Another Pike County Thompson in Trouble.

Pike County Church Refuses Interracial Couples Membership
(Gulnare, Kentucky)- One eastern Kentucky community is divided after a Pike County church voted Sunday not to allow interracial couples to be members or participate in church services. According to members of the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church, not everyone is in agreement with yesterday's vote. Melvin Thompson, who actually submitted the proposal to the church, defended his position, and says he doesn't feel this will affect the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church at all. "I do not believe in interracial marraiges, and I do not believe this will give our church a black eye at all. It came before the church on Sunday and the vote was 9 in favor and 6 against," said Thompson. One member of the community whose family attends Gulnare Freewill Baptist, L.J. Harville, says she finds Sunday's vote hard to believe. "I just can't believe that a church, where people go for solace in times of need, can show such a display of racism," explained Harville. East Kentucky Broadcasting obtained a copy of Mr. Thompson's proposal which passed on Sunday.
The following is that proposal : "That the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church does not condone interracial marriage. Parties of such marriages will not be received as members, nor will they they be used in worship services and other church functions, with the exception being funerals. All are welcome to our public worship services. This recommendation is not intended to judge the salvation of anyone, but is intended to promote greater unity among the church body and the community we serve." Submitted to the church business committee November 9, 2011 for their consideration by Melvin Thompson, member, Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church.

Pike County church bans interracial couples from membership
The Gulnare Freewill Baptist church voted not to allow interracial couples to place membership or be used in worship services or church functions.

A woman says she cannot attend the Pike County church she grew up in because her fiance is from Africa.

The Gulnare Freewill Baptist church members voted not to allow interracial couples to place membership or be used in worship services or church functions.

Stella Harville, known as Suzie, and her fiance do not live in Pike County but attend services at the church when she is at home.
Harville wants the church to change its stance.

Harville met Ticha Chikuni at Georgetown College. They fell in love and are recently engaged. However, she says the news was not well received when she came home to Pike County and attended the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church.

On Sunday, church members voted 9-6 to not condone interracial marriage.

WYMT obtained a copy of the resolution. It states:
"That the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church does not condone interracial marriage. Parties of such marriages will not be received as members, nor will they be used in worship services and other church functions, with the exception being funerals.
All are welcome to our public worship services. This recommendation is not intended to judge the salvation of anyone, but is intended to promote greater unity among the church body and the community we serve."

Harville talked to WYMT's Angela Sparkman on the phone. She said, "It's just a travesty, especially of Christianity, that this church feels this way. They've crossed the line in revoking my fiance and mine's right to worship in a public place. It hurts even more that I have attended this church ever since I was a baby."

Ticha Chikuni is originally from Zimbabwe but he has lived in the United States for eleven years
"He just has one of the kindest hearts for God and then this is happening. People who have backwards way of thinking, they should know that their racism actions should not and will not be tolerated," said Harville.

Church member Melvin Thompson who started the initiative told WYMT he would not comment.

The church's pastor, Stacey Stepp told WYMT he is trying to resolve the issue and that everyone is welcome at the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church.

"I'm not going to wish harmful things for these members who have put my family through this, but they should know their actions will not be tolerated," said Harville.

The couple is planning their July wedding which will take place out of Pike County.

WYMT also talked to Harville's parents who are members at the church. During the church's Wednesday meeting, they will ask the church to change its decision.
If not, then they plan to leave the church and look for a new church to worship.

Another Johns Creek Thompson to appear on national news in the next few days. Randy Thompson is related to Melvin Thompson. See any similarities regarding being in control and power? Boycotting has already begun in Pike County regarding Melvin Thompson's Hardware Store. Knott County - follow suit if it suits you.

I guess this attitude runs in that family. Did you know King Randy won't allow the Knott County courthouse to be closed on the Martin Luther King holiday despite the fact every other county, state, and post office is closed. What a terrible example that sends to our young people.

Terrible, that attitude apparently does run in that family as well as a sense of superiority to others. A generalization, I've met a few good Thompsons in Pike County.

No where in the Bible is it against inter-racial marriages. The marriages it is against is believer vs. non believer, particularly Jew to non Jew and Christian to non Christian. These have nothing to do with race.

So much for judge lest ye be judged.

Right, because we all know that God, the creator of all things, who is infinitely wise and powerful, and perfect in every way, would condone something as intrinsically wrong and vile racism.

You don't have to read a single word of the bible to know that's nothing but uneducated bunk.

Quite obviously you do not understand the Bible. Or perhaps you have formed your own interpretation. It appears to me that you are Racist, and if this is true, you are not a Christian.

As for Mr. Thompson, he has proven he is a Racist, and even worse, a Hypocrite. If I am not mistaken, the Bible says that God hates a Hypocrite worst of all. And he will punish them most harshly.

To make the claim that you are Christian, to stand up and take the role of a Minister, a Christian leader, and then look upon another person or treat them disrespectfully, or differently because of Their Ancestral Heritage is ethically and morally wrong. Plain and simple. And that Does make Mr. Thompson a Hypocrite. Now this incident is lodged for trial in the highest court of all. There are a whole lot of false prophets around, that don't pass the tests put in front of them. He is obviously another one who has failed.
