Keeping in mind that we need more water related activities, what can you recommend as new (or revived) activies for next year?

I'm interested in anything...as long as it's water related.

Thanks for your time!

How 'bout a fireman's rodeo? We could make it as big or small as we like. Seeing the response the fireman's parade had, we could invite different groups of local fire departments to go through different tasks fireman do and give a reward to the best one. Things will bring family members from surrounding communities.

When I was in the Air Force, we had a raft race. Each group decorated a float that was mounted on inner tubes. Then we floated down the river for the people to see and enjoy. Prizes were given to the best floats. It was more fun just getting the floats ready and floating down the river, whether you won or not.

How about remote control boat races?

Brenda mentioned Aqua Follies? I am not sure what that is. Someone mentioned regular boat races. I wasn't here when this all happened but sounds interesting.

That's a start.

The Aqua Follies was a huge musical production done on a stage out in the Glory hole. There was also a "Dancing Waters" Show.

Do you think these could be renewed? Or a newer version put together?

Ok, I see some good ideas thusfar.

The fireman's rodeo....although it's not water related.

The inner tube float decorating contest.

The remote control boat races.

The regular boat races.

Of these, I'll willing to press for their adoption/inclusion BUT we still need volunteers who would take these ideas (with some help) and make them happen.

Still open to more new ideas!

The reason I suggested the Fireman's Rodeo is because the Fireman's Parade and its popularity. Also, there are several events in the rodeo that involve water. There is a bucket brigade relay and one where each team of firefighter use their water hoses to force an empty keg across their opponent's line. Could be a good way to cool the crowd off too.
I am willing to help.

It may be hard to get boat races back in town. If I remember correctlt, the event was cancelled due to its involvement with Budweiser.

That is correct. Highly doubtful to get the hydroplane boat races back because people had issues with Budweiser. Budweiser was the sponsor and they said they would never come back here. No boat races since. It's a shame people can't get past their hangups. We lost a great attraction and major money maker.

Like I said before, I am relatively new to this area, when did the races stop? and how many of the people who were against it are still around?

At the Charleston Regatta one year, or they may still have it, they had a race of *which tanker could project the water the fartherest (sp) across the river. Firemen are proud of their trucks and equipment. The tanker who won received a money donation for their Firestation. There were quite a few tankers lined up that year when I saw it.

They could do it on the lake or some where they could all line up at one of the rivers before or after the parade.

I found at one water festival in South Carolina that they had jet ski and water ski demonstrations. Wonder if there are any teams around here that could do that?

Actually a fireman's rodeo is in the works among the volunteer fire depts. I'm just not sure enough volunteer firefighters will be willing to put forth the time and effort to get the idea off the ground. I was placed as head of the project 2 years ago I think. I sent out 20 letters to fire depts. in surrounding counties and only received 2 responses from local depts. I'm glad to see that the public has an interest in it though. I'll get the word around to the other firefighters that the public is interested in the idea and see what they think about getting the public involved in helping with the project if anyone would be interested.

How receptive is the Water Festival Committee to change? I talked with a lady in her early thirties that said she would like to get involved but most of the people were stuck in their ways. She also mentioned that another of her friends had tried to help and didn't get to far. My friend says she would be interested in the coronation of the water festival queen. As a former queen, she says that it hasn't changed since she was queen.

I love the Fireman's Parade (even though some trucks get "lost" and go the wrong way) and the fireworks. Other than those 2 things, I honestly don't see anything going on during the Water Festival. I see signs promoting it, and I saw the schedule on the "Hinton Channel", but I wonder if there is a way to get more advertisement? It seemed like it was "life as usual" during the week...like not enough people knew what was going on. You would think that as many people as are in this town, the traffic would change or something. It just seems to be under-recognized. Maybe people are too apathetic these days. It's time to wake them up!

The group that I'm working with on the project doesn't meet again until next month. That is when I plan to further discuss it and get some feedback. I'll be sure to get back to you all then. Thanks again.
