What kind of damage would be caused ,if Bluestone Dam should break? How far down the river would it flood? What kind of emergency plan do Summers Co. have?

A dam break would result in flooding all the way to New Orleans. The further down river, the less damage.

Let's start at the dam.

Bellepoint = gone
Bypass = gone
Avis = gone
Railroad = gone
Lower Madams Creek = gone
Southside = gone
Brooks (SCHS)= gone
Sandstone = gone
Lick (Rt 20 toward Meadow Bridge)= gone
Meadow Creek = gone

That's where Summer's County stops.

Damage further down the river would cause more death and destruction than could be imagined. Economic devastation that would take decades to recover from. Actually if the dam broke and destroyed the River Valley businesses, they would never rebuild there. They would relocate. There's nothing there for them even now.

The previous post is under the assumption that the dam is full.

The river runs north, not south. It would be bad for Hinton and the other areas mentioned. I doubt Charleston would get much damage.

Right. So what is your point? It ends up in the Ohio and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico.

Your crazy the new river flows north to Canada via a secret underground passage where it used to dilute maple syrup. Then the excess is released into the Arctic ocean.

It would not be very likely that the dam would EVER just tip over, all in one piece. If that should happen. then there would be absolute destruction of anything that was at a low level and near the river. Water would even rush backwards up the Greenbrier river for several miles. By the time the onrushing water reached the Kanawha Valley it will have diminished somewhat but would still be so powerful that it would just about ruin everything it its path. Then, at Huntington, it would have spread out laterally enough so as not to be so destructive as it was while it was pinched in between the hills farther upriver.
A more probable failure of the dam would be for a section of it to fail, at which time water would start coming out through that failure but not at all like the volume of water as described above. It might not even cause flooding at all. People along the river most likely have nothing to fear about this ever happening.

If the dam broke--it would cause total destruction all the way to Charleston--that is why it was built --to control the Charleston area.

Most people haven't been all the way down river, if it did happen it would also cause the damn at Hawks Nest to fail as well. That impoundment is kept at 90% full all the time. Between the 2 it would level the locks at Marmet as well.
