I think this map is incredibly indispensible for anyone who has ancestors from West Milford and the surrounding areas. My Ancestor and descendants married into many of the families in the West Milford NJ area like Merrion.Sisco,Sehulster,Wingat e, Mentzenbach, Struble, Crum and others.

The actual Map is much clearer then this sample and gives the names of the land owners during the early 1800's.

The people of West Milford on this map were among the early settlers who immigrated from Europe or were generations of earlier settlers who came in the 1600's and settled first in the colonies before moving to West Milford near Macopin now Echo Lake ect. My ancestor and descendants owned the Wickham House overlooking the lake and the land that the nursing home is now built on.

If you find your ancestors related to any of the names posted on this site or map remember the spelling although different it's due to the nature of surnames of earlier times plus the lack of education that was afforded to many of the early settlers. Some could not read or write in English. Even ancestor.com will tell you the same story about surnames. Merrion for instance is spelled several different ways like Marion or Merion or Merrion. For this reason when searching surnames on sites the mispellings will direct you to sites that claim they can't be found! Wickham is spelled Wickham although some times it shows up as Wicom or Wikham according to how the descendants spelled their own last name. After you understand how names are spelled wrong you will have a better chance in finding your ancestor.

Parker was the son of Joseph Wickham and Abigail Parker, incase I got you confused. Because Parker was the first born male he inherited most of the properties that he lost to the State of New Yorkby attainer. It was tradition to give the property to the oldest male according to English tradition back in the old days. Had Parker shifted ownership to another sibling he would of avoided the attainer and the Wickham family would of still owned the lands and buildings ect. Parker fled to Connecticut to avoid being executed for he was banned from NY. after the Revoulutionary War was won by the Patriots. Thomas Wickham the patriot was buddies with General George Washington, friends and Class mates at Yale with Landon the bidder on the Parker properties. Parker had harrassed and caused Landon to be imprisoned earlier so Landon disliked Parker.
