How about we just tax 'me at 50%, Poor folks would have to have an average of only $2 or $3 Billion to survive on.
The richest 400 Americans have more money than the bottom 80 million Americans combined.
I know .... Let's do nothing and that way statisticians tell us that in less than 10 years the richest 400 people will have more money than the bottom 150 million Americans.
Yep, that's great for America.
And?

"How about we just tax 'me at 50%"

Tax YOU at 50%? LMAO.

Hey, Einstein, you'd be taxing their wealth, not their income. Make up your mind, if you're understanding what you're trying to do...

What are you going to do after you TAKE 50% from those EVIL rich people. How much of a dent does it put in our country's debt? What then? Tax 'em (note the proper spelling) again? Then what? Think these people will stick around?

Amazing you can argue one side of the argument (and not very well at that) yet not address questions posed that expose the weakness of your points...

Typical, yet not unexpected...

Wealth envy is an ugly thing. They have it. You don't.

Somebody else got all the breaks. You didn't.

They got an education. You didn't.

They worked their a$$es off, including long hours and weekends. You didn't.

They took risks, including investing their own money if necessary, to build a business. You didn't.

"Shared prosperity" = Socialism...

“If you’re not a liberal at 20, you have no heart, and if you’re not a conservative at 40, you have no head.” Winston Churchill

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.” Winston Churchill

“Common sense is a flower that doesn’t grow in everyone’s garden…”

The entire liberal philosophy is based on anti-individualism and burdened down with a complete lack of logic. No liberal has ever been able to explain why it is OK for someone to use the government to do for them what would be a crime if they did it for themselves- such as seize someone else’s property because you think you need it more than they do…

Let's just take a look at the scoreboard for a moment:
The last time we had a Republican President he absolutely and utterly destroyed the economy of the United States of America.
Wall Street fell apart, millions and millions of Americans were unemployed and homeless, US auto-manufacturing was on the brink of being extinct, and he couldn't catch the bad guys.
Our Republican Congress actually got our credit-rating downgraded. Then they proceeded to do nothing for America, except impede the clean-up.
Then the Republican Party, right after destroying the country, insulted Americans by putting up the most ridiculous and laughable candidates this country has ever seen. Then they did it again the next election.
Republican policies haven't changed ONE-BIT since that happened.
And you REALLY want to complain about the guy who's done a great job getting us back on track? In fact, such a great job that America chose to re-elect him again?
That about sums it up. Final Analysis: Republicans are a freakin' disaster and out of their minds. It's the only possible conclusion that you can come up with.
So save your griping for somebody who DOESN'T remember what happens when Republicans are in charge.
Seriously, how does someone GET as brainwashed as you are? It is absolutely astounding. If you call Obama a leader, you haven't even BEEN in line. Sheesh......

So Barney Frank, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, etc. get a free pass? Typical uneducated comment. You know enough to be dangerous.
"Then the Republican Party, right after destroying the country, insulted Americans by putting up the most ridiculous and laughable candidates this country has ever seen. Then they did it again the next election."
+1 Fair points. But, IF you TRULY believe running someone that had no previous experience running anything was a better choice, you're in for quite a debate. BTW, how did that work out for ya?
BTW, McCain was not a good choice, but I don't recall anyone else that would have been acceptable. Romney was not my first choice, nor my second.
"And you REALLY want to complain about the guy who's done a great job getting us back on track?"
LMAO big time. A "great job"? Seriously? Are you paying attention to what's been going on, or are you so anti-Republican that you're missing things (too many to list)? What EXACTLY has he done? Do you know the last time we had a budget? Do you know what the country's debt is and how long it will take to pay down or get to a reasonable level?
"In fact, such a great job that America chose to re-elect him again?"
The takers now outnumber the makers. Santa Claus has shown up early. The clueless outnumber those that understand what's happening. People want to be a socialist country. Around half the country doesn't pay federal income tax. The liberal goal appears to be to have 50.1% of those eligible to vote on welfare.
Obama has succeeded in getting the liberals riled up against the successful so that he can run around campaigning against the Republicans. That way, he won't have to do anything else and he can "appear" to be the Savior. The libs don't even see how gulllible they are. I DO give Obama credit for being a master manipulator. He has THAT down to a science.

As if you aren't Rove and the Koch Brothers perfect little sock-puppet. You're spouting off exactly what they WANT you to spout off. And their message is NOT good for Americans, America, people, or the planet in general. It's good for them. You've been marketed to, masterfully.

Now you're so deep into it that you've taken their propaganda on as part of your personality and identity. You couldn't change your mind if you wanted to. But it's ok, if you decide to wise up and start thinking we'll give you a warm welcome to the smart way of thinking. No need to be embarrassed.

It seems to me the republicans are campaigning against themselves. They really think the average american is dumb. I voted for Obama because the alternative was Romney. Romney had the better budget plan I think, but that last debate really showed his ignorance when it come to foriegn affairs. The man broke out sweating and almost conceded. This whole national debt is real, but it's not like there's anybody going to come collecting. It's mainly the only thing the republicans got to cause fear and confusion. Most of this debt was there when Obama got there. It doesn't matter who was put in there. It's going to take decades to get back right after Bushhog. I try not to sweat the small stuff. I do on the other hand have problem with being spyed on and/or killed. I think if a man is at his home he should be left alone. I also think that an american citizen should have a fair trial or at least be given the chance to surrender. I think if little Johnny gets caught by them over there. I'm sure his family and him would rather him be tortured a little bit than killed.

For alot I'm sure your correct. Either way this presidency will be remembered as an example for future presidents and congress what the outcome is when neither side is willing to budge. A filibuster. It's has been one crisis after another and all Obama would have to do is give up Obamacare to make this government work again. It's all a big pissing contest.

If you TOOK all of the wealth of the around 400-500 billionaires in the US, how long do you think it would run the country? What would it do to the $16.5 TRILLION debt we have? For how long? What do we do next?
You talk about "wealth envy" quite a lot. That leads me to believe that your problem really is with pride, not whether a bunch of "takers" are going to loot your wealth. You might want to try and humble yourself sometimes. Like the bible says, you can't take it with you.

But you do put up a few good arguments. And one of those is whether our country should tax wealth as opposed to earnings. There are many people out there who believe the rich should be taxed on their wealth. It's been pointed out many times that the very rich usually don't "earn" much money (unless you're a golfer!) and accrue their money often through capital gains (which typically are taxed lower than similar dollars earned by an average "worker").

I'm not so sure taxing the rich at higher rates, or just plain taking it away - as some suggest - is the answer. I myself don't "envy" the rich. But I do think our country should take a long, hard look at how our tax system is set up and level the playing field.

Personally, I think all income, whether from the sweat of the brow, or capital gains, should be taxed equally. I don't subscribe to this nonsensical idea that the rich should get tax breaks on investments because only the rich create jobs. If there weren't garbage truck drivers and carpenters and millions of other common Americans out there spending their paychecks on groceries, gas, etc. there would be no jobs. So while the "working class" might no create jobs, they certainly do create the demand for jobs to be created.

I think it's really time to rework the tax code and make it fairer for all citizens. Take away the loopholes and tax breaks. If we all pay our fair share of taxes our country will be much better off.

No, it wasn't.

You have some fair points, your first paragraph is clueless, but that's OK.

Some states already tax wealth (property taxes, ad valorem, etc.), not to mention "death taxes".

"and accrue their money often through capital gains (which typically are taxed lower than similar dollars earned by an average "worker")"

Is it accrue or earn? BTW, do you know the rationale as to why capital gains are (currently) taxed at a lower rate for ALL of us?

"I think it's really time to rework the tax code and make it fairer for all citizens. Take away the loopholes and tax breaks. If we all pay our fair share of taxes our country will be much better off."

+1

Likely the best comment you have made in here. However, can you define fair? Should everybody pay something? Should all pay the same rate (a flat tax)? On income? On spending (the FairTax)? On wealth? If on wealth, how do you do it, the process would be nightmarish, probably more so than what we go through preparing tax returns...

The default position of those who cannot support their position with actual facts because the truth is that this administration's policies have only made economic conditions worse. Blame all you want on Bush, but the truth is that if you want to look at the housing crisis and it's impact on the economy go look at the Community Investment Act, the Clinton Justice Dept breathing down the necks of banks so they would offer home loans to those who couldn't afford them, and Christopher Dodd and Barney Frank protecting Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to keep their contributions and sweetheart deals coming in. My disagreement with Obama's positions (and most Democrat positions) is based on policies that are proven to be detrimental to the country - never based on skin color. But you keep screaming racism, that's what the ignorant do best.

Some of your points are valid, some are not when looking at the bigger picture. Taxing capital gains at the same rate as income will bring more money into the public coffers, but that is going to hurt the middle class far more than it will hurt the uber rich. Granted with the current housing market, this example is not as good as usual, however, typically the biggest capital gain your average American earned was if they sold their house after living in it for a decade or more. You sell your house and with the increased value that it was sold at, you can purchase a bigger and better house. But if the difference between what you paid and what you sold your house for is taxed at the same rate as income, it is going to be much less likely to enable you to upgrade to a nicer house. Or if senior citizens want to sell their family home and downsize, the "profit" they would have made to put towards their retirement has just been slashed dramatically. This is the problem with "quick fixes" and soundbites that sound good on paper until you start looking at the real impact they have on average citizens.

But can you imagine the impact of a flat tax of 12% on everyone with no deductions except to perhaps exempt the bottom tier of wage earners. You could virtually eliminate the IRS - that same IRS that asked for over 1,200 new employees for 2012 at a cost to taxpayers of an additional $473 millions. And that same IRS that has increased audits on small businesses from 32% to 94% depending on the size of the business - and that is a whole lot of money spent by those businesses that could be spent on expansion and employees.

I would deny it vehemently. Are there racists in the Republican party - absolutely, but I am very comfortable in saying that there is no greater a percentage of racists in the Republican party than there is in the Democrat party. The Republican party welcomes all who agree with our principles regardless of skin color, but look at what the Democrat party does to any minority who DARES to step outside the party line. Clarence Thomas, Condoleesa Rice, Allen West and Tim Scott are examples who come immediately to mind. They are called house n------ and Uncle Toms or portrayed in cartoons as step-and-fetch-its or Aunt Jemima. THAT is racism at it's finest and the Left gets away with it. Obama gets away with attending a church for 20 years that has as it's pastor one of the most hatefully bigoted people it has ever been my misfortune to hear. But Trent Lott makes an ambiguous statement at a birthday party for Strom Thurmond (no hero of mine) and he loses his Senate minority leader position. Does anyone else see a double standard? Just one example of many.
