Hi all, let me try and clear some things up, and I'll try to keep it as short as possible. I was involved with the 'house' in Hinsdale for well over a year during its worst times.
1. Father Al and Alex Tanous, the world renowned psychic were NOT friends. They first met when Alex gave a lecture at SBU in the fall of '73. Upon speaking to Alex, he agreed to visit the house after the lecture. Father and Alex arrived at the house late, around 11 pm that evening. Alex walked through the house and received impressions on 7 deaths, all which he contributed to a mass murder. The next spring, Alex returned to the house, April 13th, with a film crew of 7 members from NYU. We were all to leave the house for several hours, while Alex and Father attempted to assess what the true nature of the problems were. This time, Alex only received one impression, that of a young girl which died in Mary's room, the youngest child of the Dandy family. He explained that psychics are not infallible and they make mistakes too. Later in the evening, Father Al performed an exorcism. It was something to see and hear. Two of the crew members and myself were in the kitchen when we, as well as everyone else heard, loud wails and moans throughout the house. There was no specific place the sounds were coming from. The following day, Sunday, Alex toured the ground and received other disturbing impressions, one being a young girl being hung from a tree at the beginning of the family's road. As far as a priest working side by side with a psychic, "spiritual clarity," permission from the church was granted. Due to the overwhelming psychic activity in and outside the house, Alex was asked to help to find what energies Father Al was going to be up against.
2. The neighbor mentioned the house being built in the 1700's; not so. The house was build between 1850-70 and may have BEEN an inn. Also, the foundation of a way station, confirmed through investigating Hinsdale's history, is at the beginning of the road, across from the 'hanging tree,' and over a small rise. I would like to applaud the 'neighbors' efforts in trying to help Flo and Joe, the current owners. The house is indeed of extensive repair. I am still involved with an ongoing investigation of not just the house, but the entire area. I moved from NY in '75 and returned in '99. I've just finished writing a novel on my involvement and experience of the house and it will hopefully go to print late July of this year.
3. Off the topic of the house. Devereux hall at Saint Bonaventure University is NOT haunted. There were some kids that attempted to hold a black mass but didn't succeed. Below is a link that tells the story, written by Father Al.

http://web.sbu.edu/friedsam/archives/Biograph...
Trabold/paranormalcases.htm

4. Father Al wasn't just a priest. He taught theology at the University for 30 years, and held an enormous interest in the paranormal since a child. He was a member of psychical research institutes, here as well as Great Britain. He was undoubtedly one of the kindest men I'd ever known. Father passed away April, 2005, and is dearly missed by many.
I hope I've helped clarify any questions or doubts you may have had. You can email me with any questions.
One other thing I'd like to ask the neighbor: By any chance, was it you that drove up the road Saturday night, kinda fast, kicking up stones into two small children's faces? I don't know of too many other neighbors of Flo and Joe. I know there have been a lot of 'pain in the butts' driving up and down the road looking for the house, but I have permission to continue investigations, from not only Flo and Joe, but from Mr. and Mrs. L. who own the surrounding property.
Thanks all!

Topix has a problem. My previous posts showed my hometown of Olean, which it still is. The last two show Eden, NY. My profile says Olean, so there is something amiss here, Topix!

From where did Fr. Al receive his permission to deal with a psychic? You say "the church" granted permission but from what source, authority or office?

I have just read Fr. Alphonsus Trabold's (Fr. Al)
bio from the SBU archives that you provided the link for. Maybe as you say he was a very kind man indeed yet there is concern for his views on the parnormal as stated in the bio:
"I've been interested in magic and witchcraft and the occult, both from the point of view of the paranormal powers and of history". Also fascinated with religion from an early age, he joined the Franciscan order...He never saw a contradiction between his twin passions. Indeed, he sought to integrate them. "Any power we have has to ultimately come from God", he said in 2003. "That's to be understood. Otherwise, it just wouldn't be there. Very often, you will find that people associate any kind of paranormal ability - for instance ESP -(with) something evil. I've had certain groups of clergymen of certain denominations condemn these things. They say it's the Devil. No! No!, it isn't. It's just things we don't understand."
The concern still stands that we are emphatically directed by God himself to stay away from all forms of divination:
"Do not go to mediums or consult fortune tellers for you will be defiled by them. I, the Lord, am your God" (Lev.19;31) "Should anyone turn to mediums and fortune tellers and follow their wanton ways, I will turn against such a one and cut him off from his people" (Lev.20:6)
You see it is not that we just don't "understand" them as Fr. Al suggests it's that the Church does understand them. St. Paul tells us to be on guard: "The Spirit says clearly that some men will abandon their faith in later times. They will obey lying spirits and follow the teaching of demons"(1Tim. 4:1).
Anyone who has these abilities can be tapping into the demonic. This is a cat and mouse game in which those who pursue forbidden knowledge are the mouse pursuing the cat. Watch out!
Let us consider now some examples of forbidden knowledge and power. When we talk about forbidden knowledge, we simply mean knowledge that is obtained outside of God's influence or the normal way that human beings obtain knowledge. Clairvoyance or obtaining information from spirits is forbidden knowledge. Spiritualism involves a communication with the dead or with the spirit world by some psychic or occult means. Great care is to be used because many people are fooled. There can be the use of the Bible, holy water, statues of saints and even Catholic hymns. Spiritualists often believe in the Fatherhood of God, doing good to others, personal responsibility for what one does, reward for good deeds and punishment for evil deeds. Many are Christian or even Catholic and profess faith in Jesus. But there is always a dangerous attempt to communicate with the dead or with spirits in some way. It can be through a seance, or perhaps the person just seems to go into a trance. Sometimes spiritualists are involved in healing, witchcraft, fortune telling or even blessing homes to protect them. Sometimes they beleive in reincarnations as well. It doesn't matter if there are statues, holy water, crucifixes, prayers to Jesus, Mary and the Saints, if there is any superstitious practice it is evil. Trying to bring about some kind of harmonic convergence or "integration" as Fr. Al stated is to try to marry the power of the occult with God. It is an abomination. That which does not come from God comes from the Kingdom of False Light and Darkness.
In this time of night vison cameras, infared, and electro- magnetic activity recording devices we are truly being tempted to engage the hidden realm. Again I would recommend Fr. Amorth's two books on exorcism as an excellent affirmation of the power of evil.
In the name of Jesus Christ the Lord let this message through.

By the way the Discovery Channel showed the episode again yesterday. Either it's on a very short loop or it is very poplar. On the chanting in the woods...consider that the heavenly angels adore God by heralding Him with their song, hymns. The angels of darkness herald the devil with their own voices. Something to think about.

And regarding your side not on the "black mass" at SBU... any attempt whether with a consecrated host or not is an attempt to engage the devil. It's not child's play.

So if I am "gifted" with mediumship, does that make me evil? I never looked for it and I never asked for it. But I have it. God says to use what gifts he gives you. Wouldn't that be throwing away a gift from him? I think you read too deeply into the bible my friend. And it seems you are highly opinionated. That isn't healthy. One must be more optimistic. You come on here telling people they are wrong for posting thoughts from their minds and you preach paragraphs upon paragraphs of verses that some people may not follow or believe in. That in itself is wrong and highly negative. If you don't agree with what people say or do. Fine. Say what you want to say and leave. This thread is about a haunted house in Hinsdale and the experiences people have had. Not about one's personal and religious beliefs. If you really need to preach publically, then start your own thread. I'm sorry if I upset you by this, but you have offended myself and many others who share my "gift" by calling us evil. That's mean and hateful. I thought the Bible teaches about love and understanding. Have you skipped that part in your search to hurt people?

You as all of us are a child of God. Are we not reading from the same Bible?

Perhaps as you said you did not ask for the "gift" of mediumship, but because you are a child of god you must seek out the source and the reasoning for this ability.
It is equally unreasonable and dangerous to accept everything without testing it. Satan knows how to come to us as an angel of light, and in the past just as today has raised up a host of false seers and illuminators who lead astray a great many sincere people and discredit the Church.
Accordingly we must be neither credulous; for spirit manifestations are possible, nor credulous for frequently they are illusory. They should be examined seriously and for a long time; and if they are seen to be of doubtful or diabolical origin, they should be completely disregarded.
There are rules for discernment of spirits in ordinary and extraordinary phenomena.
Perhaps the priests at St. Michael's in
Buffalo would be able to help you.
I do not call you evil, you are a child of God but what you entertain is concerning for you and for those who have recourse to you.
Frankly what we are discussing is very relevant to the thread.

Spiritual, I respect your beliefs and what you have said. I was raised in a Catholic family, I had an aunt that was a nun, I myself was an alter boy and believed everything I learned in Catechism. I don't believe we have a spiteful and vengeful God as I think you believe him to be. I don't need to be concerned with the chanting in the hills, something I myself have not heard, whether its good or evil. Father's Alex's and my own concern was to aid those that were earthbound to find their way to everlasting peace. We aren't holding seances or conducting anything to conjure up spirits. There is more to the troubles in the area of the house that go beyond the realm of spirits, good or evil. If you truly believe in God and his son Jesus Christ, then you must believe that he has given man the genius to understand the phenomena this world has to offer. I don't for a second believe that every earthbound spirit has something to do with evil, nor do I believe that attempting to help them move on would make me lose my seat alongside our Father. You say that forbidden knowledge is that which is found outside of God's influence. If that statement is really accurate, then there are a lot of us, who go to church regularly, attempt to uphold the ten commandments, and try our best to follow the rules of the Almighty. who are going straight to hell and don't even know it. Probably 70% of what man's knowledge obtained in the past century are not influenced by God, but by mans ability to learn. And please, let's not say that knowledge is influenced by man because God created man, because that's just going to twist words around. Space travel, the introductions of vaccines, treatment for diseases, not a direct influence of God. If I am wrong in these statement then I ask for forgiveness from the Man I talk to every day. No offense, but you're views are a bit too Old Testament for me.

Spiritual clarity..What I have achieved using my gift is helping people understand their haunts. I have had numerous "clients" who I helped relieve by introducing them to those who share their residence. My gift brought peace, security and understanding to those who lived in fear and ignorance. I helped a friend who's sister that passed on and came to me to give my friend much needed personal information. That too made my friend feel relieved and content. And I use my gift to help those who pass over to reassure the living that souls do indeed live on after death. Does that sound like the work of the devil? And I have been using these gifts for the past 20 years. Yeah..longer than the "ghost hunters" and most "paranormal investigators". Don't stereo-type everything you can't understand as the work of the devil. That insight in itself is the work of the devil. Not allowing you to be open minded....and hearted. My blessings to you, my friend.

Interesting. Without having any idea where S.C. gets it's reference points from it is assume that they are personal when in truth they are not. BTW nothing was ever said about a "vengeful God".
After running a check with an innocent bystander who read through the posts their comment was "what are they talking about? SC never said that.." The point being that there is some "reading into" going on here instead of just reading.

Totally understood and with respect. The 'vengeful God' reference was stated because only a vengeful God would think react the way the words I've read were taken.

Hey Paul! I am a 27 year old female and as far back as I can remember we have all had "encounters" I have seen, heard and felt things myself and my brother who was a sickly kid (now 34) I feel weird saying he is psychic or medium so I will just say he knows things. Anyway, the first house I grew up in, in Riverside was haunted, we moved to Holland NY and that was oh man! I can email you Paul with LOADS of stuff from that house anything from hearing a little boy coughing (my mom, 28 year vet of the sheriffs dept, my other brother and myself heard it) to my dogs and cats freaking out, wood being thrown across our basement, our cleaning lady hearing people call her name, water turning on upstairs, doors slamming etc etc etc. my best friend and I would feel something sit on the end of my bed and almost like fingers on our legs (we would wrap our legs around eachother and hold hands so we knew it wasnt one messing with the other) my mother has had several encounters with her deceased sister, her father called her on the phone after being dead for years (thats a creepy story) My cousin passed away a year and a half ago at 36 and for about 3-4 months he would appear not only in my apartment but in strange dreams that I would wake up crying. my middle brother has been punched by my deceased uncle the morning he died, heard his voice say "its teddy" I have heard a man forcefully call my oldest brothers name outloud. My Mom's house now in Boston, NY is pretty damn creepy. My whole family talks about that syndrome something witches syndrome where you literally are paralyzed cant move, talk, yell or anything. I within the past 6 months had that experience are you familiar with it and WHAT the heck was it? My boyfriend was literally an inch from me and I couldn't even move a hand for his help, couldnt breath or scream. Anyway if you would like to know more or talk I think we are an interesting family with alot of us having the unexplained happen.
