hindman tax

#1 Sep 9, 2011
Hindman City Council's August 1st Meeting - "needs to increase their revenue $15,000 to $16,000 per month to pay their bills," and a discussion followed to consider a City Occupational Tax. The topic was tabled until September City Council Meeting. Please only vote on this poll if you are a resident of the city of Hindman.

The percentage for this tax was not mentioned in the Troublesome Creek Times' account of the meeting, but it would be higher than the 1% that the county is trying to impose on us. If both of these taxes pass - I don't know how it will affect Hindman - there may be a decrease in population, businesses may move to a cheaper area like Sassafras, Mousie, etc. But Hindman citizens should definitely rethink the 1% County Tax - unless they're making enough money to pay both, plus State and Federal Taxes!

Both the county and the city are caught up in this taxation frenzy. Seems like both have got so use to living the high-life of tourism that they've forgot our humble beginnings and knack for thriftiness.

No Mention of Cuts

The TCT article regarding Hindman City Hall Meeting did not mention any discussion or attempt to try to cut back on any of their spending - but went directly to discussing a city occupational tax. What's up with that?

And the next thing they will do if they succeed with the occupational tax is extend the city's limits to include other businesses.

When will this madness end? When we vote those out in office who support this craziness.

Get the house in order before suggesting a tax increase. Begin cutting back now to begin the adjustment to managing the city on less income. That's what we're doing as families. Don't ask for a raise in your income when everyone (families) are having it so tough.

Does anyone know the city ordinances regarding imposing city taxes?
Taxed to Death

We'll be taxed to death if the county and city get their wants. I'm tired of this.

Does anyone know the last time the TCT published the city's budget and financial statements?

Come to think about it - I don't think I ever remember the TCT publishing the city's Financial Statement.

Protocol for the proposed Hindman City Occupational Tax "requires two readings and a publication in the newspaper." Keep an eye out for this.
Prior to taxing

Virgie, KY

#16 Sep 11, 2011
Myself, I'd like to see the publication of the city's budget, and current financial statement before they pass an occupational tax. Secondly, if I don't see that, nor the cuts they've tried to make before imposing a tax, I'll vow not to vote for any of them that vote for that tax for re-election. Period. Once they get their foot in the door, they're in the house.
Who will be taxed

United States

#17 Sep 11, 2011
Population of Hindman (2010) 780.
With two housing projects, and few businesses in Hindman, the main taxation would seem to hit the Knott County Courthouse and County employees, Hindman Elementary, service stations, Troublesome Creek Times, Thacker and Grigsby employees, and a few others.

Praying for No Tax

I'm praying that the city won't tax us and that they can resolve this issue by cutting back on their spending until we get over this economic hump. The town is not self-sufficient in that it cannot provide everything a person needs to live comfortably as it is a 5th class city.
