, I believe it would be sensible to take a financial stand. He has already been a public servant to help people, so does this mean there are other reasons?

Mr. Dolphin shame on you and your supporters for thinking the residents of Summers County are backwoods, illiterate hillbillies. Did you honestly think readers couldn’t figure out the negative postings are coming directly from you and your supporters? Well, duh, here is how I figured it out. You see there are only two (2) candidates now in this election instead of the 13 that were in the primary. So every time a negative posting appears against Mr. Shaver, EVERYONE KNOWS, it is coming from you and your supporters. Nope we are not as stupid as you think.

Mr. Dolphin, you and your supporters, proclaim that Mr. Shaver has a bad reputation “because lost an election before”. By making that ignorant remark you have disrespected the reputation of all candidates that have ever lost an election. You have disrespected Mr. Hellems, Mr. Parmer, Mr. Wheeler, Mr. Sears, Mr. Meadows, Mr. Dickenson, Mr. Willis, Mr. Dunn, Mr. Cales, and those are just a few from the 2008 primary. There have been hundreds of candidates to lose election bids, that doesn’t mean they have a bad reputation. Again, I say shame on you and your supporters.

Mr. Dolphin here is another clue, you pretend that “no one” knows Mr. Shaver’s credentials. If you had lived a lifetime in Summers County, instead of New Jersey, you would know. But since you are playing ignorant and since I am a lifelong resident of Summers County I shall enlighten you on his history. Mr. Shaver was literally born at home and raised in the West End of Hinton, attended Riverview Elementary School and graduated from Hinton High School. In his youth he mowed laws and delivered the Hinton Daily Newspaper. At the age of 16 he was baptized at the First Baptist Church by Reverend Elwell alongside of Eddie Cobb, Pastor Cobb’s father. After graduation he attended both Beckley and Concord Colleges. He drove a lumber truck, cut mining timbers, and worked for Order’s Construction building the bridge that links Route 3 to Temple Street (do you know which one that is?) In the mid 70’s he was hired as a police officer for the City of Hinton. He received his law enforcement certification from the WV State Police Academy, along with many other certifications. He was elected and served as Magistrate, educated, trained, and certified by the WV State Supreme Court. He lost his bid for Sheriff,(you got that one right), but the color baby blue for his signs that was his wife’s idea. You see her father, Ernie Moye, used to race cars, and her father called his race car “Baby Blue 42”. Mr. Shaver was elected to multiple terms on the Summers County Democrat Executive Committee where he served as Chairman and Treasurer. For a decade he and his wife successfully raised and campaigned German Shepherd Dogs. Their #1 Champion, Shaquille (Shaq to his friends) won at the West Minister Dog Show I know this to be true because I saw it myself on TV. In 2001 he was appointed as Judge for the City of Hinton where he receives annual certification from the WV Municipal Court League. From 1975 until now he has been a member of the United Transportation Union, employed as a conductor for CSX, formerly the Chessie System, formerly C&O Railroad. But you couldn’t know that because you are from New Jersey, not Summers County. One more extremely important fact you don’t know, his grandchildren call him PaPa Curtis. As a father and grandfather he is determined to make this county a safer place for all children by eliminating as many drug dealers and criminals as possible. So again, I say shame on you Mr. Dolphin and your supporters.(continued below)

Mr. Dolphin I evaluated your credentials from your web site. It is very obvious you have never ran for office before and thus have never served in an elected position. As for your letters of endorsement, even with my limited computer skills I can produce documents exactly, and I do mean exactly, like the ones you have posted on your web site. You claim 25 years of experience as a police officer in New Jersey. You claim you advanced to the positions of Supervisor and Detective. However, in your very own words I see that after 25 years of service you were demoted from Supervisor/Detective to the rank of corporal. You then left the force, left your hometown, and moved hundreds of miles away from your family, friends, and coworkers. Something very bad happened there for you to run away from your entire life’s work. I was born at night Mr. Dolphin, but it wasn’t last night.

Now do you realize we are not the backwoods, illiterate hillbillies you and your supporters have mistaken us to be. I, my family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers are voting for & supporting Mr. Shaver for Sheriff. We are proud to have his sign in our yards, and it would not have mattered to us if the signs were the “old baby blue” ones or his new “Red, White, & Blue” ones. We are teachers, service personnel, truck drivers, doctors, railroaders, nurses, pastors, senior citizens, businessmen, businesswomen, and yes even disabled voters of Summers County.

Mr. Dolphin, you and supporters have not fooled any of us with your anonymous postings. How do you feel now that someone has the set facts straight against you here on the infamousTopix Web Site,“gossib central”?

To Mr. Shaver, THANK YOU for putting your sign in my yard, for caring about my community even though some very nasty people attempt to degrade you on this stupid site, and most of all thank you for having the courage, dedication, and commitment to make our county a safer place for everyone!

To NB Lilly and other interested readers: As I just told Curtis this afternoon, Neither Ed Dolphin nor I have posted any negative articles on this site. We both agreed to stay above that kind of tactic. Nor do we intend to post on this site any slanderous remarks. I considered Curtis' family to be my friends before this campaign began and hope I can do so when it is over. However, I do feel that Ed Dolphin is well qualified for the job and I intend to work tirelessly to acquaint him with the citizens of our county until election day. At the end of the day the man with the most votes will be the next sheriff. Roy Cooper, Marie WV

I sincerely hope that I have not posted anything negative about either candidate. I have never proclaimed that either candidate's supporters are stupid.

I will however admit to asking about Mr. Shaver's credentials. As I had stated, I try my best to be an informed voter and that goes for Sheriff or the President. So yes, I did ask. Merely because I was able, through Google, to immediately have some questions answered about one of the candidates. To be fair to each person I came here to garner knowledge of the other.

I will admit to being a registered Rep. but I am more closely aligned with the Independent party, though Indies can't typically vote in a primary so I had to choose a party. I can honestly say that I have never voted party line. I vote with my conscious and my vote goes to whom I feel can best represent me.

Somehow I feel that your post is directly pointed at me and that you feel that I am Mr. Dolphin.

Truth be told I am a 38 year old, relatively new resident to this area code, married with children who came from a big city, hence the name city girl. Rest assured that I am not Mr. Dolphin.

"building the bridge that links Route 3 to Temple Street (do you know which one that is?)"

Yes, I am aware.

I have never, ever considered you or anyone from this beautiful state backwoods, illiterate hillbillies.

I merely just try to have as many facts in front of me so that I can make an informed decision.

Should have known when this topix got started it would get nasty. Everyone has a right to support whom they wish for the office, even liking both candidates. Couldn't expect anything more of people of our area. I have already gave my support to dolphin, but this in no way being slanderous to shaver. Don't take this the wrong way, but speaking of the past, I believe this is the first election that shaver has not got slanderous himself and that is a plus to him.

Sounds to me like that was intended to clean up the mud that has been thrown around on here!! Some people just can't stand on their own two feet. They have to try to push others down to make themselves feel taller.

Shame on you Mr. Lilly for making accusations against Mr.Dolphin. You need to face the fact that any elected official is closely scrutinized. To include their past, family, employment record etc. I am truly amazed how these candidates step up to the plate knowing the many skeletons in their closets and rationalize their behavior when the truth is disclosed. Obviously if you think you know Mr. Shaver so well and approve of his character than I do not take much from your post. This county is in poor shape. I just hope all of the Obama supporters who are voting for change adopt the same mind set in the local election.
