I've been told by friends that there was a man, who lived on Starr Hill, that murdered people 30+ years ago, there have been sightings of a man walking on steuben rd where he was murdered holding a latern. It only happens on full moon nights.

I think it was a woman killed and dragged behind a truck. The guy has a real creepy name, I can't think of it. I do know that he near the end of his sentence. It happened in the 70's.

I too remember hearing stories. An older sister of mine went to school with the "murderer's" daughter. His name - HATCH! Yeah- he dragged some women behind his vehicles. There is also a few other people involved but stories are just that...my dad would tell us..."don't believe anything you hear and only 1/2 of what you see".
Funny thing is-just recently I took a drive to get some photos of the beautiful foliage and saw the cemetery. The ghosts are supposably lights from cars or reflection of city lights or something like that.
There was another story about the cemetery-a rocking chair...if you sat in it you would be the next to die or something bad would happen...there is no chair there now.

There is also the remains of a old one room school that burned down (with people in it) just behind the cemetery, you can still see the old foundation of it.

I've been there twice, one of the times I brought my video camera, knowing we were going ahead of time I charged the battery for 2 days, as we walked the trail everything was working fine, but I swear over my life that the second I stepped in the cemetery - the battery went to dead instantly. I tried turning it on a few times while we were there, no luck. On the way out, half way back up the trail to our cars I was toying with my camera and it turned on with full battery again.

When I got home and watched what recording I did have, the tapes audio was all messed up, every time we talked on the video it sounded like we had 2 voices overlapping each other, very strange.

I'm planning on going this coming saturday night, I'm bringing my digi cam, I'll post the recording on youtube and any info here if anything cool happens.

Anyone who has been to Starr Hill would know that the cemetery there is nowhere near any city lights and RARELY do you ever see any cars there.
It is a beautiful place that is nowhere near anything. There's a gravel road that leads to the cemetery, though it's not reccommended that you go much further than the cemetery, there's a huge dropoff that the road takes at the end.
The cemetery is pretty well taken care of, though as of Friday night, it's been discovered that the plaque that told the history of the cemetery and a church that burnt down is no longer there. At night however, the cemetery takes on an eerie feeling that could just be from being a cemetery, or something else...
The headstones there are really old, and some can't be read anymore. A few of them have really strange inscriptions on them, and all of them are from the 1800s. Back then it seemed customary to put the exact ages on the headstones, even for the infants. One that sticks in mind is an infant who was 1 month and 13 days old...
It really is fascinating, haunted or no. I say Go N' Explore it!

I grew up on Starr Hill near the park, the Hatch story is true that really did happen, but it happened on Potato Hill not Starr Hill. There are old Air force Ponds between Starr Hill and Pen MT on the dirt logging road. The "Mob" supposedly back in the 50's & 60's was dumping body parts in those ponds. The state police drained them and discovered the body parts. There was also a young woman killed in the field where you can look out and see Delta Lake and Onieda Lake from ontop of the hill right off Starr Hill rd. That happend in the early seventies. She is sopposed to haunt that field and you can hear her screaming trying to get away from her attackers. I have never seen any of that though. I have never seen a man with a lantern either. I would not be scared of the place it has the best view in the Mohawk Valley region. You can see three counties from the look out by the old Air force Garage on Starr Hill. Just go up there and enjoy the view.

I live near there and 30 years ago there was a man that was killing young women and tying them to the back of his car by a rope, dragging them along the road until they died and then dumping there bodies in a swamp. Rumor has it that a lot of freaky things have gone on up there. I have never seen anything myself but I have heard stories from a lot of honest people that say some crazy things happened to them. When you go up there you can definitely feel something is up. Creepy place

I actually did see the apparition. I went there with my aunt, uncle and cousin in the summer of 1983. We parked late at night up on Starr Hill. After a half hour of sitting in the car we all saw what appeared as a white round light coming up the road. All of us were frightened. My Uncle Bud turned on the headlights and the light was still visible only appeared to be closer. I'd say 100 feet. He turned the headlights off and the round white sphere of light was gone. I will always remember that night. I also knew about the Hatch story. I had a friend who's father was a State Trooper in Remsen back when the murder took place. Here is the story I heard concerning the origin of the weird light I saw.

Over the last 25 years I have been up there a half

After the Revolutionary War General Baron Von Steuben settled the land at Starr Hill. When he died he was buried in an unmarked grave. At some point the burial place was disturbed and the town erected a monument and state historical site. Apparently it's the General himself out there on Starr Hill. In the past 25 years ive been there a half donzen times and have not seen the strange white light again. My girlfreind thinks I'm nuts. But she still likes to sit in the car in the dark on Starr Hill in hopes of seeing the Steuben Ghost!

The real story is that a farmer saw hatch dragging a woman down potato hill rd. The man went to prison but has been released recently. There are graveyards and use to be a rocking chair on the dirt rd off of star hill rd. many hunters camp out up there in the fall so people may have seen lanterns

I went up there last night, and me and a few of my friends got followed up by a environment officer, and he said he used to come up to starr hill and want to see something. He didn't say that he did see something, but he said that the guy "Hatch" dragged the body on potato hill.
